This week I did a rare thing. I dug deep and channeled my inner lioness courage card that I drew during @therivergathering and shared my heart on the @brandandbash blog about this little working vacation journey of ours. I share why the story behind the heartbeat is so important to me, what surprised me most about the first River Gathering, and what I’m most excited about for 2019. If you’re at all curious you can read all about it via the link in my bio. #theriveriscalling . Hey hey Instagram crew! Once in a while it’s nice to hippity hop on here and remind you I don’t alllllways just talk about grief and loss and mountains and running and parenting and hiking. I mean mostly, 😆 but today I’m just here to say hi and introduce myself a bit more to new friends! Growing up everyone called me Andy, and a lot of people still do. I have a big crush on a red bearded fella named @j_laugh_ (I’m also pretty smitten with @jimmy_chin and @therock ) 🤷🏼‍♀️ I love my eggs over easy and always with avocado). I was engaged to someone in my early twenties and called the wedding off less than two months before the date. 😳 I have two degrees; one in education and one in journalism. I started my career as a teacher, but I’m a truly a writer by heart and I’m currently working on my first book! I’m hoping to share more excerpts of it here in the next few months. I also love riding horses and grew up showing competitively when I wasn’t galloping fast and free down the beach in my hometown. My old blind horse Joey turns 25 this year and is happily retired on my in-laws farm. One of my goals for NEXT YEAR is to start riding again and learn a new seat (I know we are barely into 2019 but I’m a total Virgo btw I love me some aspirations and goals!) I’m also a mountaineer and grew up climbing with my dad, it’s one of my great passions in life I can’t imagine living without. I love trail running, lifting weights, and I’m a crappy gardener but I try every year anyway. I love teaching my children how to fall in love with nature and having a lot of family adventures together on the trail. Now that I’ve shared my celebrity crushes and how I eat my eggs, I feel like there’s nothing left to share, but if you’ve got any questions, ask away! ❤️

West Coast Road Trip > Bay Area (cont.) - We headed out to Pacifica Beach, this charming seaside community just outside of SF. Elsa's "fishing homies" tipped her off to the exact location by sending a photo with a hand drawn arrow on a topo map. The angling community is kind of like a secret society where you have to know the hand shake. You've got to know your stuff and play nicely with others. As one of the few women in the community and one of the more talented anglers (my words, not hers), Elsa gets a lot of attention and respect. Her enthusiasm for the sport is captivating. - The waves were rearing up like a bear on its hind legs before smashing into the sand. You could feel the wind almost sucking against you while the water pulled at Elsa’s waders, trying to drag her out to sea. After about an hour with no bites, we decided it was time to pack it up. As we were packing up two surfers entered the waters. Within minutes one of the surfers got caught in a rip tide and was being pushed toward a massive outcropping of rocks that lined the shore for a good distance. I kept watching her almost in disbelief. She HAD to get out of the situation or risk being repeatedly slammed into the rocks. Two other surfers who had finished sessions earlier in the day saw what was going on. I asked if there was anything we could do. They said no. So the three of us started yelling and cheering her on. “Swim for your life!” one of the surfers shouted. “You can do this!” I howled. I ran back to the truck to grab some rope and called 911 on the way. By the time I got back to the rocks the surfer had made it out of danger’s way. We all get in over our heads sometimes; we underestimate the environment. Though she was tired and bedraggled, this woman found the inner strength to save herself. I felt so humbled by the power of nature and grateful that it didn’t turn into something more serious. at Pacifica State Beach

What defines your wildness? We asked galavanter @natasha.ramon “Getting out to the mountains makes me feel strong, powerful, wild, and most importantly, alive. Outside is where I’m meant to be. I learn something new about myself on each and every adventure. Being out in the wilderness allows me to form connections with like-minded people and the earth below my feet. I feel more grounded running along mountain ridges and sitting on their peaks with my hair flying wildly in the wind than I ever could back in the city. Mountains are my wild- and I’m drawn to them from wherever I am in the world.” 📸 @jatthew.may 〰️ Share your story with us by joining our community and tagging your adventures with @gogalavanting and use #GoGalavanting 🌸 at Alberta

West Coast Road Trip > First Stop: Bay Area. - Our hosts were Elsa's chosen family Crystal and her partner Noemi. They live in this section of Oakland that's artsy, industrial, and not yet gentrified. It's a place where you can still find street parking, buy pottery from your neighbor's studio, and eat birria at the corner market. Crystal and Noemi thrive in this environment on the outskirts of the mainstream. Crystal spends her days working with youth in an organization dedicated to enhancing the well-being of the Chicano/Latino/Indígena community in San Francisco. By night, you can find her spinning cumbia under the name of DJ Sin Amores (@chingona_chicana). Crystal is the epitome of the goddess Artemis; the indomitable spirit. She's the type of woman who will defend an older woman on the train (true story). Her partner Noemi is just as dope. She's not afraid to wear her beliefs on the outside - "gender roles are a social construct." Noemi uses a disarming combination of humor and straight talk to challenge the status quo. She doesn't shy away from discussing gender and race. As a result, I always learn something new just being around her and listening. My takeaway is that we need to see a wider variety of imagery demonstrating what it means to be outdoorsy and who "belongs." We need to hear the stories of people who feel marginalized by the industry and society more generally, and support them for speaking out. This is something I hope we can address with Artemis. - Crystal and Noemi took us out for a hike at Stinson Beach. When we arrived, we found the parking lot closed due to the government shutdown. Stinson Beach is a narrow strip of land hemmed in by the Mt Tamalpais Watershed and the ocean. Street parking is nonexistent, so we tried our luck with the McCurdy trail a few miles outside of town. We were unlucky that day. McCurdy is a 5.1 mile out and back with a 1,500 ft climb and no switchbacks. There are almost no ocean views and very little shade until you reach the top of the ridge. That said, I can never complain too much about being out in nature. It was quiet. The sun was warm on a chilly day. And we were building buns of steel! at Marin Headlands

de·vo·tion - love, loyalty, or enthusiasm for a person, activity, or cause. "his (her) courage and devotion to duty never wavered" THIS is my word for the year ( at least for now!) in the season of WINTER I am allowing mySELF to turn inwards- enthusiasm for ME. I have spent the last 10 years ( and way LONGER) trying to please so many others and be of service to help, nourish, empower and inspire- through the work the I do in the world, being a MOTHER, a sister, a daughter.. I LOVE the work I do- it is my DHARMA and I am learning when I am overcompensating for low self esteem in other ways! The word devotion is taking a few different shapes as I understand how to weave it through all the I do, am, create, share and live. It's not like we choose a FEELING or a WORD to guide us through the year and it just HAPPENS. It is a process. It is a DEVOTION in and of itself to weave the feeling tone through our lives. What I did recognize through reflection of 2018 is the I spent a lot of it OUTWARDLY teaching and in a more YANG energy than I had realized. AND IT WAS AWESOME!! AND I AM TAKING TIME TO RELISH IN IT. Taking TIME to go inwards before there is a new wave of speaking and teaching in the coming months. ALLOWING the devotion to the pieces of life that I VALUE and hold the most dear to be: RICH, PURPOSEFUL, POWERFUL, CREATIVE. FULLY accepting WHO I AM and the processes that I take to move through life- not letting ANYONE (including those closest to me!) tell me they should be a certain way for SUCCESS. What if the DEVOTION to WHO you really was unapologetic? I am NOT who "THEY" say I need to be. I am NOT their version of success. I am the exception. I am devoted to ME. What WORD, FEELING TONE, DESIRE are you weaving into your days? Stay Wild, xx. #borntobewild #wildwomen at Kincardine, Ontario

Our founder Nicole Davenport is taking over our feed to share the highlights of an epic west coast road trip that she and her wife Elsa Flores and their pup Sonora recently completed. The pair loaded up their truck in Los Angeles and drove to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. They skied, hiked, fished and found some great eats along the way. At Artemis, we believe that exploration is the key to connecting with your inner authority, the compass that keeps you on your path. It’s about stepping into the unknown, testing yourself and allowing for the possibility of failure and new beginnings. This trip was all of that and more. Nicole and Elsa are stoked to be able to share their adventures!

A few weeks ago, I was out on a bird hunt with two of my closest friends and our rat pack of dogs. We were nearing the end of the day, paused for a spell to catch our breath and give the dogs some water. In this moment, I couldn’t help but to think of my grandpa and how much he would have loved to be out in the hills, shotgun in hand, nothing but sage-covered hillsides as far as the eye could see. He passed on in March of last year and losing him has been extremely tough for our family. He was a true lover of the outdoors and along with my dad, a huge source of inspiration for my brother and I to spend as much time in the wild as possible. I’ll be forever grateful for his guidance, teaching me to shoot BB guns and shotguns, how to differentiate real gold from pyrite (they’re both still really pretty and special in my opinion!), and always answering my ever persistent questions about any creature we came across on our adventures. In his later years, we would sit and reminisce on his days of chasing sea-run cutties off Vashon Island in Puget Sound. In those moments, I saw light in his eyes and that is how I choose to remember him. During this pause, I bent down to hug on Kai, kissed her little head and looked down at my feet. Next to my right foot, in the dirt, I spied this perfect heart-shaped rock. I took it as a sign that although my grandad wasn’t physically there with me, that beautiful spirit of his was and always will be. That heart rock is going to stay in my game vest so I can carry a little bit of him with me ♥️ ———————————————————————— #hunting #uplandhunting #birdhunting #chukar #chukarhunting #upland #optoutside #natureheals #exploreoregon #oregon #wildher #familyiseverything at Oregon

Early that morning orcas swam into the protected bay where we were anchored. After I helped the hikers, kayakers, and boats get launched for the day I saw the orcas were still nearby. Overwhelmed by excitement, I launched my kayak in a hurry, paddled as fast as I could deep into the bay and was thrilled to spot the orcas again. • I had launched in such a hurry I didn’t have time to grab a camera, so I tried to get some video with my phone, but it wasn’t worthwhile. So I put the phone down (often key to enjoying life’s best moments anyways) and just embraced the incredible experience of being in my kayak as orcas hunted and played nearby— spyhopping, tail lobbing, even playing with a fishing buoy. • I joined other paddlers and we navigated through the small islands so we could watch from a respectful distance, without getting in the way of the orcas or disturbing other wildlife, like a terrified harbor seal hiding in the rocky shoreline. • Paddling with orcas was definitely a highlight of all the summers I’ve spent in Alaska. 💙 Thanks to a guest for sharing her photos with me. • • • I’m paddling with a Lendal Storm, available at www.lendalna.com at Southeast Alaska

This holiday season I was lucky enough to have my best friend on the planet visit me in New Zealand. We traveled for about three weeks and it was the best time of my life. However, we were so busy I never really thought about what I wanted my New Years resolution to be. Honestly, these things never really work out for me anyway so I just kind of shrugged it off. But I’ve been thinking about it today and figured it couldn’t hurt to have one. So this year, I hope to be more transparent. In less than two days, I will be taking off for Mexico on a two week climbing adventure to El Potrero Chico. Not quite this type of scenery, but I’ve heard the place I’m going has a similar type of magic. . This photo was taken back in 2013 as we made our way up the last couple hundred feet to the summit of Pico de Orizaba, the third tallest summit in the continental US. . The past month reconnecting with family and friends in San Diego has been nourishing to my soul, and I am a thankful to have such a wonderful community to come back to whenever I make the trek back home. In the upcoming months, I have a lot of traveling ahead accompanied with the pursuit of a bigger dream. #WORKOU🌲 of the day: . Jog to a fallen log... • 10 x box jumps on log • 20 x quick hops over log • 10 x step ups on log • 20 x quick toe taps • 10 x incline pushups on log • 20 x mountain climbers Repeat 2-3 times Jog home! . PROPER FORM: Box jumps - This is a squat jump onto the log, so choose a log your comfortable with. If it's too high alternate to step up then squat jump off. . Quick hops - Put your hands on the log for balance and hop your feet over then back again, kinda like your mogul skiing. Try to do feet together, but one at a time works until you get comfortable. It should be hop-hop-hop super fast not hop-pause-hop. Speed is the goal! . Step-ups - Alternate legs as you step up onto the log. Go slow and controlled, make your muscles do it, not momentum. . Quick Toe Taps - Facing the log bring one foot up to tap the top then hop to switch. Do them as fast as you can! . Incline pushups - Go slow and only to 90° angle at the elbows, pause long enough to feel your pecs engage (feel it going into your armpits!) then push-up slowly. . Mountain climbers - face the log with your hands on top. Step your feet back to plank and feel your core engage before starting. Bring one knee as close to chest as possible while maintaining plank position. Switch sides. Lift your fingertips so you're not gripping the log! . Comment below if you like this workout! . 👖 Signature baselayer capri in Grey. _______________________ #workoutoftheday #workout #outdoorworkout #outdoorworkouts #fitspo #pushups #mountainclimbers #trailrun #trailrunning #trainingrun #strengthtraining #wildworkout #outdoorfitness #adventureathlete #athletic #wildher #bewildher at Squamish, British Columbia

CREATIVITY HEALS. I took a year off of making things with my hands- all of 2018 pretty much. Before that I had a thriving jewelry business and would ALWAYS talk about how making with my hands was the catalyst for my healing journey- and what helped me grow & share Medicine with the world. ✨ 2018 served to be a year of big lessons (awesome ones still) and my using my VOICE a lot, talking, writing , hosting - don’t get me wrong I LOVED it. 🙏🏼 ✨ AND- there is something about this year that is calling me back to working creatively with my hands and heart as medicine to those stumble upon my creations and feel the energy from them. ✨ This winter season in particular is calling me to be in CEREMONY & DEVOTION - to me, Mother Earths Medicines, cycles, seasons- with out the TEACHING about it.. JUST BEING IN IT.🔥🖤 ••• This is something that is pretty foreign to me- but I NEED to listen. There is something waiting for me woven in the devotion of this season. So for now I MAKE. I LEARN. I bow in devotion. In CEREMONY. In AWE. How divine is this little candles, light ambiance? And the heart orb?! 🙏🏼 ••• Anyone else ready to get back to the simple things the you KNOW make you happy, healthy & creative? #borntobewild #creativityeveryday at Kincardine, Ontario

And I am being called to break EVERYTHING down - that I thought I was supposed to be/do/create this year. ✨ So many things that I have been “creating” or talking about for years feels out of alignment right now.. ✨ What this is showing me is to GO INSIDE, to practice what I preach to the DEPTHS. It’s trippy to be feeling this. #truthbomb ✨ AND freeing, expansive, ALIVE, devoted and the exact right time to burn it all down. A deep urge to KNOW MY ROOTS, my ancestors, the land I came from. This will only be shown to me through a different kind of inner work than I have been practicing for years.. I turn 40 this year(stoked!) and something is SO DIFFERENT IN ME.. ✨ What if you did let it all go? Allll the things you thought you had to DO/be in this next year and truly surrendered to ceremony & devotion to what’s INSIDE? #askyourself #borntobewild at Kincardine, Ontario

It was fun getting my land legs back in Europe, but I’m stoked to get my sea legs back soon! 🌊 Counting down the days until I head back to boat-life and guiding next week ✈️ ⛴ 🇦🇶 • • • Pictured: Lendal Storm paddle, available at www.lendalna.com at Southeast Alaska
