However , as more and more casualties began to arrive , ambulance trains took passengers to newly opened hospitals across the country . These home ambulance trains carried the injured to hospitals as far - flung as Strathpeffer in the Scottish highlands . By 1918 , the railway companies had built 20 , ambulance trains for use in Britain and 31 for the continent . November 1914 : departure of the Liverpool Scottish Regiment for the front from Royal Tunbridge Wells . The Pantiles , London Road , Tunbridge Wells , Kent . The Liverpool Scottish was a Territorial Force infantry battalion [ 10th ( Scottish ) Battalion , The King ' s ( Liverpool Regiment ) T . F ) . They were one of the first infantry battalions of the Territorial Force to join the British Expeditionary Force . They were ' called up ' for war service in August 1914 . In October the battalion was billeted at Tunbridge Wells . They sailed to France from Southampton aboard the SS Maidan on 1st November 1914 , about three months after the outbreak of the First World War . The Liverpool Scottish went into the trenches for the first time on 27th November 1914 . At the end of November 1914 , they were 26 officers and 829 other ranks strong .
