Sour and pungent tastes are the two Pitta tastes. To reduce Kapha and Vata dosha aggravations, combos of sour and pungent herbs and food types are recommended. What it does is, it offsets or reduces the excess Vata and Kapha energetics. D for #dosha What is DOSHA? Often it is referred to as a person’s individual constitution, body type. It is correct but a dosha is much more than that. From Sanskrit DOSHA translates as something that is constantly changing, and is more of a type of energy that manages us than just a body type. There are three main doshas named 🌀❄️Vata, that is governed by the air and space as elements, having their qualities - cold, unstable, light, dry 🔥💦 Pitta is governed by the fire and water and is therefore hot, active, flexible 🌏💦 Kapha is under the influence of earth and water and possesses such qualities as heavy, moist, cold, uneasy to move and change. In the body, it is the unique ratio of these three humors that determines an individual’s constitution. . Autumn and Vata . If you’re a Vata type — catabolic constitution — i.e. prone to constipation, sleeplessness, dryness, feeling cold, anxiety, fear, then please be extra careful in autumn. This is your season: lots if wind, changeable temperatures, dryness (leaves falling). And as is above, so is below, your symptoms are likely to get worse. . How to look after yourself? . By regularity — of meals, bedtime, getting up etc — and by adding warmth. You can do this literally by avoiding salads and cold drinks as well as by adding warming spices to your diet: Ginger Cardamom Cloves Black pepper Mustard seed Cumin Salt . Therefore, there cannot be just one standard diet or lifestyle or yoga routine which can work for everyone. This unique blueprint is the specific proportion of 'Doshas' in all of us. First day of fall 🍃 // Were you ready for it? I am definitely not. I have been traveling so much that my body is still trying to figure out which time zone it's on 😬. Thanks to Ayurveda, I have some tips to help me stay balanced when the weather begins to change where I am living. 🔅 In Ayurvedic terms, we are beginning to enter Vata season - i.e. when the weather starts to become cold, dry, windy, and rough (qualities that mirror the Vata dosha). Ahh fall 🍂🍁 where everything slows down and it’s time for reflection after all the movement of spring and summer. . Just as the plants drop leaves to nourish their roots, we must do the same. . If you’re familiar with Ayurveda, fall represents Vata, or the air dosha. This manifests as cold and dry weather. . Because of this, our skin and hair often get very dry so we might need extra moisturizers during this time. But, moisture also comes from within so adding oily foods to the diet can be helpful as well. . Another important element to add is warming herbs and spices such as cardamom, rosemary, ginger, cumin, dandelion, and burdock roots. Again, this will balance the cold aspect of fall whereas oils will balance the dryness 👌🏼 . If you’re interested in Ayurveda, I highly recommend The Idiots Guide to Ayurveda by @iamsahararose as well as her new Ayurvedic cookbook Eat Feel Fresh which will help to put all your doshas in balance 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼 . As women, we are very tuned into the cycles of Earth bc our menstrual cycle is synched with the moon. We inherently feel the changes of seasons and are overall much more cyclic than men. . Instead of seeing it as something negative, I think it’s beautiful. We are so connected with Mother Earth as women and it’s something to be respected not shrugged off and neglected. . Autumn equinox. | I’m sitting here reflecting on a season that was so very good to me this year. I’m not where I hoped to be, no. But I’m closer. And as we transition into a new season, with it comes an opportunity for renewal. Another chance to get quiet and go inward. So I’m asking myself this autumn - what makes me happy? How do I want to lead my days? When is the right time to take my next step? Where am I going? Who am I becoming in this moment? I called my brother @joshdavid today and we talked for nearly four hours about these things. He’s my kindred spirit, someone who knows me better than myself, even though we’re separated by thousands of miles and sometimes go weeks without hearing each other’s voices. Siblings are cool like that. We talked about our creativity and how passionate our souls are for it. How creativity gives us life and purpose. How it fuels our vision for the future of this world. We are perpetually over-thinkers, creators, our minds constantly churning out ideas about how to express our thoughts and feelings and theories and hopes through art. But my brother tends to take his ideas and run with them; whereas, I can become paralyzed by my need for perfection and never feel ready. So tonight, I’m embracing that I’ll never be ready. I may not ever know what “label” I want to be. And I may never choose just one in my lifetime. But as my brother pointed out today, that doesn’t matter. It doesn’t matter if you take a particular direction. It doesn’t matter if you change your mind. What matters is that you embody what you love.

My idea of yoga and what it means has gone deeper into the realms of how to apply this to aid directly in the healing process of specific needs of individual people. -------------------------- What struck me most was the profound effect of pranayama (breathwork) and how each practice has particular effects on the mind and body, meaning that you can use the breath (in its simplest form) to help significantly reduce or clear symptoms of illness or dis-ease. When combined with particular yoga poses and Ayurvedic lifestyle changes such as diet, pranayama has the power to transform the body from sickness to health. How amazing is that? ----------------------------- Once you know your dosha and what your concern is, your subdoshic imbalance can then be worked out and from there a prescription for the pranayama, yoga and Ayurvedic lifestyle applications can be created. ----------------------------- For example if you suffer from feeling cold, regular Bhastrika pranayama as well as yoga sequences such as surya namaskara to boost the circulation can help warm the body. Very good for Vata and Kapha dosha. To cool the body down, Sheetali and/or Sheetkari pranayama - particularly for Pitta dosha. Or Bhramari for Vata to help draw the focus inwards and help induce a good sleep. To gain the benefits of these practices they need to be done properly with mindfulness. They are active pranayama practices that are best done in the morning to energise and invigorate the mind and body. Day 6: #honoryogaback2mat #igyogachallenge How are you #mindful ? I’m not going to even pretend that I am always present. But I do always try (try- being the operative word) to be mindful with my thoughts and actions. Think about what I do or say before I do or say something. For example, when I am driving, if someone cuts me off, I wish them love (92% of the time, the other 8%... well... expletives fly out of my face). I am a grande escape artist when it comes to being present. #halfinhalfout #kindoflikeacat #constantine Maybe it’s part of my #vata nature. I’m capable of daydreaming the grandest of dreams. I am completely present when I teach (I zoned out once and was like “whuhhhhh?????”😳). But when I practice asana, I’m usually flowing in and out of my body. More-so in than out as the years go by. (Hey! I’m a work in progress 🤷‍♀️). When I am out in public, I usually have my headphones 🎧 on as to drown out the sounds of the world. Except for when I hike. I like to experience and soak in the sounds of nature. It’s cathartic. I’ve definitely been able to let much of my past’s worries go, because they aren’t doing me any sort of good. But being #inthemoment , well, it’s not always easy. This world is just simply too loud for me at times. My #consciousness feels too bright and sensitive. I sense other’s emotions and they aren’t always comfortable. I’m still learning how to allow myself to feel these things and let them be and pass without judgement, which makes it all that much more comfortable 😉. So that’s that. I understand that I don’t always understand. According to the sister science of yoga, my dosha (energy) is Vata. Like the wind. Constantly moving swiftly with the constant need to cultivate grounding in my life.
