This is empty drone comb from the Orchard Hive. Typically the worker bees will begin filling the drone comb with nectar in the late summer since they stop raising drones at that point to get ready for winter. However the Orchard Hive hasn’t been very good about filling any of their comb with nectar or with sugar syrup. They now have solid food in their hive to try to help keep them fed during the winter. #TopBarHives #TopBarBeekeeping #MelissasHoneybees #WomenInBeekeeping #Honeybees #Pollinators #SaveTheBees #BeekeepersLife #Beekeeper #BeesOfInstagram #BeekeepersOfInstagram

Missing the calming hum of complexity from the ladies. This was after I had tested Varrora levels in the hive with what is called a sugar shake. After testing, the powdered sugar covered bees are poured back into the hive and naturally become the most popular bees in the colony.

Day 9/30: Good neighbors. Did you know sheep and bees get along well? Sheep have a more gentle nature than other livestock and don’t typically tip hives. They also keep the grass “mowed” for the beekeepers while not disturbing the bees. What a great relationship! This picture is of our hive host’s bees and sheep. We love @huddyhome and what sweet neighbors they have been to us and some of our bees. Thank you!! 🐝💗🐑 #monthofgratitude

I wish I could describe the energy this Firebush gives off in my yard. It sounds crazy but this little section of the yard is always full of life. Hundreds of bees, butterflies, and moths at all times. Lizards waiting for an easy meal between the flowers. And then of course the crazy ass hummingbirds that spend the winter here. They’re camera shy so without a long lens I won’t capture them well but they love to curiously buzz around me while I’m focused on bees and butterflies. Yesterday I had a really bad day, probably one of the worst in a while so today waking up and standing beneath the Firebush was definitely needed. There’s a reason I got this flower tattooed. This tree means so much to me. Plant it, let it grow wild in a corner of your yard, and you’ll probably understand. 🧡 #tashaadventures at Miami, Florida

“How do you light a smoker?” —-all too often bee keepers don’t know how to properly light a smoker and they either can’t keep it lit, or they have a smoker carrying all-together too much heat! • Here’s the best tips and tricks for how to light a smoker and be sure it’ll stay light through a full apiary inspection.💯 • 1. Have a slow burning fuel source. Burlap or cedar wood chips work great for this. (Cedar wood chips smell great too)🤓 2. Fill your smoker about a third of the way 👍🏽 3. Have a long stemmed lighter to easily light the wood or burlap on fire. (If you forget a long lighter you can tear a piece of paper and light that then drop it in the smoker)💥 4. Begin to stoke the bellows of the smoker. Get a good fire going that is evenly distributed around the entire area of the cylinder. 👌🏼👌🏼 5. Once you’ve got a good flame going give it a few big puffs and then begin to add more wood chips in the smoker.🐝 6. Continue stoking the fire (take the time to get it good and strong) 🔥🔥 7. Add your last set of wood chips to the smoker. ✔️ 8. Continue to stoke the smoker and place your hand over the smoker. If the smoke is a yellow color and hot, you’ve got your fire too strong. If you pump that smoke into the hive you can singe the wings off the bees.❌ 9. Once your smoke is a cool white you can place the top on the smoker and get to work!! 👩🏼‍🌾 . . . #beekeeping #honeybees #smoke #photography #blackandwhitephotography #biomimicry #apismellifera #apiculture #urbanbeekeeping #didyouknow #stem #womeninbeekeeping #womeninagriculture #agritourism #neature #naturephotography #beehive #beekeeperlife #beekeepersofinstagram #beauty #loveyourjob #funfacts #instagood at Atlanta, Georgia

✨ •T H A N K F U L• ✨ So much has happened these last few weeks that it’s been difficult to slow down and settle on where I am. For starters — I’m a part time manager alongside a group of women who inspire and motivate me every freaking week. I also freelance in social media work because I love doing it for small businesses and people who truly deserve the best in my community. To add onto that, I now own my own business @crateofbees . The hustle is real, so so real. But it’s bigger than me, and worth every freaking moment. • I cannot begin to explain how nervous, excited, anxious, exhilarating, exhausting! it is knowing I have something that is mine. The months, weeks, days, even minutes crawling up to the moment I would share more of my passion publicly, could not have even been bearable if it wasn’t for those who supported me along the way. Giving back to my community has always been apart of my soul. When my father who raised me on Arbor Days, and Garden Clubs, would show me the beauty of nature preservation of my community in South Florida. When my best friend (now husband) asked me to work alongside him putting on events six years ago as part of Subculture. When I was privileged to work alongside countless creatives in Chicago, who have moved me to my core and made me a stronger, more ambitious person. • I really haven’t taken the time to share how breathtaking it’s been to have all these memories, this support until now. It’s been hard (it still is) to find the words to say how thankful I am, but I’ve been moved everyday since the launch, and I’m so excited to be moving forward because of you all. Special, special thanks to @martine_colette, who opened her space, heart, and allowed me to be apart of her event amazing #HouseOfHoney. She worked so freaking hard that whole month and I’m so proud. @pnewb , who graciously volunteered to work alongside me that night, when really I was the one working alongside her. Another big thank you to @dickvergez who worked with me when my head was all over the place on designing my logo, and brand. (Continued in comments) at FATVillage Arts District

Honey History. The history of honey appears to date back 8000 years to Valencia, Spain where a cave painting depicts humans foraging for honey from a hive. 🐝WINTERING BEES🐝 many of you have asked me... what happens to the bees now that it’s cold outside? I do everything that I can do to try help them make it through the winter. I put them down on the ground on a piece of insulation, insulated them with “bee cozies”, added mouse guards to all entrances and now we wait until spring. There are many reasons why honey bees might not make it to the spring, but with all this preparation and some positivity, I really hope they will. Bees will exit their hive during the winter time to go to the bathroom and to remove any hive members that did not make it. However, they will mostly be spending their time inside in a cluster, trying to keep warm and eating their honey that they produced all summer long✨ at Saint Albert, Alberta

Here's a clip from this year's #hive being #wrapped. We started the summer with two hives but ended it with one when we discovered far too late that our stronger hive had gone queenless. We end up wrapping the #bees slightly differently each year and this year the big change was not sealing the vapour barrier paper at the top of the hive to allow for more moisture to escape. - Music provided by the talented Miranda Mark!
