Fiddle's Dari-King in Parksville, NY could not survive the new Rt 17 bypass. I found a FB post from July 4th, 2013 "It's true...we will not be opening for our 50th year...I truly was hoping not to post this...but with the overpass and I86..the gov't left us no option". Parksville had for many years been bisected by Route 17, creating a four-way intersection in the middle of the tiny hamlet. And at the center of that intersection sat a traffic light – the only one remaining on Route 17/I-86’s 380 miles. With the completion of the I-86 bypass in October 2011, Route 17 no longer cut through Parksville. #fiddlesdariking #parksville #fiddles #dariking #parksvilleny #vintage #sign #vintageimage #signcollective #everything_signage #catskills #urbanarchaeology #timelessamericana #timestandstill #vitalsigns #olympus #photography #ipulledoverforthis @morgannleigh__ #unlimitedcheesesauce

#unidiversidad #bioarqueologia #urbanarchaeology #historicalarchaeology #areafundacional #mendoza #arqueologia

All credit to my daughter, who found this tiny circular ‘worked’ fragment of delftware, (17th - 18th century). Tin-glaze pottery like this is relatively soft and easily chipped into shape. Broken crockery was often reworked by resourceful children (and adults) to be used as gaming pieces. 🎲 #mudlarking #mudlarkingfinds #riverthames #londonlife #londonmudlark #urbanarchaeology #lostandfound #dirtfishing #beachcombing #delftware #tinglaze #pottery #ceramics #sherds #shards #riverpottery #blueandwhite #gaming #childsplay

🎯 #worldplayday #giornatamondialedelgioco #museichiusimuseiaperti #laculturanonsiferma #shareculture #medieval #medievalcity #medioevoitalia #archaeology #urbanarchaeology #visitalghero

One of my favorite signs from old West Sacramento. This one was HUGE, gorgeous and altogether monumental! I have heard that when the order came from the city to remove all of West Sacramento’s cheery vintage signage, that the owner of this restaurant was extremely angry and upset. I never met him, but I really love him for that! I hope he gave the city hell. 😈 I haven’t visited West Sacramento in years so I don’t know if this restaurant is still open, but I will say that it had excellent Chinese food. The only Chinese restaurant in Sacramento that I liked even better was one called the Eastern Empire – it looked like nothing from the outside, just a bland mall restaurant, but when you got inside you realized that the mall had been given a newer facade, and that the Eastern Empire was actually quite old. They had great food, and served fantastic and super strong tropical cocktails in genuine tiki mugs! The first time I had dinner there, I accidentally got super drunk because I had no idea how much alcohol I’d really been given. That umbrella drink tasted so good that I just kept sucking away on that straw...and ordered a second...only to find I could barely get up LOL. Yes, I am a lightweight. Anyway. It pays to explore! Sodini’s, a North Beach treasure in San Francisco. I haven’t been there in a couple of years, and I hope/pray/believe it is still there and still open, one of the last surviving older North Beach restaurants. It has a wonderful bar, tons of character and atmosphere, and they always play Sinatra. YOLO!! I know it’s rather immature of me, but every time I see that county name up the road from here I always laugh to myself. Here is another memory from old West Sacramento: the Yolo Club, once famous for its BBQ and cocktails. This sign looks 1960s, hm? Very jaunty! The Yolo Club is long gone. My photo dates from 2000/2001. By 2007, Google’s earliest Street View shows a Mexican restaurant in its place and no sign. I wish Street View had begun five or ten years earlier—what treasures they just missed! As it is, West Sacramento was once a gold mine of vintage signage, but the IDIOTS who run things up there decided the signs were inhibiting gentrification and forced business owners to remove them in the early 2000s. 😡🤬 The address was 2216 West Capitol Ave. (I have one of their old matchbooks.) West Capitol, btw, was of course part of an early interstate—legendary Highway 40, the Lincoln Highway. #motelrow #signsofwestsacramento #yoloclub #vintagesigns #signspotters #retrologist #urbanarchaeology #signsofinstagram #neon #signjunkies #vintageneonsigns #vintageneon #sign #signage #signgeeks #theolddays #dusk #westsacramento

#coffeebreak #WorkingBuildingWednesday I love this photo...it really highlights the inherent conflict at the heart of modern archaeology....we record, we preserve, but we also manage balanced demolition and ultimately when we excavate we destroy.... Early 20th century factory complex historic building recording and monitoring of part demolition and redevelopment. It is important, especially when economic pressures increase however that we retain a strong heritage sector, development must be allowed and even encouraged if we are to build a new world out of this crisis, but we must not just trample over what came before....particularly the working buildings which inform on the everyday working lives of people and communities. Every.Story.Counts as we say at @archsengage A lot of older industrial buildings make really good conversions for offices and studios, community centres etc, rather than always concentrating on out of town new builds, destroying more green belt land......let's look to the existing building stock in our towns and cities and focus on re-energising our existing communities... #historicbuildingrecording #historicfactory #industrialheritage #industrialarchaeology #buildingsarchaeologist #buildingsarchaeology #urbanarchitecture #urbanarchaeology #historictown #factory #urbanphotography #historicmills #britisharchaeology #ukarchaeology #history #heritage #workingculture #digger #commercialarchaeology #emilythearchaeologist #construction #demolition #redevelopmentproject

I get easily spooked night-larking, so don’t often venture out to the river in the dark - plus my head torch is forever running flat! However, I was recently given a very handy, bright little flash light by @olightworld and was keen to try it out. 🔦 Accompanied - at a suitable distance - by my chivalrous mudlarking chum @edjbucknall, (local to the same patch), the ‘highlights’ of our session were a couple of small cannon balls, some Georgian cufflinks, and a satisfyingly large crock of metropolitanware. All in all, it was an 18th century feast and we were very happy with that! 🔦 Olight have kindly given me a discount code, so do send me a DM if you’d like it! More from my Thames dandy. Here we get to see an 18th century paste gem in its original setting - as a pewter collar stud. It would have been used to secure a wonderfully frou-frou ‘stock’ at the neck (that’s a cravat, to you and me). You have to imagine the pewter as shiny as polished silver, and the glass as brilliant as a faux diamond ever could be. 💎 The wind was raging when I picked this up, so the sound is off. 💎 #mudlarking #riverthames #riverfinds #georgianfashion #18thcenturystyle #18thcentury #historicalcostume #lostandfound #urbanarchaeology #dirtfishing #londonlife #londonmudlark #historiclondon #mudlarkingfinds #pewter #cutglass #glassgem

Encountered an abandoned house on a walk the other day~ It had obviously been rifled through, things were strewn about everywhere, but it seemed as though whomever lived there just dissapeared. There were signs of life lived everywhere - clothes, toys strewn about, photographs, a half finished deck; if it were tidied up it would have been any other home. You could feel the care of the people who had lived there. As an archaeologist I was completely fascinated. Who had live there? What kind of life had they lead? As a human it made me sad. What had happend to the little boy in the photographs? Why did the house now sit boarded up with a life inside? . . . . . #abandoned #abandonedphotography #abandonedplaces #abandonedhouse #abandonedplace #homesweethome #alifelived #archaeology #urbanarchaeology #somanymemories #somanyquestions #urbanphotography #tellmeatale #sadness #someoneshome #ineedtoknow #exploration #explore #urbanexploration #exploration #abandonedexploration #mysterious #facinating

In this next short video filmed at our exhibition last year you can see the Genius Loci of the Thames (aka @ashleigh_fisk ) engaging with the punters :) + I speak to Ashleigh about the beautiful ceramics she had on display and why mudlarking, time travel and ancient aesthetics are such a strong theme throughout the work. 🌊🌊🌊 “As the legend goes, the Genius Loci, or spirit, of the Thames was born into the newly formed Thames source. As it eventually flowed into the sea, the spirit witnessed the moon and her power over the waters, and they instantly fell in love, the spirit serenading the moon with its undying love” ~ @ashleigh_fisk 🌊🌊🌊 Foragers of the Foreshore, 25th-29th Sept 2019 @Bargehouse Oxo Tower Wharf, SE1 @ThamesFestivalTrust Curator: @flo_finds 🌊🌊🌊 #foragersoftheforeshoreexhibition #totallythames #mudlark #mudlarking #thamesmudlark #thamesforeshore #riverthames #thamesriverbank #beachcombing #thamesfinds #finds #treasure #treasurehunting #londonmudlark #londonhistory #londonarchaeology #archaeology #artefact #urbanarchaeology #foundartefacts #lostandfound #mudlarktt2019 @heritagefunduk 🌊🌊🌊

Another 18th century cut glass gem for my collection - from a Georgian gent’s cufflink or collar stud. It never ceases to amaze me how many of these are still to be found in the Thames - a reminder of how much more ‘blingy’ men were back then. ‘Paste’ settings like this were plentiful, and fashion for men was undoubtedly fun. This week I was thrilled to pick up a post-medieval bone finger ring that fits my daughter, especially as I already have an adult-sized example. Now we’ve got a ‘hers and hers’ situation going on... * We then bumped into the finds liaison officer for Museum of London (at a suitable distance on the foreshore), who confirmed these rings were indeed for wearing, rather than for haberdashery. As he put it, there’s a lot of effort that’s gone into the turning of them. They may be humble, but they must have had sentimental significance for the original wearers. #mudlarking #riverthames #riverfinds #urbanarchaeology #dirtfishing #beachcombing #lostandfound #turnedbone #boneartefact #postmedieval #historicalcostume #ancientring

Pretty hard to find anything in this morning’s mud, but a 700+ year-old baby boar’s tusk is a happy addition to our burgeoning collection of porcine relics! 🐗 As I’ve said before, the boar became extinct in the UK in Medieval times - so these really do represent an ancient slice of London, and could even be Roman in period. 🐗 Unfortunately, ancient boar tusks deteriorate extremely fast once out of the protective anaerobic Thames mud, so I’ll be filling the core of this one with resin glue - a technique I adopted after a couple of my tusks bit the dust - quite literally. #medieval #roman #boarstusk #boars #historiclondon #mudlarking #riverthames #urbanarchaeology #dirtfishing #beachcombing #riverfinds

. #bottle #botella #vidrio #glass #amber #ambar #orangecrush #softdrink #arqueologiaurbana #arqueologiahistorica #archaeology #urbanarchaeology #antiquebottles

My love of finding old glass began at a very young age. 👶🏻 Growing up, I remember the days of discovering seaglass for the first time spending summers at the Jersey Shore. 🌊 I was fascinated by all the different colors and textures. 🏖 . Then, living in suburban New Jersey throughout my childhood, my neighborhood friends and I would explore wooded 🌳 bike trails and that’s where I stumbled upon antique bottles for the first time. Overgrown, littered old areas full of history from colonial times through the Great Depression... Cue the shovel and a garden rake. 👷🏼‍♂️🛠 . 20+ years later and it never gets old. The thrill of finding something new and exciting, the excitement of researching local history of past businesses and products that seem primitive to today’s standards and the beauty of pure craftsmanship in a former thriving industry of glassblowing and bottle manufacturing done by individuals, not machines. 🤩 . Here’s a group of pics from antique bottle hunt adventures on down time during the current pandemic. 🌟 As I prefer not to keep them all, I have prepared a few groupings of recent finds made available to share with you! Historic glass makes for great decor, pairs well with seaglass collecting and carries fascinating stories of America past as great conversation pieces. The water was so still yesterday, without all the regular boats carving up and down the Thames. Turns out the natural tide is really rather gentle, and the beach has become slick with silt and algae during lockdown - as reported by others. I’d assumed this was an exaggeration, fisherman style, but it was not. * When in doubt, my mudlarking rule of thumb is to pick something up - anything - in the hope that something interesting will follow! Guided by a trail of pipe stems - poking up like tiny tree stumps in the slime, others beached like miniature logs - we finally came to a ‘rocky’ outcrop and picked up half a late 17th / early 18th century wig curler. From there we found the sand that led us to the day’s delight, our Tudor chatelaine. #mudlarking #riverthames #riverfinds #londonlife #londonmudlark #lostandfound #dirtfishing #urbanarchaeology #beachcombing #wigs #historicalcostume #17thcentury #18thcentury #historicalhair

. . #vidrio #glass #medicina #medicine #vitamina #arqueologiahistorica #arqueologiaurbana #envases #archaeology #urbanarchaeology #vintageglass #laboratorio

Find of the day for us - a 16th century chatelaine! It would have hooked onto a Tudor woman’s dress at the waist - on a sash, apron, or even on a chain-belt. She would have hung from it her household keys, perhaps a scented pomander, and things she needed to hand, like a needle case or thimble. * Today was our first foray to the foreshore since the beginning of March, so it was particularly exciting to be back by the river! * This makes me think of my uncle, who was the king of completely inappropriate yet inspired gifts. He randomly gave me a Victorian chatelaine when I was about five years old. Not because he had outmoded views on womanhood, (he was gay himself), but most likely because it was beautiful and he wanted to share his passion for the exquisite and the old. I’m not sure how grateful I was at the time - I was probably more excited by the hairbands he’d also procured for me. Of course, they are now long gone, but I treasure his chatelaine. And now here’s another! He’d definitely approve. #mudlarking #riverthames #londonlife #londonmudlark #mudlarkingfinds #urbanarchaeology #dirtfishing #lostandfound #beachcombing #riverfinds #tudor #tudorhistory #historicalcostume

This pipe has a very elegant little heel, of a type I haven’t come across before. It droops down in a little arabesque, slightly shorter than the eye expects, giving the pipe a restless, unbalanced quality. And yet, balance it does. I love the grain you see in the bowl, the pocks and dimples and imperfections. Yet what I love most particularly is hidden inside, where the char of the smoker’s last smoke is preserved. A black rime that speaks of a final, deeply satisfying breath, before the pipe was thrown away. I was used once, it says, I was alive.
