This #wildlifewednesday we'd like to introduce you to Callie! Rescued in the middle of September, which also happens to be Manatee Awareness Month, Callie loves her seagrass, and the Manatee Team is keeping busy picking it by the bucketful fresh from the lagoon for her. #manatee #antillean #endangered #wildliferehabilitation #racingextinction 📸 by K. A #wanderlustwednesday and #wildlifewednesday photo for the week. I’m so jealous of my youngest brother while he’s exploring #SouthAfrica and Kenya and going on a safari or two this week. ___ He’s sending me such great photos. Loved this one of the zebras and look, a baby/foal in there too. Have you gone on a safari or like me, is also high on your travel wish list? #Africa #ig_africa #ig_southafrica #africansafari #safari #bucketlist at Johannesburg, Gauteng

#Repost @usgs ・・・ Bats, bats, and more bats!! #Didyouknow that when young bats huddle together in groups biologists call it a cuddle? Did you also know that there are more than 1,000 species of bats, some the size of a human thumb and others with a six-foot wing span? 🦇 Bats are unique and valuable animals. They eat insects that damage crops and carry diseases, and many bat species also play important roles in plant pollination and seed dispersal. One of the main reasons we study bats at the USGS is because of the devastating disease they are currently facing called White-nose syndrome (WNS). This disease is caused by a cold-loving fungus that infects skin of the muzzle, ears, and wings of hibernating bats. 🦇 First detected in New York State in the winter of ‘06-‘07, WNS has spread to 31 states and 5 Canadian provinces. Scientists at the USGS National Wildlife Health Center discovered, characterized and named the fungus that causes WNS, and pioneered laboratory techniques for studying effects of the fungus on hibernating bats. 🦇 For more information on WNS visit: https://go.usa.gov/xnrDT 🦇 Photo Credit: Alan Cressler, USGS 🦇 #USGS #science #bat #bats #batappreciationmonth #wildlifewednesday #whitenosesyndrome #wildlifedisease #wildlifehealth

Wildlife Wednesday: Spiders are not the most popular species. In fact, most people get squeamish at the mere mention of these 8-legged anthropods. In Canada, we only have two venomous spiders– there’s the northern black widow in southern Ontario and the western black widow in areas of southern British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan. Most spiders, like this one, are actually not aggressive and tend to bite only when threatened. Partial proceeds from the purchase of each @CWF_FCF sweater and hat supports species at risk and the habitats they call home. #wildlifewednesday #halloweenedition I believe this is a young Tree Ent. I could be wrong. I asked but it took forever to answer, as ents do, and I couldn't wait around for an answer. The word Ent is derived from the Anglo-Saxon word for giant, which, in its original usage, categorized any large, humanoid creatures such as giants or trolls. This tree, though not malevolent or macabre, is certainly mysterious. #halloweenhorticulture <-- also, this is the new series hashtag so be sure to check out the others as I explore the weirder, spookier side of landscaping. . . . . Pair of Sandhill Cranes NPS/Patrick Myers #WildlifeWednesday -This sandhill crane couple recently arrived back in the San Luis Valley from up north, and are enjoying the gorgeous weather in the valley this week! After blizzard conditions Monday, daytime highs are back up to around 60 degrees F, and conditions are sunny and calm. Cranes spend part of their spring and fall each year in the valley. In fall, they typically arrive around late September, then leave for New Mexico wintering grounds around mid-November. “If you have the eyes, you have the shot...” 😍💕🐯 This Sumatran Tiger was agitated and pacing for a good 20 minutes before he noticed me, alone, outside his enclosure. I had the lens on him at 400mm waiting for those eyes to see me and when they did - I froze. So did my heart. Clearly, this was the alpha in the situation. I have no idea how wildlife photographers do this in real life, with real predators- without having a fight or flight reaction every time. It was pretty intense for a zoo moment. #WildlifeWednesday - Whether poised at a river bend or cruising the coastline with slow, deep wingbeats, the Great Blue Heron is a majestic sight. This stately heron with its subtle blue-gray plumage often stands motionless as it scans for prey or wades belly deep with long, deliberate steps. They may move slowly, but Great Blue Herons can strike like lightning to grab a fish or snap up a gopher. In flight, look for this widespread heron’s tucked-in neck and long legs trailing out behind. #AllAboutBirdsDotOrg Harkness Memorial State Park, Waterford, Connecticut September 2017. #WildlifeWednesday - Seagulls don't always get the credit they deserve for how intelligent they are. One great example of their intellect is on display here. Mollusks make up a significant portion of a gull's diet and when they cannot open a shell with their beak, they will do so by dropping the animal from a significant height in order to crack it and get to the delicious mollusk inside. #WildlifeWednesday - The Great Blue Heron is the largest of the North American herons with long legs, a sinuous neck, and thick, daggerlike bill. Head, chest, and wing plumes give a shaggy appearance. In flight, the Great Blue Heron curls its neck into a tight “S” shape; its wings are broad and rounded and its legs trail well beyond the tail. #allaboutbirdsdotorg Harkness Memorial State Park, Waterford, Connecticut September 2017. 🌿Wildlife Wednesday 🌿 This week it's our two-toed Sloth! Our sloth's name is Chewy and he loves to hang upside down and eat TONS of sweet potato! This series is called "Running Away from a Grumpy Elephant"... Our friend, I named him Elliot, was starting to feel like his quiet stroll was being interrupted by annoying tourists, so he decided to charge us (and many other vehicles that showed up) to reclaim his personal space. Can't say I blame him. It should be noted that we were extremely excited to see this guy, even though we stared at his butt for an hour before he turned around. #elephantproblems . . . . #wildlife #rwanda #wildlifephotography #naturephotography #africa #africanwildlife #safari #akagera #discoverwildlife #wildanimals #animalkingdom #wildlifewednesday #elephant #givemespace #elephantlove at Akagera National Park

#WildlifeWednesday This Thomisidae, more commonly known as a crab spider, was spotted at Raven Run Nature Sanctuary. Depending on who you ask, the term “crab spider” comes from their resemblance to crabs, or to how they hold their two front pairs of legs, or how they sometimes move sideways and backwards. Fun fact, crab spiders do not build webs to trap their prey, instead they sit on or near flowers and fruit, waiting to snatch the visiting insects.
