You may not know this about me but it’s taken me a LONG time to feel good even just OK in my own skin. And I don’t just mean my weight or the way I look but who I am. I’ve struggled with so many things before. Self image has been one of the biggest things... having always wanted to be an actor and many times being judged more for the way you look than your talent but also let’s face it just being a teenager does that to you. I was never the popular kid, I got good grades, wasn’t allowed out too late and despite my many attempts just never quite fitted in 😅. The my whole identity piece, I’m from 🇲🇽 but grew up in the 🇺🇸 and went to an international school when we moved back. This allowed me to see the world differently and more open. However it was also hard because I wasn’t really from here nor there as a cultural identity. Then to top it of, us humans love labels. Why? Who knows!!! But this hasn’t made it easier as I am a proud member of the LGBT 🏳️‍🌈 community. I haven’t always been out and proud, and dealing with all of this in a mainly catholic traditional country was HARD. Also the whole label thing and heteronormative cultures feels like you have to come out all the time and you can imagine my journey once I fell in ❤️ w a boy after years and years of auto labelling myself as an “L”. I don’t describe myself as any other letter so people get really confused when they hear I’m w a man... 🤷🏻‍♀️ I personally think life would be easier if we just didn’t label. So it has taken me a while to be me, as I am, to the world and understand that those who are really meant to be part of your life will take you as you are and not question the rest and love you just the same.

Whatever mental illness you suffer with, it’s OKAY! You are worthy and more than what it makes you feel it does. I’ve been battling with depression, anxiety, I was diagnosed with PTSD a few months ago and may have other disorders- but I don’t let that define who I am or want to aspire to be. Your past doesn’t map out your future. YOU are in control of the future! It can be a lot better and more hopeful than you think. Especially after I sought out mental health counseling. That has completely changed my mindset and has helped me process many things in ways I never had before. If you’re struggling- you’re not alone! Two years ago at this time I tried to get off my medication. : : I’ve been on anti-depressant/anxiety medication since I was 18 years old. I’ve tried twice in my life to get off my meds with very little success. : : Part of my medications use is to help “tame” my obsessive compulsive tendencies. My obsessive behaviours usually show up when I feel like I’m losing control of something in my life. Exercise & food was always something I could control & master. : : Even though my medication has not so fun side effects such as fatigue, weight gain low libido, & long term liver effects, there is nothing worse than the feeling of overwhelming anxiety & a sense of a loss of self. : : I have come to terms with the fact that I will likely be on this medication for the rest of my life & l’m okay with that. This doesn’t define who I am as a person & what I have to offer. In fact i consider it part of my #selfcare. It enables me to move through life with less anxiety & more clarity. : : If you are someone who struggles with mental health I see YOU, I hear YOU & I feel YOU. Ja. I know it doesn't vanquish the darkness that comes with my recurring bouts with depression; but for a moment, as brief as it may be, it serves to bring a glimmer of light and the illumination of joy that can be experienced and is in fact associated with living. When was the last time you just sat still? Have you ever been able to be still? Right now are you thinking "I've never been able to sit still or stand still"? Well it's never too late to learn a new skill, to practice being still. In this day and age I often find people are always on the go, which I find ironic because we have so much technology that is supposed to make our lives easier so that we have more time to enjoy our families and friends. But I often hear the opposite, "I'm so busy", " I have no time". So I really think that we need to start start practicing just being still. Right now, wherever you are, take a moment, sit and be still. Take a few deep breaths. Let the thoughts you are having come and go, they don't matter at this time. There are no problems to solve in this moment. -Tell yourself that it is good to be still. -Tell your mind that it is good to be still. -Tell your soul that it is good to be still. How did it feel? And then you know you’re winning! I have Asperger’s syndrome and that means I’m sometimes a bit different from the norm. And - given the right circumstances - being different is a superpower. I'm not public about my diagnosis to "hide" behind it, but because I know many ignorant people still see it as an "illness", or something negative. And believe me, my diagnosis has limited me before. Before I started school striking I had no energy, no friends and I didn’t speak to anyone. I just sat alone at home, with an eating disorder. Self-esteem is the view and opinion we have of ourselves and often times we are our own worst critic. But our self-esteem is worsened when we fear what others will think of us and/or how they will judge us. When you see the word Mindfulness what do you think of? -Do you think of meditation? -Do you think you have to clear your mind of every thought? -Do you think "ain't nobody got time for that". + Well I can tell you with certainty that mindfulness is not the same as meditation. Meditation is where one focuses to increase calmness, concentration, and emotional balance. Mindfulness is about mental awareness of your thoughts, feelings, behaviors, movements and how they affect you, your body, and those around you. + If you needed a clear mind in order to practice mindfulness then no one would be able to practice it, because let's face it, who in the world has a clear mind? And mindfulness doesn't take a lot of time, just a few minutes a day can bring you into awareness, and consciousness of your thoughts, actions, and what you can do to change/improve them if that is what you need to work on. You can practice Mindfulness in the shower, in the car, even at your work desk. + Example: It's morning, I'm standing at the sink brushing my teeth. I start thinking about work and my assignments for the day. I realize I'm already thinking about work, yet I'm not there. I don't judge myself for thinking about work. I just bring my thoughts back to brushing my teeth, how I'm standing at the sink, my posture, how the toothbrush is touching every tooth...I make a conscious decision to be in the moment, to focus on the moment and how what I am doing is affecting my body in a positive way. + After reading about Mindfulness now, has your opinion changed on it? Do you think that Mindfulness is something you can practice? I am feeling an immense amount of gratitude for having been able to experience this weekend! ✨⁣ ⁣ I was surrounded by the best of the best, got to attend a council talk that consisted of over 250 years of chiropractic, danced a little along the way, drank all the coffee, and gained so many juicy bits of knowledge throughout. ⁣☀️ ⁣ But the one thing that truly resonated with me throughout the entire weekend was that we need to band together- as chiropractors, chiro students, CAs, and any advocates for chiropractic. We need to TAKE MAJOR ACTION. We need to speak up, educate ourselves as much as possible and use our voice to spread the good word of chiropractic. It’s not about a technique you use, how you run your office, where you practice- this is about the people we are serving, the people who NEED US. ⁣🌎 ⁣ The world is suffering. And it’s not going to get any better if we don’t start to take a stand for health. We as chiropractors, have a true gift that we have AN OBLIGATION to give to people. ⁣ ⁣ Every single person I interacted with this weekend is up to something, something good.
