Ba chor mee and fried carrot cake - absolute comfort food. Even though this Meepok wasn’t that fantastic, to me it’s good enough and plus it’s near where I gym. The carrot cake though, it’s a must-try because it’s one of the better ones that I’ve tasted in a long time. Part 6/6 And if course dessert to end everything. Any mango sago fans out there? Haha this was a great end to an already very satisfying meal. Plus the dry ice makes it look really cool doesn’t it?✌️ This series of posts are from 2 recent meals that I had at Long Beach Seafood over at Steven’s Road. Food was excellent as usual and not to mention the fantastic service from the manager who became a family friend over years of dining at Long Beach Seafood (thank you btw). I have to really commend the Alaskan King Crab made with white pepper sauce and of course the popular classic chili crab. My family always orders extra tang hoon with the bamboo clams because it goes very well with the garlic and sauce. Our choice of carbs is the duck la mian or duck ramen. If you’re a fan of thick and peppery soup with a pleasant smokey aroma, then you’re gonna love it. Part 5/6 I suppose many Long Beach fans would usually order the la la beehoon or the la la horfun, maybe even a crab noodles soup dish, but my dad really likes the duck la mian. If anything it’s like ramen, thick soup, chewy noodles and a strong tasty base. Part 3/6 Who loves chili crab? Zach loves chili crab, is it true? I do I do I do-ooooo! Haha 90s kids would get this reference. But yes I do love eating chili crab. However if I had to pick between black pepper and chili crab, I’d pick the former. Part 1/6 Fish Maw soup with pumpkin & seafood. Fried Yu tiao stuffed with seafood paste. The soup was thick but not overly gooey and it definitely set the standard for the rest of the meal. I must say the addition of pumpkin added a subtle sweetness to the taste. Part 1/4 Big boiling pot of thick sharksfin soup with crab meat! Very traditional and very shiok! ✌️ I don’t know how many of you know about Moi Lum but to many it’s a family favourite Singaporean-Cantonese restaurant. I love coming here because my parents made friends with the head chef and he fries our sang mee and horfun until it’s burnt and full of wok hei, which you can’t really find in Singapore anymore. Unfortunately, Moi Lum will close its doors for good in March 2019 due to increase in rent and well, the head chef is getting tired and wants to enjoy a peaceful retirement. While the date isn’t confirmed yet, to me it’s an end an era and the end of my sang mee and horfun fried the way it should be fried. Part 3/3 Inaniwa Udon soup, my guilty pleasure California maki (Lmao), miso soup and fried manju for dessert. ✌️ Another fantastic meal at Sushi Kondo! This was actually lunch on New Year’s Day itself so I guess you could say I started 2019 with quite a bang. Although this year may seem pretty uncertain, I hope it’ll be better than 2018. Btw, I’ve posted sushi Kondo lots of times and you’ll notice that I tend to not order pieces like sea urchin and Otoro. Had dinner here last week! Having eaten here more than 30 times or so, I can safely say that this is the best the standard has been in months! There was a period of time where I noticed the quality was dropping but seems like they’re back on track! Crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside! Will be back again soon for sure! In Hong Kong, the wanton mee is in the form of soup, thin noodles with great texture (love the crunch btw) and sizeable dumplings made from shrimp, absolutely lovely. In Singapore, our wanton mee is usually dry, soggy noodles, really small and pathetic dumplings with tiny bits of meat and paper thin slices of char siew...meh...BUT if you have great chili, suddenly the dish is transformed and people will most likely say it’s good! Right? Especially with lard! Haha ok I’m exaggerating but chili does play an important role in Singapore wanton mee. Violet Oon’s Fried laksa, beef rendang, sayeur lodeh, and I forgot what the pork dish was called lol. Gotta admit that the roast duck here is pretty darn good. You don’t even need sauce because it’s already packed full of juice. And of course, that crispy skin just melts in your mouth. Swipe ➡️ for all pics! Dinner at Venue by Sebastian the other night! About $130 incl gst and service charge for these 5 dishes. What I ordered were: Burrata, pan seared foie gras with poached egg, handmade pasta with duck ragu, grilled octopus and cold pasta with konbu and truffle oil ✌️ Overall, although I thought the portions were a little on the small side, especially the cold pasta and the octopus, the taste of every dish was really good; I was pretty impressed actually. All 5 dishes were delicious but if I had to pick the stand out ones, it would be the cold pasta and octopus, which were both coincidentally the 2 smallest dishes (🤣). I look forward to my next visit here! Chilled Angel Hair Pasta with quail medallions, chilled prawn pot noodles, beef flank steak and mushroom macchiato. Dinner at Marble Bistro the other night. I decided not to opt for the tasting menu as I was skeptical so I ordered some of their “claim to fame” dishes which I thought was the safer choice. Despite a very strong 4.9/5 on Facebook reviews and garnering high praise from many food bloggers, I finished dinner feeling unimpressed and unsatisfied. No doubt the prices were affordable, but the food to me was not exactly near the standard described in all these reviews. I thought the pasta was a mismatch of flavours, the steak was kinda bland and the mushroom macchiato was really overpowering. Some good points - they didn’t overcook their pasta and they made a flank steak a lot less tough, easier to chew and swallow. The quail medallions were cooked just nice and the prawn noodles was light and refreshing. Halal char kway teow anyone? As much as I do love my singaporean Chinese food with lard and pork, we do live in a multi-racial and multi-cultural society and once in a while there are these stalls that serve halal chinese singaporean food. There’s this stall in Bukit Merah hawker centre which serves halal char kway teow and its not bad, in fact pretty tasty and better than some other char kway teow stalls that I have eaten from in Singapore. If you like your tonkotsu ramen soup thick, heavy and strong then this is the place for you. In addition, this place differentiates itself from other ramen shops by serving beef in their ramen. What you see here is the sumo ramen which has ox tail, beef short ribs, brisket, tendon and bacon. A real treat for meat lovers. Also tried their okonomiyaki with foie gras which was not bad. Part 3/3 Dinner at Moi Lum with the head chef around. Yes horfun is a very common thing in Singapore but good ones are hard to come by. In fact, I dare say that some “good ones” are really not that impressive. The head Chef here knows how to do it the old fashioned way. Bistro Du Le Pin’s 10 course Omakase for $70 before drinks and ++. This is my third visit here and although it’s always a pleasure to eat here I wasn’t really fond of one of the dishes this time. Gotta admit that the soft shell crab dish was a little disappointing compared to the rest of the items. I’ve also noticed that the chef would usually change two items from his regular Omakase course (6th & 7th) and keep the rest more or less the same. I honestly don’t mind that everything is more or less the same since i enjoy stuffing my face with them but I may consider requesting if the menu can be altered slightly next time just to see what other dishes he can produce ;) Anyway what you see are: 1. My 2nd time at Keisuke Hamburg. Ate the beef patty with 3 kinds of cheese and the steak which were both pretty meh. To be frank, I don’t really think much about this place. It’s a good deal price-wise since you get free flow of eggs and a salad bar but in terms of taste I think it’s so so only. Went back here for lunch to eat the soy sauce braised duck again! This time round although the meat was still succulent and juicy, I noticed the skin seemed a little wrinkled and for whatever reason the dish itself didn’t look as appetising as the first visit. Piping hot dishes of seafood claypot and grouper fish with eggplant also served in a claypot. After eating that beef brisket & tendon claypot, we realised that the chef is really good in stewed dishes so we quickly ordered the seafood and grouper fish claypot. Beef brisket beef tendon claypot or also known as Ngau lam ngau gan po (ok I might be wrong since my cantonese is almost non-existent). Anyway, Summer Palace serves the classic Hong Kong version of this dish with the sauce thicker but yet not as overpowering as the Singapore version. Just like the roast duck in the previous post, this is definitely one of the better beef brisket beef tendon claypot dishes that I’ve tasted in Singapore and I savoured every bit of it. They’re really generous with the beef tendons too! This was by far one of the best roast ducks I’ve tasted in Singapore. The meat was moist and juicy and the skin was really crisp. This dish was served with no sauce and indeed no sauce was needed to enjoy this duck. I’m sure lots of you know by now that this is one of my favourite lunch spots in Suntec City. I usually love pure tonkotsu ramen but this tonkotsu-crab broth is a rare exception and always a must-eat for me. It’s slightly thicker and somewhat more overpowering than normal tonkotsu broth but that’s what makes it so darn good in my opinion. Mmmm chanko nabe 😋 big hotpot loaded with chicken, pork and a whole lot of veggies! My friends and I ate both the shoyu and miso broth. Ramen goes better with the shoyu broth while porridge compliments the miso broth better. This will be interesting. Some will agree and I think a lot will disagree when I say that the tze char food in Kek Seafood isn’t good and quite frankly rather expensive. Now having said that, I didn’t order crabs as I wanted to check out their tze char dishes especially the moon light horfun which garnered lots of praise....but not from me unfortunately. The horfun was mushy and tasted like it was pre-fried, the prawn paste chicken’s batter was very thick and lacked flavour; it tasted more oil than prawn paste. Don’t even get me started on the coffee pork ribs lol but in general I thought the food wasn’t good. Part 4/4 There was a slight hiccup for the pizza as I thought having an oven that size would mean that my pizza would be served as one of the earlier dishes however it took a whopping 40 mins to arrive (even later than the steak) 😳 I’m not sure what caused the delay - maybe lots of takeout orders - but I appreciate the fact that the staff acknowledged this hiccup and apologised. In any case, the pizza was pretty decent, in fact one of the better ones that I’ve tasted in Singapore although I would’ve preferred the crust more charred like the ones I ate in Italy but still, it was good enough for me. ✌️So that wraps up my dinner at In Piazza over at Steven’s Road Novotel. Part 3/4 Bistecca alla Fiorentina. About 800g of a Prime cut porterhouse cooked medium rare. This is the true highlight of the meal and frankly the dish that stole the show. Although this beef is from Australia and not actually from Italy, I must say that the Chef did a fantastic job searing this steak and letting it rest before serving. I also noticed that the colouring of the beef had a deep shade of red which I believe would mean that it was aged. Part 2/4 Bucatini with cured pork and tagliatelle with porcini mushrooms. Although I prefer the former over the latter, both pastas were great! Teochew style Oyster congee and Orh Luak! I especially love the oyster congee here and must order a bowl every time. The broth that they use is light yet full of flavour! I finally tried that famous 108 depot road laksa while I was on military reservist last Monday. I remember the first time watching it on Makansutra and on TV it looked great! However, I was pretty disappointed to be frank. Dinner at Shinji over at Carlton Hotel the other day! I ordered the $220 edomae sushi course which comprises of a number of nigiri sushi and some accompanying items such as a starter dish, soup and fruits for dessert. Overall, although it was an enjoyable and delicious meal, I personally felt that the sushi was a tad bit small and cost performance-wise, just like many of Singapore’s prestigious restaurants, not very good. Anyway, big eater me wasn’t full after the meal so I’d be pretty reluctant to come back in the near future. Simple Tze Char at First Stop Food Junction over at Queen Street opposite Wilby Central (can’t find the exact location tag on ig). I used to come here pretty often when I was a university student so even though the food ain’t fantastic, it holds a special place in my heart - the food is “good enough”. There are some standout dishes of course and those are the ones which I usually order. My favourites are the prawn paste chicken, mee goreng, fried rice, salted egg pork ribs (didn’t order this time) and the prawn rolls (Hei Zou). Had Chanko Nabe for dinner the other day at Dosukoi Sake Bar over at Orchard Plaza level 3. Fyi, this shop was previously known as Chanko Nada. Anyway, to feast on this, you must order minimum two person’s portion. Considering the quantity and quality of what you get, I’d say it’s pretty worth it especially if you’re a big eater like me. My foodie friend and I finished everything you see on this post plus a few more small dishes.
