Enjoyed wonderful hospitality at the Arbour Birth Center today as they showed a group of @calgarydoulas members around. Many warm memories came flooding back of my own birth over 9 years ago in the Iris room. Pictured is the more popular Rose room. The center is a fabulous place to birth for those under midwifery care. #maternalinstinctsdoula #arbourbirthcenter #calgarysbirthcenter

Pretty in pink! 💖💁🏻‍♀️ • • I have not always loved pink. In fact, I hated it, but when I was pregnant with my little girl something happened... Now it’s an obsession, I always end up buying everything in pink 🙄 more specifically dust pink. • • Did something like this happened to you while pregnant?🤰🏻👀 • • #yycmama #yycbaby #yycpregnancy #yycpink #yycballoons #yycdecor #yycballoondecor #yycballoons #calgaryballoons #airdrieballoons #yycgirls #yycevents #yyclife #yycbirthdayparty #yycwomen #yycfashion #yycdowntown

Look at that cute baby bump!! 🤰 . Pregnancy is one of the most special and meaningful times in our lives, and it goes by in a flash! It will be such a special moment when this mama will be able to show her maternity pictures to her son when he was in her tummy. . If you are hesitant to take maternity photos because of feeling self-conscious or just plain tired or uncomfortable, that totally understandable. However, I would encourage you to think how special these photos will become to you after a few years and even decades. WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY: one of the reason I started @postpartumqueen care kits was because even though I was super obsessed with the physical symptoms of Postpartum and how to heal faster, I never once looked into the mental side. Until I had to, why? Because I am 1 in 10, I had PPD. So part of our @postpartumqueen are resources of where to reach out for help and real stories in our @postpartumqueen survival guide and one of them is my own. Here’s a little of my own story about PPD: . . There were so many tears. But then those tears just kept coming. Every day, about everything. I turned into a blurry, teary-eyed, incoherent mess. What was happening to me? I remember looking up the symptoms, scouring the blogs, the message boards and seeing it over and over again. Woman who had the same feelings, the same thoughts, the same stories. Postpartum Depression (PPD). ‘But there’s no way I could have that!’ I thought to myself. I had that same unconditional feeling of love for my new baby as I did with the first. I couldn’t believe I had two perfect little beings in my life. But then there was the sadness, the anger, the anxiety, the rage and the feeling of needing to escape. How could this be? I had always believed that women who got PPD were ones that suffered from depression before having babies. They were the ones that didn’t love their babies. The ones that thought about suicide. I didn’t have any of those thoughts. But there was just so much darkness and it was becoming overwhelming.

How To Navigate Your Pregnancy After Loss - guest blog post by Aditi Loveridge, @pregnancylosshealing ‍ "Pregnancy after previous loss (miscarriage, stillbirth, neonatal loss) is a complex time. For the pregnant person it is a time of joy but it can also be filled with intense fear, anxiety, worry, and isolation. It is a time where the external world meets your pregnancy in celebration but doesn’t always make space to hold the other emotions that come along with it. Society’s lack of acknowledgement can make you feel like you are alone, that maybe something is wrong with you for not being 100% excited, joyful, or connected to your pregnancy. ‍ As someone who has personally experienced pregnancy after loss and professionally coaches people through this experience, I am here to tell you that it is completely normal to experience all the emotions in a pregnancy after loss. ‍ Pregnancy after loss is a complex time but here are some things that might help you navigate your way through it." ‍ READ MORE >> Link in bio ‍ #pregnancylosshealing #pregnancyafterloss #FiveElementsCommunityPartner #yyc #yycsupport #yycpregnancy #yycbirth #yycpostpartum #yycbirthdoula #yycpostpartumdoula #yycdoulas #CalgaryDoulas #unconditionalsupport #birthsupport #postpartumsupport #YouDeserveADoula #LetsDoulaThis #LoveWhatYouDoula #RiteOfPassage #initiation #yycmoms #yycdads #yycnewborns #yycparents #yyclocalresource #FiveElementsBirth

Feeling pregnant AF today. I’ve quickly gone from “I’m not ready for this baby to come...” to “I’m sooo over this...” Less than 6 weeks to go now and I’m seriously growing out of my maternity clothes 😳 Hardly any of my maternity pants fit, I’ve added bra extenders to all of my maternity bras, I can’t zip up the winter maternity coat that was lended to me unless I REALLY try and I’ve resorted to wearing my husband’s t-shirts at home just for something loose fitting! I feel like if this baby gets any bigger I’m going to burst at the seams! . . . . . #pregnantaf #34weekspregnant #8monthspregnant #expandingbelly #sooverthis #mommatobeagain #yycpregnancy #yycmomma #yycmom #yycmomstobe #momlife #yycpersonaltrainer

Choice of Birth Place - Homebirth✨ • In Canada we have the privilege of deciding where & how we birth our babies. If you have a midwife you have the option between hospital, home or birthcentre ⠀⠀ For many, a hospital seems like the automatic & safest choice. So why consider an out-of-hospital birth? ⠀⠀ Research __ Canadian research comparing the same low risk populations in over 11,000 planned homebirths with equal number of planned hospital births has shown the following benefits: • Comfort in your space • No restrictions for movement, food/drink or support people • Less chance of labour augmentation, vacuum, forceps, cesarean & episiotomy • Less chance of hemorrhage, vaginal tear & blood transfusion ⠀⠀ In 2019 the Society of Obstetricians & Gynecologists of Canada released a position statement stating that homebirth is equally as safe as hospital birth for those who are low risk & under the care of a registered midwife who is integrated into the Canadian healthcare system ⠀⠀ Ok - let’s be real for a moment. Stats are great, they help us make truly informed decisions, but how do we actually keep homebirth safe? ⠀⠀ Training __ Registered midwives in Canada train solely in pregnancy, birth, postpartum & newborn care for at least 4 years + 1 year as a mentored new registrant before being qualified to provide primary obstetrical care. We re-certify in neonatal resuscitation & fetal health surveillance yearly, emergency skills & CPR every 2 years ⠀⠀ Our role is to identify risk factors in pregnancy & labour to guide families in choosing the safest place to birth for them ⠀⠀ Equipment __ The equipment we bring is equivalent to a level 1 hospital. This includes everything to: • monitor baby’s heart rate • monitor mom’s vital signs • deliver baby • stitch a vaginal tear • start an IV • draw blood • give IV fluid or antibiotics • stop a hemorrhage • resuscitate baby or mom • & more! ⠀⠀ So how do you know which place is best for you? ⠀⠀ Ultimately it comes down to wherever you & your partner feel safest. For birth to unfold smoothly we must feel safe, supported & have the utmost confidence & trust in our birth team wherever we choose to birth! 📷 @megan_boone_doula

Choice of Birth Place - Hospital Birth ✨ • In Canada we have the privilege of deciding where & how we will birth our babies. If you are being cared for by a physician you may be able to choose which hospital in your area feels most comfortable to you - based on proximity to your home & amenities provided by the hospital. ⠀⠀ If you have a registered midwife as your primary prenatal care provider you may have the option between hospital, home or birthcentre. ________ ⠀⠀ Let’s talk options: ⠀⠀ Benefits of Hospital Birth: • Sense of security with direct access to specialists if needed • Pain relief readily available • Safest for those who are high risk, or have a history of complications in a previous pregnancy or birth ⠀⠀ Drawbacks of Hospital Birth: • Potential lack of flexibility in hospital protocols & routine procedures such as eating/drinking in labour, support people allowed, fetal monitoring • Feeling “on the clock” • Slight higher chance of interventions such as labour augmentation, vacuum, forceps, & cesarean _______ ⠀⠀ Things to consider: ⠀⠀ Most hospitals these days have beautiful birthing suites, access to tubs or showers for pain relief & lots of other amazing equipment to support normal birth. We still suggest making your hospital room as cozy as possible. Bring things like a housecoat, slippers, LED candles, an iPod & a labour playlist. Don’t be afraid to turn the lights down low, draw the blinds, move the bed. Press all the buttons (ok maybe not alllll the buttons!) It’s your space - treat it like you would your own home! ________ ⠀⠀ What did you love about your hospital birth? What cozy things did you bring?! ⠀⠀ Stay tuned for our next post about the option to choose a homebirth! ⠀⠀ Photo by @megan_boone_doula

Ever wondered how @postpartumqueen care kits got started? Check out this #minidoc that @postpartumqueen was featured in by @shopify . Full video in IGTV . . Michelle and Christine’s postpartum experiences could not have been more different. While Christine recovered within the first month after giving birth, it took Michelle almost 9-12 months to heal from labour. As friends, they shared their unique experiences with each other and realized that there weren’t many companies that supported new moms with their postpartum mental and physical journeys. So they launched Postpartum Queen, a service that delivers boxes full of essential items to new moms. Seen as a ‘survival kit for new moms’, the boxes are helping mothers and families around the world. Tag a new mom that needs to know 🙋‍♀️

Have you noticed that you sometimes get dizzy in the first trimester of your pregnancy? Or you are out of breath just from climbing a flight of stairs or chasing your toddler in the parking lot? In a normal pregnancy a mother’s plasma volume can increase up to 50% by 34 weeks and is proportional to the birthweight of the baby. The increase in red blood cell count is much less (around 20-30%) and causes a decrease in hemoglobin concentration (the part of your blood that carries oxygen everywhere in your body). The purpose of this blood volume increase promotes the transfer of maternal and fetal exchanges of respiratory gasses (oxygen and carbon dioxide) and nutrients. It also minimizes the impact of maternal blood loss at delivery. So what does this all mean? It means that a pregnant woman’s blood is diluted and this can cause some common symptoms of pregnancy such as dizziness/lightheadedness, feeling out of breath from normal exertion and that infamous swelling 😉 The increase fluid volume is also a large component of the weight gain that naturally occurs during pregnancy. Don’t be alarmed if you start to notice that you’re out of breath much faster during a workout or if you need to take longer breaks between sets. It’s COMPLETELY normal and will balance back out postpartum. . . . . . #pregnancy #pregnancychanges #pregnancysymptoms #prenatal #outofbreath #prenatalfitness #prenatalexercisespecialist #didyouknow #pregnancyfacts #pregnancyfact #momstobe #yyctrainer #yycpersonaltrainer #yycpregnancy

GLUTES ON FIRE 🔥 Who doesn’t want stronger glutes?! These muscles will be very helpful in maintaining posture, gait and low back strength during pregnancy as well as so in the pushing phase of labour 🤰🏼 Here are 3 great exercises to strengthen the glutes during pregnancy (or postpartum!). Swipe 👉🏼 to see each one. Exercises: 1️⃣ Clam Shells - Place loop (if using) around thoughts just above knees. Lay on your side with knees bent and heels together. Open from knees while squeezing glutes. 2️⃣ Quad-Ped Leg Extensions - plate loop (if using) around thighs just above knees. Begin in quad-per position (on all fours) with back flat and pelvis tucked to engage core. Extend leg straight back with foot flexed and avoid rocking at hips. 3️⃣ Side Lying Single Leg V-Up - place loop (if using) around thighs just above knees. Lay on side with your bottom arm forward for support and top arm extended overhead. Raise top leg and arm up at the same time to contract obliques. Equipment: ➡️ Mat ➡️ Resistance Loop Sets & Reps: 3 sets x 15 reps per side Precautions: These exercises are safe in all trimesters in a pregnancy with no complications and no occurrence of diastasis recti (check out my previous post for more info). @abbottcoachingyyc

Diastasis recti is defined as separation of the rectus abdominus muscle down the midline fascia called the linea alba. In most cases the separation is greater than 2cm. It is a common occurrence during pregnancy as the uterus expands and puts pressure on the abdominal wall. This condition is not limited to pregnancy and can occur during labour, postpartum, in people (both male and female) with excess abdominal fat as well as in children. If you have diastasis recti you will likely have symptoms that include low back pain, pelvic floor weakness, poor posture, GI issues such as constipation or bloating and possibly abdominal hernias. But the biggest noticeable symptom is coning or bulging along the abdominal midline during rest and/or exertion (for example while coughing or during a core exercise). So how do you check for diastasis? Begin laying on your back with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor. Place one hand vertically above your bellybutton (as shown) and place the other hand behind your head for support. Perform a slight crunch to engage your abdominals, just enough to lift your shoulders off the floor. Palpate above the belly button and then below the belly button, feeling for points of separation or gaps. A gap of up to 2 finger widths (or ~2cm) is common and fairly normal especially after delivery. A gap wider than this indicates the presence of a more serious diastasis. It’s fairly simple to test on your own but I always recommend having an prenatal/postnatal exercise specialist, physiotherapist or physician test it to confirm. Stay tuned for more posts about what to do if you can if you are diagnosed with diastasis recti. P R E G G O 🌿 C A R E /// there are SO many women in my practice giving birth this week and next! It’s so exciting being a part of the Birth Prep Team! 🌿Did you know that Women under Chiropractic care tend to have decrease labor times, decrease pain in labor and an overall more positive birth experience? When the spine and pelvis are in alignment- the joints, muscles, ligaments and pelvic floor can relax and the birth can unfold in a more natural way🌿I love sharing my knowledge in this area to the pregnant mamas in my practice and feel honoured to be a part of this amazing motherhood transition❤️ #prenatalchiro #yycprenatal #yycpregnancy #pregnancysupport

I had an ultrasound yesterday and they’re estimating my little fella’s current weight to be 9 lbs 😱 My first baby we had one 4 days before she came & they said she was around 6, she came out 8! I need some reassurance, did you have big babes or little babes?!

♥️ Blood health ♥️ _ Is one of the biggest key components to our overall health. _ Pale, grey, lifeless skin. Regularly constipated. Always cold/ cold belly. Varicose veins and spider veins. Painful periods. Are just a few signs of blood stagnation in the body. _ Stagnant blood in our body is breeding grounds for a multitude of imbalances to occur We want our blood to be flowing without restriction throughout our body, but especially in womxn the blood flow to our uterus is crucial for menstrual, sexual, and fertility health. _ When the blood flow to our uterus and ovaries is stagnant and restricted because of poor alignment, scar tissue, adhesion, inflammation, and immobility (which we all have to some degree) our uterus and ovaries do not function as optimally as they could. _ Changing our blood viscosity will change stagnation and congestion in our pelvic bowl. But you can’t change blood viscosity through meditation, energy work, or even exercise. It is a multilayered approach needed to change our blood health but it is totally possible. And will change your whole health completely. _ When we heal our blood we heal ourselves on such a deep level it transforms us. Our periods will change. Our digestion will change. Our mental focus and brain capabilities change. Our fertility and organ function changes. _ This deep full spectrum healing is what we are needing and is what I offer to my clients. Hands on therapy, nutritional and herbal advice, embodied self care practices all to support you in truly healing. Book your appointment through the link in my bio ♥️

B A B Y ☀️ C H I R O??? What does that even L O O K like? I get this question quite often—So here’s the 411. It actually LOOKS a lot like a baby massage — but here’s Why it actually is very Different ; . . . 👉🏼Chiropractic Care is all about restoring spinal joint function and optimizing the nervous system (the system that controls EVERYthing in the body) . . 👉🏼A tension-free Baby is often a more calm and happy baby!! (Tension in the baby’s spine can show up as: favouring to look one way, uncomfortable laying on their back, disliking tummy time, having issues with feeding, asymmetrical use of their arms or legs, holding one hip high, and so much more. . . 👉🏼the Chiropractic technique that I use on newborns and babies is called a Sustained Contact adjustment - this is where I hold gentle pressure to release tension around the spine and dura (outer layer of the spinal cord) and add I often add range of motion and mobility with gentle movement and stretching . . 👉🏼When the spine and body are working at their best, the nervous system can work properly- opening up the Brain- Body connection, calming baby and optimizing healthy growth an development. . . 👉🏼Chiro adjustments are Safe, Gentle and Effective for babies. If you have questions about ether Chiro could help your kids, please ask❤️I am here to help. #yycmom #yycnewborns #yycpregnancy #calgarymoms #calgaryfamily

@postpartumqueen

Hey All! 👋🏽 it’s been awhile since I introduced myself and theirs sooo many new faces! I’m Christine, 🙋🏽‍♀️ the Founder of @postpartumqueen I started this business when I noticed a lack of support, care and info out their for new moms 🤰🏼who have just had a baby. 🤱🏽I noticed a lot of moms suffering “down there” and thinking it was normal, 😬I noticed moms suffering through breastfeeding, 🤱🏼and moms feeling ashamed that they were feeling terrible 😪and not wanting to tell anyone because they felt they shouldn’t feel that way! So I decided this needed to stop and what better way than to get all of the products that can help a mom heal faster regardless if she’s breastfeeding 🤱🏾or not, had a vaginal birth or C- Section💪🏽💪🏽. And combine that will all of the best resources in Canada 🇨🇦and the US 🇺🇸to help her get through the postpartum period with ease and support. So I started @postpartumqueen care kits, a beautifully packed gift 💝that moms can gift them selves, or get at a baby shower🎁 to help them prepare BEFORE baby arrives! 👶🏽 Let me know what you think of my small business and say hi to me in the comments! 😘
