➰ Backbending does nottttt come naturally to me. I used to play around with wheel a lot as a child, but in ‘growing up’, more desk time and some scoliosis has limited my shoulder mobility. I love gentle shoulder opening poses like puppy pose variations, but have to warm up a fair bit before going comfortably into urdhva dhanurasana. I have completely copied this photo from liformes post last week because I loved this photo of a wheel variation! As anyone who has practiced with me knows, I looooove me some backbends. I have a very bendy/hypermobile spine and being in extension feels so good. However, that same hypermobility can easily lead to instability and overdoing it. I read an interesting article (link below) this morning by David Keil (highly recommend his Functional Anatomy of Yoga book btw) about survey results relating to low back pain/injuries in yoga. Perhaps the most insightful part of the article was a handful of survey participant comments at the end. About half mentioned that they felt their low back pain/injury was caused by aggressive adjustments in backbends/forward bends/twists (😳) and the other half mentioned that the pain/injury was caused by overdoing it in backbends/forward bends/twists, often due to hypermobility not balanced by stability/strength. The article was a great reminder to me as a student that it is so important to be mindful in my practice of how my body feels minute-to-minute and not to rush in and out of poses or force myself into a pose when my body is not prepared. It was also a great reminder to me as a teacher of how crucial it is to be constantly observing and seeking feedback when cuing and assisting/adjusting students. Please tell your teachers if something does not feel right. You are the best judge of what is going on in your body (and isn't that a key goal of yoga anyway - acute awareness of the body through consistent practice?) and you should never "tough it out" because the teacher "must" know better. That said, mindful and intentional backbends are 🙌 - it's great for the spine to get out of the shape of a chair. focusing more on trying to reopen up my shoulders. shoulder openers are my favorite because i think thats where most of my tension is built up & stored. and that release- that pull up, over, & out just feels so good and refreshing. pulling your posture into place and opening up the breath.

So I have been trying to get back into a good rhythm of work and play and working out and resting. Then I went to the gym yesterday and ... had no plan and couldn’t think of anything to do. Which reminded me, that a plan is just as helpful as going with the flow. Anyway, I ended up doing a workout I actually filmed some time ago @aspria_de in Berlin. Legs and abs, my favorites for posture and stability. And thought I’d share it :). Here you go Intervalls of 45 secs sidewalks and 30 secs sprints on the stairs. 5 rounds to warm up, then the circuit: Posterior chain kick and resistance pull (x15 each side) Squat jumps (x20) and single leg squats (not the trx version, just using them for stability - try not to pull yourself up but use those legs!) x15 each leg resistance side Kicks, keep core strong! Bosu ball tricep push ups x15 Knee ups x25 each legs Finish with some abs to exhaustion And then.... repeat 🙈 4-5 times - ouch . #tuesdaytraining #functionalframe #aspriaberlin at Aspria Berlin Ku'damm

This was hard to get my leg to bend down from their normal position on wheel. I will have some work to do on this but, I do see improvements. Little by little I'll get there.
