We all know sleep is integral to our health & well being, but did you know that women need MORE sleep than men? Yup. It's true ladies.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ . ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Sleep needs change as we change. Hands up if you were a teenager who had to be dragged out of bed at noon? (Guilty). Chances are, if you are reading this? You are more likely to be in the category of waking daily at sunrise by a toddler demanding breakfast.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ . ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Typically, most adults need between 7 to 9 hours of sleep & a recent study in England found that women may need 20 to 30 minutes MORE sleep than men to be healthy.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ . ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ According to this study, the major reason women need more sleep is because women are more likely to be multitaskers than their male counterpart. Multitasking requires more of your brain. Whether she is stay at home mum, a professional powerhouse or both - multitasking is just plain mentally exhausting.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ . ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ On top of that motherhood not surprisingly, also plays a big role in sleep (or lack there of). Not only does the daily multi-tasking require more time & brainpower, but even when a woman IS sleeping, she may not sleep as deeply. Mother’s minds are super sensitive to the sound of their child from babyhood onwards, which explains why we wake at the slightest stir — yet a man sleeps right on through it.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ . ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ And lastly, there are other biological differences that affect the amount of quality sleep women get. During the last week or so of her monthly cycle, there is a surge in the hormone progesterone. More progesterone requires additional energy from the body and that extra energy output means more sleep is required to replenish energy levels. Gosh, all.the.things.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ . ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ So. The take-aways? So you go to the doctor and tell them that you are tired, your hair is falling out, you are gaining weight and you are constipated. They run a “thyroid” panel and call you a week later to say that your test came back normal. So what gives? 🤦‍♀️ - The first thing that I would ask your doctor is what they exactly tested on the blood draw? Unfortunately many doctors ONLY test TSH. There’s so much more than just TSH when it comes to thyroid health! 🤷‍♀️ ‍- First of all, if you have symptoms like cold hands and feet, fatigue, constipation, indigestion, hair loss, weight gain or inability to lose weight, eyebrow thinning, or depression or mood issues then you must dig deeper! There’s a reason you are having these symptoms!!! And YOU are the only one that knows your body best! If this is you yet your doctor says your blood tests are “normal”.....don’t stop!!! Do not take “your blood work is normal” as an answer if you have symptoms. 🙋‍♀️ - Second of all, do you know if your doctor even ran a full thyroid panel? TSH alone is NOT enough to figure out if the thyroid is functioning optimally. Here are my recommendations for a full Thyroid test: ‍ ✅TSH ✅Free T4 ✅Free T3 ✅Reverse T3 ✅Thyroid antibodies ‍ Just because TSH looks normal doesn’t mean that the other thyroid markers are normal too. So you must check ALL of the markers. You are missing SO MUCH information that is necessary to fully assess thyroid health. 🤔 - So what else can you do? I always include my fav test called the HTMA (hair tissue mineral analysis) for assessing thyroid health as well. This, in conjunction with a full thyroid panel, are great tests for determining thyroid health. 🤗 - Need some help or have questions? When I first thought of slowing down, surrendering & softening I was scared shitless. If I stopped what would I DO!? Who would I become? Because if I wasn’t productive, where would my value lie? ⠀ ⠀ When I softened. When I surrendered. When I found myself on a ‘dark night of the soul’ kinda journey, needing to slow the fuck down on ALL areas of my life - including my movement. I became scared of the movement & the momentum. What if I started again, and couldn’t ‘keep it balanced’. felt like I would be mistaken. ⠀ ⠀ When I found the balance between the two (never equal parts of both, but simply tuning into what is needed at any given time) I was scared that if I was talking about the stillness & the softness, but I was movin my ass 🏃‍♀️🤸‍♀️ 🏋️‍♀️ then I would be misunderstood. Because you can’t say one thing, and DO another. ⠀ ⠀ But now that my two worlds have finally blended together. Now that I feel at home, and confident in where I stand. I know that both can be true for me. That I need the movement & the stillness just as much as each other - but never equal to one another. ⠀ ⠀ The entire time, my body has been my guide. Showing me the right direction. When to move. When to be still. And not so ironically, now that I have found my inner strength; I finally feel like I have moved from #postpartumrecovery to actually building strength. Its kind of difficult to explain, but I sense you will understand. ⠀ ⠀ Keep listening. ⠀ Keep trusting. ⠀ Keep learning. ⠀ There is no end point. ⠀ So just keep on.

I was recently working with a gorgeous mummy who was pregnant with her third baby. Life was busy and she was finding it hard to fit in the 3 showers a day that she felt she needed. Why did she need to shower 3 times a day? She was leaking urine with coughing, sneezing, laughing or sometimes on the way to the toilet. This mummy felt so embarrassed by her leaking that she was finding the time and energy to shower 3 times a day! The first time I saw her we talked about her pelvic floor and went through a basic daily practice and a few hints and tips to help her manage her bladder. The next time I saw her was about a month later, and this beautiful mummy had worked hard doing her exercises and was now having hardly any leaking through the day and just showering the once!! She also reported that her pelvic girdle pain was reduced and was able to make her pain less by doing her pelvic floor exercises. The two of us were so happy with her progress and she was relieved something so simple could help her so much.
