As usual Queen Elizabeth's hive inspection was perfect and such a joy today! Her hive is doing so well! They have now drawn comb on all but 2 of the frames in the honey super that I put on 10 days ago. They are busy storing honey in it, but it isn't full yet and the honey is not capped yet meaning that the moisture content of the honey isn't quite right just yet. When it is, they will cap it with wax. Once was is capped, it is ready for extraction. The 1st two photos are of the bees eating honey. If you look closely, you can see a couple of their tongues (proboscis). You can see that we found HMQE in the video and following pic - isn't she just lovely?! In the last 2 pics, you can see brood, pollen arching around the brood and capped honey arched around the pollen on the top outside edges. The last photo is a full deep frame of capped honey, and man was it heavy! Long live HMQE! All hail the queen! #tennesseehoneybytiffany #savethebees #beekeeper #beekeepingisfun #newbee #obsessedwithbees #womeninbeekeeping #backyardbeekeeping #beelife #apiary at Spring Hill, Tennessee

Well today's adventure with Queen Abigail's hive didn't go like I had imagined it would, but I think that is pretty normal 😂 the new Queen Abigail III was alive and well still in her cage. The bees seemed calm around her and I was glad to see that! As planned, I tried to shake the bees through a queen excluder to be certain there was no another queen in the hive, but that did not work out...the bees didnt go down through the queen excluder like I thought they would. I'm sure it was me being a newbee! Either way, instead of proceeding further, I decided to just put everything back together and release HMQAIII and let them sort it out, so we will just watch and see what happens! I didnt get a photo of Queen Abigail III so you'll have to wait until another time to get to see her. All hail the queen! #tennesseehoneybytiffany #savethebees #beekeeper #beekeepingisfun #newbee #obsessedwithbees #womeninbeekeeping #backyardbeekeeping #beelife #apiary at Spring Hill, Tennessee

@hammerhives

These two were so fun to watch! My triple stacked hive was busting at the seems and I can’t split it until I’ve got a new queen, so I replaced some heavy honey frames with foundation to give them something to do and to make sure they don’t leave my hive! For all beginners this is a worker bee (female) and a drone (male) the larger of the two is the drone. He got tangled up in some sticky honey so she decided to get a piggy back ride while she cleaned him up in order for him to fly. This big guy will be crucial in the mating process once I do split my hive and add a virgin to the new hive I’ve created. I’m so happy they’re doing well far away from any pesticide. #honeybees #workerbee #drone #womeninbeekeeping #cleanup #peaceful #bestjobever

Well, I have a new queen! I now have a pretty Buckfast girl marked with a bright white freckle for easy ID in the future! A very kind, seasoned pro beekeeper helped me find the Africanized queen so we could replace her. We had to shake all of them onto the ground to spot her better. With monsoons looming over us today, I was nervous how they would act with the wind and slight drizzle. The cool rain actually slowed them down a bit. Had it been a nice sunny day, there would have been a lot of angry bees in flight. Looking forward to having nicer honeybees to work with! I don't feel so bad, now, for never having seen the old queen in over a year! Look at the pictures and you'll see what I mean. Her color was just like the rest of them! She blended right in. Once their Africanized genes are bred out, my beekeeping adventures should be much more pleasant. #bee #beek #backyardbeekeeping #womenbeekeepers #womeninbeekeeping #beekeeper #beekeeping #nobeesnofood #abeja #abeille #langstroth #hive #beehive #ahb #buckfast #bees #beesofinstagram #beestuff #beelove #beesofig #arizona #sonorandesert #desertbees #honey #honeybee #miel #apismellifera at Whetstone, Arizona

Well the results are in. Sadly, Queen Abigail III's hive (the one full of drama) does in fact have tracheal mites in addition to varroa mites. The 1st pic is a photo looking through the microscope at the trachea of one of the bees from this hive that had k-wings. The 2nd and 3rd photos are close ups of the mite that was found in this bee. The 4th pic is a photo I found of what tracheal mites look like taken with much better equipment. The 5th pic is of a bee with a varroa mite (red bump on her back). What I have learned in the past few days is that both varroa and tracheal mites are likely to be present in most hives. And that the bees can in part defend against mites. And while they both can kill a hive if left unchecked, they are both treatable. Unfortunatley there is no safe way to treat them until fall. I can do some things to help the bees control the varroa mites, but not really anything that I've found that I can do through the summer to help with the tracheal mites. So I will continue to monitor them and watch for signs of increased mite populations (I can see varroa and watch for signs of worsening tracheal mites). In the meantime, the first priority is to get the mysterious egg layer in this hive and get it queen right ASAP! #tennesseehoneybytiffany #savethebees #beekeeper #beekeepingisfun #newbee #obsessedwithbees #womeninbeekeeping #backyardbeekeeping #beelife #apiary at Spring Hill, Tennessee

The saga of Queen Abigail III's hive continues. Remember, I shook all the bees out on Sunday to hopefully get rid of the laying workers. When I checked on her hive tonight, I first needed to be sure there were no new eggs in there. Eggs hatch into larvae after 3 days and since there should have been no eggs laid after Sunday just after lunch time meaning that by this evening, all eggs should have now been tiny larvae. Unfortunately, I found eggs again. Multiple eggs in some, but not all the cells that had eggs. The 1st pic is a queen cup (found several) cut open with 5 eggs in it. 2nd pic - some eggs laid on top of pollen. 3rd pic you see 2 larvae in same cell. None of this is good news. It appears that there are either still laying workers or possibly Queen Abigail II still in residence. If this is the work of a laying worker this disproves that laying workers are young bees who can't find their way back to the hive. If (and it's definitely possible) it's really Queen Abigail II, that means that she's a sneaky little thing and she still hasn't found her groove yet, because that is some messed up brood she is laying. So at this point this hive is a challenge and best learning experience so I'm going to continue to try to figure it out. They are doomed for sure if I don't, so I may as well try to save the bees if I can! Next step, shake all the bees again through a queen excluder. This will tell me for sure if there is a queen present. Until then Queen Abigail III will remain in her cage for her own safety. Besides, I can't tell for sure if the bees like her yet or not. See video. And with someone else laying eggs, she would be killed if I let her out now. Stay tuned! #tennesseehoneybytiffany #savethebees #beekeeper #beekeepingisfun #newbee #obsessedwithbees #womeninbeekeeping #backyardbeekeeping #beelife #apiary at Spring Hill, Tennessee

@geocono

First hive check undertaken! With mixed results....! Good news: ✅ the bees are still there! ✅ they are super docile ✅ eggs and pupae spotted which means most importantly of all we have a queen 👸🏼 who is laying eggs Bad news! ❌the foundation wasn’t put in securely and a big chunk fell out when we tried to lift a frame to check it ❌the bees are building the comb sideways across the frames - which ultimately won’t work for us and we need to change. So in summary! Not great about the hive but I am so happy we have a queen who appears to be laying successfully. Lucky we also have advice from @grebereric who has given us a solution to our wonky frames problem!!

Last week’s visit with our volunteer and mentee Gaby. In this visit alone we merged two hives (one was queenless and numbers were dwindling), and upon checking another hive we heard a queen piping. This is a high pitched “battle cry” that a queen will make when there is a second queen present in the hive. It lets the workers (and the other queen) know that she’s ready to fight to the death. Only one queen may remain! . . . . . . #beekeeping #southfloridabeekeeping #PublicHivesnotchives #savethebees #PublicHives #Honeybees #beekeepersofinstagram #honey #bees #honeybee #miami #beesofinstagramf #k880 #880cities #miamipublicspacechallenge #publicspacechallenge #tbt #womeninbeekeeping

Bee update! I know a few of you have been asking about the bees. We were going to open the give to check on their progress, but since we have not seen as much activity as we would like, we have decided against it for now, as it would cause much disturbance to a small beginning hive. . . Our hive was started in late summer/autumn, which has not given the bees much time to gather food stores for winter. As such we have decided to supplement their fed with sugar water, as you can see with the jar attached. Hopefully they will take to it and ideally we will see them going through one of these jars a day. However there is a risk the bees can became lazy and reliant on being regularly fed, but this shouldn't happen. There is also concern about keeping the hive warm enough throughout winter, since it is a small colony 5000-6000 bees. . . So we will see how they do on the sugar water and I'll keep you updated! Pray our little colony makes it through their first winter! This is a time when lots of beginners can lose their first hives. . . . . . . #hymenoptera #conservation #womeninbeekeeping #beekeepingaustralia #beekeepingadventures #beekeeping #beekeepinglife #bees #beesofinstagram #savethebees #entomology #naturephotography #apiology #apiarist #natureisamazing #naturelovers #nature #environmentalconservation #hive #pollen #honey at The Joinery

And so this also happened today! I got another hive! I had quickly gotten used to the idea of having 3 hives when my small hive swarmed so when I decided to recombine it with the hive it swarmed from, I felt a little sad that I was going to be back to 2 hives and honestly a little worried about their chances of success overcoming the laying worker situation. So when I unexpectedly had the opportunity to buy a new nuc today from @windy_hill_apiary I just couldn't help myself! I am so happy to introduce you all to Queen Eleanor! She is beautiful and marked with a red dot for 2018. She is my first marked queen. There are many good reasons for marking your queens, but I'm afraid it will make playing 'Find the Queen' a little less fun. Isn't she pretty?! Eleanor was my grandma's first name (although she never used her first name, I have always loved it). I think she would be proud of my endeavors in beekeeping. This hive is for you, grandma! Help me watch over them! @tennessee.honey.tiffany

So today was the day that I combined the small swarm with the hive it originally swarmed from since both mysteriously became queenless and had laying workers. Neither had enough bees to recover from their peril so I attempted to combine them by shaking both boxes empty of bees and giving them a new caged queen. Being a newbee, this was quite the experience! After shaking out all the bees 100'+ away,, upon returning to the hive stand ro replace their box for them to return to, I saw what you see in the 1st pic and thought - OMG! Is my big hive swarming!? After my freakout moment and panicked text to my nearby mentor, I realized that it was all the bees I had just shaken out trying to come home, but there wasn't anything there! Oops! So as soon as I set their box back in place, they came rushing back - especially when I took their new queen out and set her down on top of the frames - you can see in the 2nd pic. The video is their initial reaction to her - see the one bee with its butt in the air- she is telling everyone that the queen is there - I'm hoping they like their new queen, Queen Abigail III. I know I technically should name her something different, but I don't want to, so I'm not going to. I like Queen Abigail III, after the Patron Saint of Bees because these bees need a saint! I will check on her tomorrow to see if the bees are being nice to her. It may take them several days to accept her. All hail the queen! #tennesseehoneybytiffany #savethebees #beekeeper #beekeepingisfun #newbee #obsessedwithbees #womeninbeekeeping #backyardbeekeeping #beelife #apiary at Spring Hill, Tennessee

We have a laying queen! 🎉 Have we found her? Well, no. But we know she’s there because we found her small bee children (see them in the comb?)! For a hive to successfully requeen, the worker bees need to make a queen cell and feed the princess a special food called royal jelly to produce a queen, the queen needs to hatch, destroy the other queen cells, be accepted by the hive, go on her mating flight (in true amazing bee fashion, bees mate in the air!), and begin laying. And It all needs to happen quickly and successfully or you could lose a whole hive. Safe to say, we’re glad to have her! { #bees #bienen #abejas #beekeeping #brood #savethebees #pollinators #apiculture #missouribees #honeybees #backyardbeekeeping #womenbeekeepers #womeninbeekeeping #beekeepersofinstagram #GodsavetheQueen }
