I finally finished the WIP that I was writing for #nanowrimo2019 It's exactly 54,900 words. I have to say that this first draft is the first first draft that I have ever really felt like I can start editing without having to rewrite the whole damn thing again. The story is solid enough that I don't have to really worry about too many plot holes. My characters could use a bit more development, but they're already pretty well formed. I'm proud of myself. I can actually see myself publishing this one and that is a first as well. Do you read micro/flash fiction. What's you favorite flash fiction story? Micro/flash fction is a very interesting medium of writing. I've started dabbling in it this year and I really enjoy how little commitment is required for them. I also love how minimalistic you have to be with them. You can only go into detail about a single moment. I've written several now, generally for my little brother and sister's entertainment, but the subjext matter has ranged greatly in each story, from a dark comedy about a Leprechaun's pot of gold, to a twisty tale about talking caribou, to a funny adventure about a little girl who wants to learn kung-fu. Yay! I did it! I won! I didn't think I was going to win 'cause of how behind I was, but the last week or so I got to work. I even wrote almost 7,000 words today just to win. This was my third year doing NaNoWriMo and my second year in a row winning. Another accomplishment that came from this year's NaNoWriMo was that the last two years I participated I finished my story before I got 50,000 words. But this year I was actually able to get 50,000 words before I finished the story. It means I'm learning to slow the story down and add more detail on the first draft. For me that's a big deal. I've been a writer for as long as I can remember. It was always something I did for enjoyment, even when it came to school assignments. . But I can remember the first time that changed and writing was, for once, hard! . It was in year 12, when I decided to take the English Extension 2 class, which meant you had to create a body of original literature. . I chose to write a suite of poems on the topic of biblical femininity. I was excited about the project, I started out on fire, but soon I discovered that writing - as much as I loved it - could be really hard. . I wanted to give up when it wasn't fun anymore, but obviously I couldn't. . That year and that project was formative for me as a writer and a creative. . It taught me that creativity is not the same as sponteneity. . It taught me that producing good work means rounds and rounds of editing. . It taught me to hold my first draft with an open hand. That line I scribbled down on the school bus, that I thought was pure genius? It can be improved. . And most importantly, it taught me that I can persevere, long after the sparks of passion have died down, and write something of substance. . I can write hard things. . And I will finish this book. . (Just don't ask to see that set of poems, 'kay?)
