Mental health is critical to our overall wellness.ย  This is especially true during this COVID 19 pandemic.ย  Weโ€™re all concerned for our health and the health of our loved ones.ย  While we cannot avoid the stress that these concerns bring, we know how important it is to keep our stress and mood in check to help us get through these tough times. When we are struggling with depression, anxiety or other psychological concerns, our health can suffer. Often when we are stressed we donโ€™t always make good choices for our health.ย  If we feel overwhelmed this can raise our cortisol levels, which in turn can harm ourย immune system.ย  How we mentally feel influences how we physically feel. Therefore, getting help to support our mental health plays an important role in keeping us healthy, body and mind. A healthy diet is the foundation for a healthy mind.ย  It can be hard to take care of yourselves when feeling low, and often our food choices suffer. Eat a diet rich inย fiber, vitamins and minerals, and healthy proteins to help balance blood sugar, decrease anxiety, and improve energy. Certain foods can also be eaten for their specific nutrients.ย  Include the following foods in your everyday meals for their mental health supporting properties: Pumpkin seeds, which contain zinc and tryptophan to support serotonin, a feel good hormone. Fish like salmon and mackerel, or flax and chia seed are full of omega 3 fats, and are shown to improve mild-to-moderate depression. There are many different natural products that can be used to support mental health: Fish oil contains omega 3 fats, which support healthy brain signalling and mood. Itโ€™s days like theseโ€ฆ you either love or hate them. ~ These are strange, unprecedented times, thatโ€™s for sure. We're all affected and having a reaction of sorts... with the speed of these developments and vast scale of their implications, it would be impossible not to feel anything. ~ My thoughts and feelings continue to oscillate day-to-day... what started as disbelief, anger, grief, resignation and despondency has thankfully progressed to acceptance, and for the most part, almost a sense of relief. Bringing with it a sense of peace, calm and contentment. Luxury of time. Clearer headspace. Time for self-care and grounding. Tending to all pillars of health. ~ And so, after three years in the making (or is it four?) โ€“ starting in regional NSW and ending in SA, I finally completed this โ€“ my chunky green throw rug. And I couldnโ€™t be happier! ~ Wrapping myself in its warmth on this cool Autumn day is like receiving a big comforting hug, marking the end of what has been, at times, quite a harrowing journey. This is testament to my patience, persistence and resilience. ~ It represents a need to escape, refocus my attention, be still, create something beautifulโ€ฆ especially at times when the world felt ugly, unfair and unforgiving. ~ It required a healthy curiosity and willingness to learn new skills, also to persevere, no matter how many mistakes I made along the way. ~ This project gave me exactly what I needed, when I needed it the most.๐Ÿ’š ~ Now, donโ€™t get me wrong, this finished product is not perfect. Yes, Iโ€™ve dropped stitches (in some parts unwittingly gained stitches!), made clumsy joins and the tassels are unevenโ€ฆ but you know what, it represents all the lumps and bumps of life. Itโ€™s how you react to, respond to, and recover from what happens to you." - Jeffrey Gitomer ~ During your lifeโ€™s great challenges - or perhaps opportunities, depending on how you view things - what is your โ€œthingโ€ that helps to keep you resilient and well?

Last month, or what now feels like a different decade, I was fortunate enough to travel to Paris with my family. ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ € ๐Ÿ’ซ Iโ€™ve been recalling wonderful moments & memories from past travels, and I encourage you to do the same. Because they will be back! One day, we will be back to a new normal, we will be able to board flights again and land in new destinations. My word for 2020 was/is JOY! I knew when God gave me this word it wasnโ€™t going to mean a year full of blessings, great things, sunshine, lollipops and rainbows! Joy is far deeper and more defiant than happiness! Joy is rooted and grounded. No, I knew this was going to be an uphill year teaching me how to have strength in Joy! I knew that all the verses and songs God gave me in January about Joy I would desperately need. Our sweet family friend made this for me and everyday itโ€™s a reminder to start my day with Joy! In this time of chaos and new normals here is what Iโ€™m doing everyday... ๐ŸŽผ I listen to something inspirational a prayer, sermon, worship songs for at least 20 minutes. ๐Ÿ“– I journal especially things Iโ€™m grateful for. ๐Ÿ™Œ Then I pray for God to show me how I can inspire or bring Joy to Him first but then those around me. Then I ACT! Joy should be shared, spread, and poured out for all around! Even now we can bless those around us! Health is a journey. Part of my journey has been drinking more water. โ € โ € I used to NEVER drink water. I lived on low fat milk and juice. I thought they were pretty healthy. But juice has a lot of natural sugar in it. โ € โ € So, I started drinking powdered flavored water products. There are a lot of artificial ingredients in some brands, but it was a step in the right direction. โ € โ € Next, it was herbal (i.e. non-caffeinated) teas. โ € โ € I still drink herbal tea. Happy Monday! It may not feel like it but Spring really is upon us. So, I spent a good part of my weekend giving the house a deep โ€œSpring Cleaningโ€ and it was so cathartic to get into in every nook and cranny. I mean, I even cleaned the windows. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Itโ€™s incredible how after removing the winter haze the light started flooding in and the effect itโ€™s been having on my overall mood. Hey hi how are you? Hanging in there? Doing your best to see the light through the clouds instead of taking a deep dive into anxiety? Me too. Hereโ€™s some things that are helping me keep me my mental health in check when I feel it spiraling downward: The 5-4-3-2-1 grounding exercise: Get out of your head and focus on your environment by taking note of 5 things you can see, 4 things you can touch, 3 things you can hear, 2 things you can smell, and 1 thing you can taste. Notice how you feel a little lighter and calmer after getting more in touch with your physical environment. Prioritizing sleep, and trying to keep up with my normal bedtime and wake time. Gratitude journaling, meditation, deep belly breathing Wim Hof style. Taking a cold shower. This snaps me out of a negative headspace faster than you can say coronavirus. Avoid the refined sugar. Save a piece of dark chocolate this past Sunday, Iโ€™ve been 27 days added sugar free and itโ€™s a game changer. Go for a walk, or three or four. Consistent and often is helpful so I donโ€™t feel confined to our house. Outside of regular walks, staying on top of my workout routine. Getting it in first thing in the morning is a big mood boost and it feels good to check something off the list right away. Manage your news and social media consumption. Stay informed but not over-informed. Stay connected and laugh with your people. Calls and FaceTime with friends and family makes my heart so full and squishes all feelings of loneliness and anxiety. Happy Monday! We are moving into a new week & the reality is for the immediate future itโ€™s looking like weโ€™re all working from home. Over the last 12 years working from home has been part of my routine (although not under these circumstances) so I wanted to share a few tips that might help to make it more comfortable, less stressful & less isolating. Now that you have no commute you can use that hour or so to be productive. Maybe you spend it doing something for yourself like getting in a workout or reading a book, enjoying your coffee at your leisure, or get an early start on your work day. 2. Shower and get dressed. Donโ€™t spend the day in your pajamas. Take a shower get dressed & maybe even put on your makeup as if you were leaving the house. This way you feel prepared for anything, a skype call, delivery or whatever the day may bring. It can also help to keep you from falling into a depressed state. 3. Donโ€™t turn on the TV. The less distractions the better, so donโ€™t turn on the TV. You may say well, โ€œitโ€™s just running in the backgroundโ€ but all it takes is one thing to catch your eye and you could be focused on that for 15 minutes or so throwing a wrench into the timeline of your day. 3. Set Business Hours. When youโ€™re working from home itโ€™s easy to work ALL the time. Set boundaries around your work hours. If you are going to work from 8-7 then be sure to stop working at 7. When your office is in your home itโ€™s easy to continue to work well into the evening, but itโ€™s important to step away at a certain point. 4. Map out your day and make a plan. Sometimes working in 1 or 2hr blocks of time can be helpful. Prioritize your daily tasks setting aside the amount of time you think you may need to get through them all. An example could be, from 8am-9am return emails from the night before and or schedule follow up meetings. I was just listening to a podcast episode called, โ€œDivesting from Perfectionism,โ€ and it made me realize that the opposite of perfectionism is grace. Think about it: When we strive for perfection, we put our focus on the goal and forget about the process. This can cause us to become really hard on ourselves (and others, depending on the situation) and lose our compassion. Without compassion and grace, we will consistently feel like we arenโ€™t good enough because, letโ€™s be honest, perfection isnโ€™t realistic. So letโ€™s stop putting the emphasis on the end result and help each other on our unique paths. Sending everyone a hug during this socially distant time. ๐Ÿฅฐ

Transformation ๐Ÿฆ‹ As hard as it may seem to believe or hold onto faith that the transformation happening right now with COVID19 can even possibly be a good one, especially if a loved has been affected. . . But during this time is when we are called upon, not as human beings but as spiritual beings to stay faithful & see beyond, seek deeper truths, see beauty through darkness & move our thoughts, words, actions into that of beauty & love. I KNOW it's hard to do. . . But can we see how the forced quarantine has forced us to slow down. In these moments of darkness we can see the incredible acts of kindness & love. Remember, what we see is what we choose to put the most focus on. So seek out the positive stories, & show of compassion, kindness & love among citizens. Wellness can be simpe: fresh air ๐ŸŒฌ, a walk ๐Ÿšถโ€โ™€๏ธ, spending time with loved ones, getting some sun ๐ŸŒž & that Vitamin D! . . What I have learnt about Wellness is it isn't always about working out like a fitness competitor, or being extreme with fitness - but of course if that is your thing, great! I have a client who is a fitness/gym fanatic & that's awesome & I admire it. But for the majority, especially moms like myself, who may too be single moms, raising kids themselves getting, to the gym isn't always the easiest task. As a mom, and for women especially we just need to be more kind & compassionate with ourselves with our "expectations" of what fitness, health or wellness "should" look like. . . It is more important to do what brings you joy. Do what makes you FEEEEL WELL. I've realized that with each 1/2 decade my outlook on what health and wellness truly is (for me) has evolved. And I see that health is too a journey, just as life is a journey. Look at your health & wellness as a journey. Be kind & compassionate to yourself as you make changes no matter how small you may feel they are. . . What is my view now on what "diet" is best? There is no diet that is best! Nutrition really is BIO-INDIVIDUAL. What does that mean you may ask?
