Something I’m learning as I get older ~ I don’t need to be the best at all the things. I don’t have to be able to do all the things. Do I believe that I CAN learn how to do all the things, how to execute them and become great at them?! Absolutely! But nobody is born perfect. Some people are born naturally talented and they seem to pick up very sport with ease. They learn quickly and memorize easily. “The Golden Child”. That was not me. Most of the time, I’m not naturally gifted and I have to work my ASS off when it comes to physical feats. For example: these single leg deads. I’ve been training on and off since I was 15, seriously since I was 19. I’ve been certified as a personal trainer for almost 4 years. I’ve NEVER done these before. 🤯 I know. 🤯 I think they’re a fantastic way to improve imbalances, target hams + glutes, get some extra core engagement, improve balance ... etc. I just never did them, and decided today I would try. I tried with a 12kg kettlebell at first and barely scraped out a set of 5, my foot kept touching the ground for balance. So I ditched my ego and grabbed a 10 lbs Db, focused on keeping my core tight and hips level, and did a few sets. It was humbling and a little bit baffling once I thought about why I’d never done these before 💭 Fear. That’s it. Fear. My balance is a weakness, and I knew I’d struggle. I was fearful of people judging me, watching me, not knowing how to correctly perform them & activate my muscles. I let my brain go crazy with how “scary” these were and I never tried them. 🙄🙄🙄lol. So, yeah. I did them and realized I was being ridiculous and that fear is a liar(something I already knew, just needed a reminder), and I wasn’t great clearly - but that’s ok. I will improve, and you will too. Pick something you’re too scared to do or an exercise that intimidates you and go attempt it!!! Race season is here! Whether you're a recreational runner (like me) who's only doing 1, to a few races over the summer, or super competitive and are doing several, what I'm about to talk about will help you in your training. The 80/20 principle. What does this mean? This means that approximately 80% of the results from training will come from 20% of the training you do. The best runners spend the majority of their time training doing long duration and moderate intensity training that is below race pace. The goal is to increase their aerobic capacity. If you don't know what that means, that's fine, but I'm sure you've heard the term VO2Max. This, essentially, is their aerboic capacit6. The absolute maximum ability of their body to consume and use oxygen. That's the 80%, now let's talk about the vital 20%. This is going to come from high intensity training. This can be in the form of HIIT, long intervals, tempo runs, hills and fartlek training. These types of running are done less often but yield huge results on your overall performance by increasing your anaerobic threshold, or sometimes referred to as your lactate threshold. This is the % of your aerobic capacity that you can maintain before too much lactate and metabolic waste accumulates in your muscles causing you to have to slow down. By doing higher intensity work but less often, you increase your lactate threshold meaning you can run faster for longer, and get closer to operating at your aerobic capacity. What should you do? If you do 4 runs per week to train for your run (hopefully more than just a few weeks before your race), then do 3 runs at a moderate intensity for a long duration (usually as long or longer than your race) and do 1 high intensity short duration session. This will, without being overly structured like a professional runner, give you the best results and have you crushing personal bests come race day. Comment which races youre doing this summer, and then tag a friend who you're running with (or is running one), so you and them can be prepared and crush it! I'm doing the @lululemon 10k in July. It was a fantastic event last year and I'm so excited to be doing it again! at Edmonton, Alberta

Try this at the end of your next workout for a burnout! 10s alternating, 10s double slam, 10s side to side. Then repeat but only 5s of each, then sled push, then bear crawl 50ft focusing on form and breathing! - Going to start incorporating little high intensity circuits at the end of all my workout no matter what I'm training that day as doing this builds up lactic acid which splits up into lactate and hydrogen. An excess of hydrogen in the body triggers the release of growth hormone and that triggers testosterone release. Sunday appears to be my new Monday for tracking gym progress while recovering from surgery to repair a ruptured tricep in April. Range of motion continues to increase a little more each day. Still not pushing too heavy on any particular exercise and being extra cautious with the right arm. Weight today was at 230lbs. More importantly, I’ve had to loosen the belt a couple of notches which is not cool. Shirts, including the one in the pics, is a little tighter in the mid-section, also not cool. If you’re putting your physical health ahead of your mental and spiritual health you need to reevaluate. Take it from someone who has been working out consistently since June 28th 2013, and put the gym before literally everything else for the bulk of that timeframe. At one point lifting was the only thing that brought me joy, so I gave it all my time, and it gave me life... until suddenly it didn’t. I had reached a point where I felt I had put in all this effort but had very little to show for it. Eventually I found myself being pulled to the depths of a deep and dark clinical depression with generalized anxiety and physiological symptoms. I had neglected my mental and spiritual health for my physical health for far too long. . And in all honesty, being the prideful psych major I was - I ignored it. I ignored all the signs for over a year. I told myself I could handle it. Spoiler alert: I couldn’t lol. And eventually I did something I thought I’d never do, and turned to SSRI’s (antidepressants) in order to pull my mind out of the loop of despair it had gotten stuck in. It took about a month or so for me to genuinely feel like I could live without needing to hold back tears all day, and in all honesty I attribute that decision to apart of why I’m still here today. Ever since then and since I competed last year, I have heavily re-evaluated my willingness to put physical fitness before everything. You’ll see me lifting a little less, and living a little more. The passion’s still there, but now I don’t view days off as ‘sacrilegious’ and instead see them as freeing ‘opportunities’ to nurture my mental and spiritual health too.
