“Reconciliation to me means recognizing our true history and showing our support to build a new relationship, and teaching other generations about reconciliation. I am walking today with my wife and children so we can approach this as a family, so my children can learn from the examples all around them, and ask whatever questions they need to. Today is a great start!”⠀ ⠀ Sean, Walk for Reconciliation Participant⠀

The Reconciliation Expo featured so many fantastic exhibits and activities, including site unseen: Mural of Merging Voices.⠀ ⠀ "Students in Jackie Wong’s WVSS Art West45 program have been working together with students in the Gitga’at nation to create a mural and educational opportunity, thanks to a grant received from the West Vancouver Community Foundation and Canada 150. Five WVSS students worked together with their teacher and the museum creator May 15 to bring the project to even more students by planning a day of activities to learn about First Nations culture and land. The students then contributed to the exhibit by creating their own artwork."⠀ ⠀ Learn more here: ⠀ http://westvancouverschools.ca/aboriginal-education/news-site-unseen-mural-of-merging-voices/

The Reconciliation Art Project is designed to help children, in an artistic and engaging way, explore our shared history and begin to imagine a future of togetherness between Indigenous People and all Canadians. The project hopes to encourage children to consider what reconciliation means to them personally, through their own introspection, and to reflect their hopes for a future that includes everyone, regardless of race, culture or religion.⠀ ⠀ Learn more about the Reconciliation Art Project and how to get involved here: http://reconciliationcanada.ca/walk-for-reconciliation-2017/reconciliation-art-project/

Reconciliation: the action of making one view or belief compatible with another. Photo: the head of the Walk for Reconciliation crowd, Vancouver BC Sept. 24,2017⠀ ⠀ I am grateful to my friend Janna who made the time to help me attend this event. As I am still recovering from RCVS, attending large functions like this are a challenge in many ways for me. ⠀ ⠀ As an indigenous person in Canada, I have spent my entire life making my views compatible with the dominant culture in order to be accepted and included (these are basic human needs). To this extent, I would have to say my life has been a series of boxes and stereotypes, along with feelings of being "outside" of everything and not really "fitting" in. ⠀ ⠀ So reconciliation for me and others I know is a whole different thing than for that of people within the dominant culture. There is so much work to be done in disassembling structures that work against the indigenous population.⠀ ⠀ Political speeches and promises are nice to hear words, and they only have power when action follows them. Want to see real reconciliation-then write your MP's and ask them to address issues of no drinking water on reserves, lack of consideration in apprehending and placing native children in care, poor police response on cases involving aboriginal victims, removing discrimination against women in the Indian act, and better protection from appropriation of native culture. ⠀ ⠀ Help make real change. 🙌🏽⠀

all images by Nick Procaylo via The Vancouver Sun: ‘Thousands Walk For Reconciliation in Vancouver’: — “Tens of thousands of people take to the streets as The City of Vancouver, Reconciliation Canada, the Government of Canada and Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation host the second annual Walk for Reconciliation in Vancouver, BC., September 24, 2017. - George, one of the last living members of his cohort in St. Paul’s Residential School in North Vancouver, walked through downtown Vancouver Sunday with help from a cane and the support of tens of thousands of people. - It was the city’s second Walk for Reconciliation, a march intended to foster better relationships between Indigenous peoples and other Canadians. - George wore a T-shirt that read “They tried to bury us, but they did not know we were the seeds.” He explained its meaning. - “They tried to change us, get rid of our customs and languages and change us into the non-natives — the white people. It was beaten into us in whatever way they could. But we all (still) had it deep down,” he said. “We had to reawaken it. Some of us, like myself, were ashamed of who we were. But then we brought it out and held it up.” - When asked what it meant to see so many people come out to the march, George turned his face and went silent. Asked after a long pause if he felt touched, he nodded, unable to speak.” - #walkforreconciliation #walkforrec #canada #vancouver #indigenous #firstnations #racism #colonialism #residentialschools
