This book is fantastic. It’s an excellent approach to start teaching kids the importance of winning and losing. It drives home the point that your real competition is with yourself. This isn’t about pushing your kids to win in an unhealthy manner— it’s about looking for the positives in all wins and loses. I know some of the greatest lessons learned in my life have come from failures (defeats). I can’t think of one successful person that we work with whom didn’t have to overcome adversity. Removal of adversity is a mistake. Too many people fail to realize that there are many valuable lessons learned when you don’t win. If you are a parent like myself trying to communicate this point to your kids and are struggling for the right words check this book out on @amazon I saw a insta story @andyfrisella did about the book and I instantly ordered it. #1stphorm @1stphorm #usaw #usaweightlifting #sports #wordswin #usagymnastics #usatf #usawrestling #youthsports

When you see your son take a huge hit in ice hockey, tossing him up against the glass, the initial reaction is always one of huge shock. When you yell to the ref, “check his head” and are continually ignored, it turns to anger.. when you run around frantically attempting to get the coaches to do one simple thing, which is check for head injury, and they do nothing.. outrage! Having to pull my son off the ice, then confront coaches about why they didn’t at least ask him if he hit his head was frustrating. It also doesn’t make me a “you know what” for being an advocate for my son. The disregard one of the coaches’ showed myself and my son along with his pompous attitude towards me for legitimately being concerned about my son is alarming. As parents, we need to ensure coaches watch for potential head injuries, even asking the simplest question of “Did you hit your head”. Thankfully Gerrick is cleared by the doctor and everything is okay. It’s hard being the “bad guy”, but I will always do what is wrong for my son, even if that makes me unpopular. #hockey #icehockey #sports #concussion #youthsports Had the ref. not yelled at me multiple times after I yelled “Check his head, please check his head”, then this would have been a non-issue.

Yesterday I hosted a group of young men from Aaron’s Boys Home at the gym. I got to talk with them, teach them some exercises/basic training methods, and put them through a workout. They far exceeded my expectations in terms of effort, attitude, and left a huge mark on my day. I’ve been coaching kids of all ages for many years now and as much as I am able to teach them, they often times teach me just as much about myself and about people in general. Some of these kids have been brought up under the worst circumstances, with no one to show them how to act, and all the odds stacked against them. Most people will take one look at them, judge them and assume that they are troublemakers and are only destined to fail. When people come in my gym, I treat them all the same. I try to let them know immediately that all I care about is helping them get better in some way. When these boys walked in the gym this morning, one of them had his head phones on and the first thing I did was tell him to take them off. Not because I wanted to show him that I made the rules here, but because I wanted them to know that I was here to interact with them and get to know them. I told him since he had music playing already that he might as well plug into the sound system and be the DJ. Mission accomplished. His guard was down, and he was happy to play his favorite “hype” songs for the group and no one seemed to object. In a world consumed by technology, where more time is spent staring at a screen than interacting with other humans, we tend to forget the value of human interaction. I’ve come to find that the majority of the kids I come across are not asked to do much, they are not expected to DO MORE. We let them sit back and hide behind their iPad, or ignore the person trying to talk to them until they finish their last text message. We let them settle for just doing what they think is enough. Today the young man in this photo did more than expected. I didn’t do anything to motivate him, I didn’t have to ask him to try hard, and I didn’t offer him any reward for getting on that bike and working his ass off for 3-minutes. I think he did it simply because he knew that I cared. at The Lab
