This little batch of kombucha is flavored with elderberry syrup - a new idea for me generated to curb waste. We were feeling a bug come on a few weeks ago so I made a batch of elderberry syrup complete with spices and immune supporting herbs. There was plenty left after our regimen and I just now figured out what to do with remainder that has been diligently waiting in the fridge for any lingering infections while slowly inching towards spoilage. I'm excited to see how the kombucha culture handles additions like reishi, echinacea, Oregon grape, cottonwood bud, elecampane, and osha. What will result from these antimicrobial and aromatic additions? . . . . . . . . . #kombucha #scoby #fermentedfoods #fermentation #fermenteddrinks #wildcrafting #herbalmedicine #herbfarm #herbs #elderberry #elderberrysyrup #osha #reishi #balsampoplar #cottonwood #elecampane #oregongrape at Tenino, Washington

Meal worm production take #3 Chickens love them, but that's if I let them have them, honestly. Nutty by themselves, I freeze them for a few days, dry roast, powder and keep in fridge. "If we now take mealworms as an example (since they are our farm bug of choice), the protein content of fresh weight ranges from 14 to 25 grams per hundred. Now if you were to dry-roast your mealworms, the protein content jumps to a whopping 55% and you still retain a good chunk of those vitamins, minerals and polyunsaturated fats (including Omega-3 and 6)." from http://www.ediblebugfarm.com/blog/edible-insects-nutritional-content/ I just bought 100 of them for $3. I won't be able to have any for quite a few months yet, they need to get through their full breeding cycle and lay eggs again. I'm not in a rush, the kids are fascinated by them. I can't wait to show them all their forms and the simple upkeep for them. Plus, I need to get in the mind set of eating bugs again 💁

The Jade and the Night Blooming Cereus: A Love Story… Every year, since I started studying herbal medicine, my teacher has given me a cutting from his night blooming cereus cactus, (Selenicereus grandiflorus), so that I could grow my own medicine. I was told it was easy to grow, but, I either over watered, (most likely) or under watered, and the cuttings never survived. Then, a few months back, a friend gave me a jade cutting, (which I have also proven unsuccessful with in the past; and since I had an already prepared pot with sandy soil (and what I thought was a dead night blooming cereus cutting), I decided to drop the ever so tiny jade clipping, into the same pot. I had no expectation of anything, (always a good place to start) and, I watered and drained the pot thoroughly. The very next day after I planted the jade, a small, but noticeable growth appeared on the night blooming cereus cutting. It was a curious thing and I couldn’t decide if it was my imagination, or indeed an actual sign of life? Each day, for the next week I watched the formerly dead cactus, spring into action, as it started to expand a few millimeters every day. Its now about two months since I planted the jade shoot, and both plants are thriving. The pot is so tiny, but these two specimens seem to be friends, egging each other on to grow ever stronger. I have decided to leave them in the same pot over the winter months and not force a separation just yet. I love watching these plant souls move from toddlers to teenagers and I am so grateful that I persevered with the project. (It only took six tries). Never give up!:) Medicinally, I was taught that Selenicereus Grandiflorus is useful for angina, palpitations, anxiety and panic attacks. It also increases circulation and tones the heart muscle. You can read more about its medicinal uses on a great blog post written by Chris Marano at his website, ClearpathHerbals.com at New York, New York

Making Osha Root extract! My dear friend @rachelisara sent me a bottle of her homemade osha root extract and it was amazing for helping my little guy's allergic response and addressing his chronic tonsillitis😄😄😄. Because it worked so well, she kindly sent me an ounce of her Osha Root. Osha Root is difficult to find and has been over harvested, so it's really special to be able to make this right now.🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱 It's been out soaking in the sunlight for a couple of days and now I'm putting it away for at least two months to macerate and bring out the most of its medicinal power. This incredible root is also called bear root and love root because bears go out and search for it after coming out of hibernation🐻🐻🐻. It's amazing for tonifying the lungs and for increasing the release of oxytocin, the love hormone 💕💕💕💕💕💕 #osharoot #osharootextract #herbalism #medicinewoman #homeapothecary #healingnaturally #ilovemyfamily #mittenswellness #iloveherbs #rootmedicine #clinicalherbalism #bearroot #wildcrafting #extracts #loveroot #plantmedicine at Boulder, Colorado

⊳ A PLANT SPIRIT MEDICINE STORY ⊲ { part 1.} . There’s an undeniable understanding as a plant initiate of the nuances that exist in the spaces between as plants communicate with us, I call this space “soft fascination” it’s the moment between the in-breath & the out-breath we’re our plant ally is participating as our “other” in the non ordinary reality as well as “normal” reality with an exchange of oxygen & carbon dioxide, medicines offered both in spirit & in body . @maiatoll calls it the second song, the visceral understanding that doesn’t come from knowledge written in books or taught in schools but from initiation & experience, which from my awareness & observation means we must dieta with plants - medicine & offerings in their absolute totality, through their cycles of growth over time & seasons in deep reverence & quite attuned space, we must learn to listen. This has been so confirmed for me in the recent book I read Thus Spoke The Plant, it’s not about the plants fitting into our structures and confined egoic version of their teachings, using our human platform to give them a voice, but residing in their domain, allowing their voice to move through us not from us, and unfortunately most of what I see is still working from this perspective, were plants are grown in large quantities to be literally raped of their medicines because we humans only want one part of them, and we speak for them without their song which is big life changing medicina. The way I guide my students is through gaining insight from their own relationship & experience from their cellular memory with the earth, plants, elements, infact I mostly give “recommended reading” info after not before so as not to disrupt the threads of their own insights as they’re strengthening & establishing these filaments & fractals . Although I’ve known plants & herbalism and had a deep connection to earth wisdom codes most of my life, I’ve really only had the “go ahead” to share at the level I am now recently, as I move into a body of work that is very deeply rooted in sovereignty, reverence & shamanic practice, being able to name myself a wisdom keeper of earth medicine has been earned (to be cont'd) at Wombat State Forest

WOW today is raw for me. I got up, felt like I “couldn’t even,” took a bath, + basically avoided all the things for as long as possible. I just heated up my breakfast bowl (the literal last food we have in the house), then smashed the bowl to smithereens carrying it to the bar island where we eat. I couldn’t stop sobbing for a good few minutes 😂😂In hindsight, I can laugh. Everything feels extra significant, extra much. I feel sooo sensitive. Here’s to consciously making today better via the little things. Anyone else feeling raw today?

I think it’s a pretty general consensus that mushrooms kick ass. I have began a regimen of a taking teaspoon if dried and powdered cordyceps and lion’s mane mushrooms every morning in my lemon water. Both mushrooms have an array of benefits, but I’m focusing on brain health. CORDYCEP’S constituents protect the neurons and nerves, therefore boosting the brain and nervous system and ultimately helping to reduce stress and build adrenal function. Cordy also functions as an antidepressant and enhances mental cognition, decreasing brain fog. Stress, adrenal fatigue, depression and brain fog are all interrelated, like a set of dominos. LIONS MANE is also an amazing brain supporter and has been shown to reduce neurodegenerative diseases in mice. Damn mushrooms, I’m continuously in awe of you. As Paul Stamets says, “lion’s mane mushroom in particular has drawn the attention of researchers for its notable nerve-regeneration properties”. #medicinalmushrooms #wildcrafting #cordyceps #lionsmane #brainhealth #herbalremedies #herbalism

The care + keeping of your pits: • The vast majority of deodorants on the market contain heavy toxins—aluminum, formaldehyde, parabens, + phthalates, among others—that a) increase the body’s toxic load in general, + b) mess with endocrine health, as hormone glands are found in your pits, not to mention the fact that the skin readily absorbs much of what’s placed on it. • Your pits are begging for regular TLC. We invite you to start thinking of pit care as just as essential for your holistic wellness as face washing. Your endocrine system + natural scent will thank you. Here’s what you can do to love on your pits: • 1) Wash your pits every day with a gentle, clean soap or body wash sans synthetic ingredients. 2) Exfoliate your pits 2x/week with the same high-quality exfoliater you would use on your face—right now we’re obsessed with @andalounaturals CannaCell line ✨ 3) Make a homemade pit mask (like a hair or face mask, but for your pits) once a week with 1 tbsp bentonite clay (find it on Amazon), 1 tsp apple cider vinegar, + 1-2 tsp water. Mix until the consistency is like thick mud, then spread evenly on your pits. Let sit for 5-20 minutes to aid the process of detoxification before washing off with warm water. We recommend that you start with 5 minutes the first week, + work your way up to 20 minutes. If the ACV is too irritating for your skin, you can experiment with using just water, or with adding witch hazel toner. 4) Find an amazing natural deodorant. Some people swear by crystal deodorant, while others opt for a more traditional container with clean ingredients, such as @native. Play around with what works for you 5) After washing, tone your pits daily. We recommend faithful witch hazel toner, + love Thayer’s with rosewater ❣️ You might surprise yourself with just how happy your pits get 🙌🏼 • • #traceholistic #nourishyourwild #folkgreen #beauty #healthy #wellnesscoach #hiking #yoga #yogi #naturals #ethical #sustainableliving #foodismedicine #yogabarre #keto #wildcrafting #greenliving #fitnessmotivation #glutenfree #cleanbeauty #mindfulness #letschat #wholefoods #skincareroutine #podcast #meditation #plantbased #ahimsa #handcraftedwithlove

Ayurveda takes into consideration many different aspects of an herb. It has a unique way of understanding digestion and nutrition. It focuses on your body's reaction to food rather than the nutrients it contains. By focusing on experience rather than content, Ayurveda helps you interpret the medicinal compatibility of food with your body as you taste it, chew it, swallow it, digest it, and eliminate it. It has a few aspects of which rasa (taste)is just one..it also has virya and vipak aspects too virya is the herbs potency also know as it's thermal energetics is it heating or cooling? How does it effect the "ugni" or digestive fire in your gastrointestinal tract and how it  effects the peripheral tissues of the body... will it increase or decrease metabolism in those peripheral tissues. (Think tissue states that is where we are going next) Vipak is the post digestion influence of the herb after it has mixed with the gastric juices of the body..after tissue states we will start taking a look at  the digestive system..as it's critical to your Dosha and to your health..have you heard the expression "you are What you eat"? Well it's not entirely accurate..it's more of "you are what you absorb" I'll go into more detail on virya tomorrow I 2 the final part..'m mentioning them because they are important but they are independent of taste.I want you to know things like how to identify astringent foods that pull moisture from your body. You would experience the astringency directly because they make your tongue feel dry.It might be reasonable to assume, based on your experience, that foods which make your mouth feel dry might also make your skin dry. This is important to your Dosha so tomorrow we will finish with Rasa, Virya and Vipak and move onto tissue states.. #apothecary #herbalist #herbalism #wildcrafting #plantmedecine #plantallies #naturesmedicine

Morning board - They still don't look as good as I want them to. I want to feel like I'm looking at a piece of art, like it looks too good to eat. I was looking at small serving bowls yesterday and thought It might be a good idea for the juicy fruit/bulk yogourt, but I'm not willing to buy them new.. I'll keep checking the thrift store on my monthly trip to town. As for bringing more peace into the home, it sure does the job - I'm enjoying trying to make it look better every time, serving it and seeing the excitement. A positive side effect of doing these instead of traditional sit down meals is that I'm saving a lot of time and stretching out the food diversity for longer periods of time.. the ingredients stick around for longer when only a small amount makes it on the board at once.

Holiday gift giving made easy.  You can use a few household foods and some of your wildcrafting or garden harvests to create natural and healthy facial scrubs or face masks. Here I have oxeye daisy, rose petals and oatmeal with just a little brown sugar.  Blend it to a powder. You can use a variety of herbs. You can then use honey, milk or yogurt to mix the dried mixture for a great face mask or exfoliating scrub. Natural beauty is just that....natural and healthy.  This powder can be bottled in a decorative bottle or jar with a handmade tag with directions. Love where you live and everyday is a holiday! . Done the city thing. Done the burbs Spent alot of time in the country. Living somewhere in between. . Water is essential, and hustle bustle minimum. Oh to own a peice of it where you can breath, and your neighbours don't know your business.. actually no neighbours at all haha 🤗 unless they are awesome of course.. . Wow for someone who cares alot about people, I'm pretty bad at wanting to be around alot of them 😉 But the reason is not because I don't like others... it's that I am too sensitive to others moods, opinions, words and even presence can make me shut down. So strange, and at the same I don't care what people think? I am stuck in a catch 22 of weird creative soul quirks, innate desire to fix or heal any ailment thrown at me. Love bonding but also find it taxing. And if I can't heal I don't see the point of me being there ya know? Or maybe it's just social anxiety hiding behind good intentions. . A nurse is the right job for me that's for sure... If only I got to heal and spend the time I want with those humans. I'll burn my candle at both ends if it means it's helping, but it also means I gotta recluse myself, disappear when I wana and not be seen. Because I guess I feel I don't have anything else to offer, I can talk alot or struggle to string a conversation together. Go figure?! Deffinately on me and I know that :) just expressing! . Safe to say I can't pin myself down, but can you? Does anyone else think about that stuff? Probs. Your awesome though, don't try and pin yourself to anything, we fluctuate and are multifaceted, different people/energies bring our different parts of us. It's so cool to figure that out! I feel like I'm watching a documentary on human interaction/behaviour more and more these days. Ha! This week I transformed a found, forgotten trinket into a stylish & bright new adornment. Wreath making. 🌲 One of my favorite traditions is making fresh wreaths. It's such a meditative thing to do, and it makes me feel connected to the beautiful gifts nature gives us even in the dead of winter. Having the house filled with the scent of evergreens isn't bad, either! 🤗 What winter traditions do you look forward to? ❄ . . . #yule #wintersolstice #yuletide #christmas #winter #evergreens #trees #nature #wildcrafting #wreath #wreathmaking #traditions

It was such an honor to meet this beautiful soul at the market I’m working at, and these necklaces look so amazing on her! Especially layered like this! 😍 From top to bottom they’re: oak, hibiscus, and jasmine. And if you want to layer your necklaces make sure to get them at least 2 sizes apart! I believe these ones are 16”, 20”, and 24”. And make sure to send me your pictures of them so I can post them! 😁♥️🌿

NETTLE: has long been loved for its medicinal uses. You can use practically every part of this herb including; the leaves, roots and seeds. . Since nettle contains calcium, potassium, silicic acid, and iron, I am currently steeping dried leaves to sip on throughout the day to help with my iron levels. . Here are my top 3 reasons for loving on this beautiful herb: . 1. Astringent actions that can aid it slowing or stopping bleeding from wounds and nose bleeds or heaving menstrual bleeding 2. Anti-inflammatory properties thought to aid in the healing of eczema, hives or other skin rashes 3. Detoxifying herb with diuretic action, increasing urine production and elimination of waste products . On top of all that, nettle is antiallergenic and has been used for hay fever, asthma, itchy skin, and insect bites! The best part? When the leaves are cooked, they taste just like spinach! 🌿 at Calgary, Alberta

Dehydrated Oyster Mushrooms. Did some experiments on dehydrating temperature and found out in the process that most instructions online are incorrect if we are looking at flavors, not just food preservation. Dehydrating my foraged mushrooms at low temperature such as 110 °F (37 °C) ended up completely tasteless. Dehydrating them at higher temperature with a sweet spot between 170 °F to 190 °F (76 to 87 °C) and I ended up with fantastic mushroom flavors which reminded me of porcini powder. I'll try that temperature and even higher as soon as I forage more. I think dehydrated and roasted in the process could be incredible . I use the powder in my acorn hummus and plantbased cheeses but my main use will be to create some California Dashi (Japanese soup stock) with California kelp and locally foraged mushrooms, From there, I can add wild plants or even fermented roots brine to the stock to make delicious soup . I also went back to using stone knifes for foraging (broke the blade of the last one when I dropped it on a stone). Not only as a mean to staying close the earth but they're extremely effective, the ragged but extremely sharp edges are perfect to cut mushrooms, stems and herbs . I used to do some stone knapping but this one was made by someone else. As soon as I can get my hand on the right stones, I'll make my own again. I'm out of practice though but that's alright, it will come back. Knife made by talented @bruces.flintknapping . Bowl made by @sheldonceramics . Mushrooms made by local elves, fairies and willow trees. #mushrooms #stoneknife #knapping #dehydration #dashi #foraging #wildcrafting #localflavors #stonetools #primitiveknife #shrooms #stoned

This is one of our currently omnipresent thermos bottles. It's so comforting to have a sip of tea while out in the cold. ✨ When I go foraging, I like to add all sorts of wild finds to my tea on the way - in this case: yarrow (Schafgarbe). One more way to feel connected to the natural world. 🌲

It's another local craft market day for me today. That means handblending yet more homegrown, organic herbs to make tea, which continues to sell out. It's such a lovely process, having your hands run through deliciously fragrant dried herbs! Not to mention all the joy of growing medicinal herbs from seed, nuturing healthy, organic soil, hand picking with my kids and hanging up to dry. If you're Kapiti local and still needing xmas pressies or just need to indulge yourself, come on down to Te Ra Waldorf School this afternoon from 2.30-5pm. I'll be selling my range of herbal teas, natural skincare, smudgesticks + needle felted craft. There will be lots of other beautiful hand crafted & locally made stalls to choose from. Otherwise check out the link in my bio to shop online. X

A healing cup of chaga tea has many benefits, including being anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and a good source of vitamins and minerals. 🍄 Chaga is a fungus that grows primarily on birch trees in colder climates. It is vitally important when foraging for chaga to harvest it in a sustainable manner 💚 Read more about the benefits of chaga and how to forage and harvest it sustainably at the link in my profile! 💫 . . . . . https://www.growforagecookferment.com/harvesting-chaga/ #chaga #chagafungus #chagamushroom #chagatea #mushroomtea #mushrooms #fungus #birchfungus #foraging #wildcrafting #sustainableharvest #naturalmedicine #herbalremedy #naturalremedy #herbaltea #medicinalmushroom #growforagecookferment

Meet Stanleya pinnata, also known as Princes’ Plume. It has been used as a Native American traditional medicinal plant and food source. It was used by the Hopi, Zuni, Paiute, and Navajo. The background you see is Rawe Peak at the elevation of 8343 feet. ⠀ Uses include the seeds as well as young leaves and stems can be cooked and has a cabbage like flavor. The water can be changed in boiling to remove the bitter taste, this will also remove some of the vitamins and minerals. The roots can be used to make a general wellness tonic. The pulped root can be placed on the gum or in a tooth cavity to relieve toothache. ⠀ The leaves can be used to thatch dwellings. Leaf fibers can be woven into ropes or baskets. In survival situations I’ve heard of this plant being used to make a bow and drill to make fire. Are you in love with this plant yet? ⠀ To identify it, knowing that it is in the Mustard Family is a big help. Brassicaceae or Cruciferae. Did you happen to see the beginning to the word crucifix? This is a tell tale sign that something is in the Mustard family; the flowers are usually bright yellow with 4 petals, all directly across from each other in the semblance of a crucifix. The stalks can grow to be 5-6ft tall. The flowers are reminiscent of cleomes or spider flowers. Stem leaves are lance-shaped and pinnately divided. Slender wands of yellow flowers top tall, stout, smooth, bluish-green, leafy stems. ⠀ I hope that you learned something from me nerding out. Do you guys want to learn more about useful plants in nature? at Dayton, Nevada
