DAMN it's taken me so LONG to feel relatively good in my diabetic body. Diagnosed at 20 years old, I had a very stable physique having stopped growing in grade 10. 59-63 kgs on average, fluctuating up and down with the seasons of life. After dropping down to a VERY unhealthy 53 kgs📉 just before diagnosis I gained weight back and felt healthier🍎 and happier than ever. But it didn't stop⬆️⬆️⬆️. I kept gaining and gaining, ironically watching my diet more carefully and exercising more religiously than ever before. I had to giveaway my WHOLE wardrobe. All the pants and shorts I loved wouldn't even get over my knees. I gained weight but my body composition stayed the same from my pre-diabetic body 21% body fat to post-diabetic, 15++ kgs heavier, 21% body fat. I gained fat but I gained muscle too. Insulin is a anabolic hormone. IT BUILDS & STORES. The psychological impact that living with Type One has had- YOH, it has been immense. HUGE. Challenging to my self-image and confidence as a woman, with bruises on my body from insulin shots, from weight that was never there before, from the challenges of gaining quickly and losing slowly, from never feeling full, from having to eat when my sugar is low and I am not hungry and in general- type one has been challenging to my psychological relationship with food. IT HAS BEEN WILD. It still is 😂 But it's a journey, I am not 100% there yet but have grown huge amounts in accepting my body as it is NOW. Don't wait to love your body until it looks a certain way or does a certain thing. NO. Love it RIGHT NOW. I have grown into a better place. Maybe it's the self-love movements that grip Instagram. Maybe it's seeing a variety of bodies in Social Media. Maybe it's because I am 6 years older and growing into myself more and more each day. But I know when my actions stem from self-love, I see positive changes in my body and health. When my actions come from despising my body, I fail, I fall off track, I stunt positive growth. SO Love your body. Love your scar tissue from injections. Love your bruises. Love your tummy. Love your rough fingertips. LOVE UNCONDITIONALLY AND CONSISTENTLY AND THE REST WILL FALL INTO PLACE.
