Teochew style Oyster congee and Orh Luak! I especially love the oyster congee here and must order a bowl every time. The broth that they use is light yet full of flavour! The oyster omelette is also packed with oysters but the ones that I ate in Hong Kong are better. I finally tried that famous 108 depot road laksa while I was on military reservist last Monday. I remember the first time watching it on Makansutra and on TV it looked great! However, I was pretty disappointed to be frank. Dinner at Shinji over at Carlton Hotel the other day! I ordered the $220 edomae sushi course which comprises of a number of nigiri sushi and some accompanying items such as a starter dish, soup and fruits for dessert. Overall, although it was an enjoyable and delicious meal, I personally felt that the sushi was a tad bit small and cost performance-wise, just like many of Singapore’s prestigious restaurants, not very good. Anyway, big eater me wasn’t full after the meal so I’d be pretty reluctant to come back in the near future. Simple Tze Char at First Stop Food Junction over at Queen Street opposite Wilby Central (can’t find the exact location tag on ig). I used to come here pretty often when I was a university student so even though the food ain’t fantastic, it holds a special place in my heart - the food is “good enough”. There are some standout dishes of course and those are the ones which I usually order. My favourites are the prawn paste chicken, mee goreng, fried rice, salted egg pork ribs (didn’t order this time) and the prawn rolls (Hei Zou). Had Chanko Nabe for dinner the other day at Dosukoi Sake Bar over at Orchard Plaza level 3. Fyi, this shop was previously known as Chanko Nada. Anyway, to feast on this, you must order minimum two person’s portion. Considering the quantity and quality of what you get, I’d say it’s pretty worth it especially if you’re a big eater like me. My foodie friend and I finished everything you see on this post plus a few more small dishes. Vato Mexican Torched Cheese West Coast Banh Bao Vietnamese Soyo Japanese Had lunch at Hafudog the other day! My sis and I wolfed down 2 hot dogs each which didn’t feel filling at first hmmm. But when we went back to work after an hour or so, the food coma started settling in and I felt full for the rest of the day...until dinner time of course. $75 nett dinner course at IL Den over at Orchard Plaza. 1. Assorted one bite appetisers: sea urchin with tofu, homemade bread, pate 2. Seared scallop with caviar 3. Orecchiette pasta 4. Iberico pork jowl 5. Yuzu sorbet and Kyoho grapes 6. Complimentary shot of sake Overall taste-wise was pretty delicious from the start to the finish. I especially liked the pate and pasta dish. My friends and I even had a nice chat with Chef Javier and planned to come back one day...maybe. As for my experience with the $75, no doubt everything pretty good from start to finish, the only drawback was I felt the portions were a little on the small side. I was still hungry at the end of the meal but maybe it’s because I’m a big eater.... An over cooked shrimp disintegrates in your mouth, but a shrimp that is cooked just nice has a great crunch and deep flavour to it. The veal liver cutlet is actually on trial and depending on how customers react to this will affect whether or not it gets added to the menu. Being a fan of liver, I really enjoyed this dish and even though that thick brown sauce tasted great, it went even better with the grated capsicum. Hamaguri Clam tonkotsu shoyu ramen over at Chijmes. Yes I’m sure many of you have seen or heard of this already and I’m happy to say this is a hit for me. I wouldn’t describe my experience as shiok but I would say it was very refreshing. The combination of the light clam-pork bone broth, a tinge of truffle paste and porcini oil was a real treat to my taste buds. Hope they can maintain the standard, definitely coming back again one day! Btw, don’t get hung up on that word “Michelin.” Focus on the taste and not whether it met expectations just because of that word. 👍 ハマグリ豚骨醤油ラーメンです!シンガポールに新しいラーメン屋です。スープは素晴らしくて、すがすがしいの感じ😋また来たい! 😢Good bye Mozza...Apparently this restaurant will re-open as Nostra Cucina on 1st August. Fried yam noodles with truffle oil, steamed kampong chicken, mutton claypot, fish and beancurd claypot, fish noodles, beehoon with pork trotters Dinner at Tonny Restaurant the other night. Overall, everything was decent. Some standout dishes include the claypot mutton and the fish noodles but the rest were normal I suppose, maybe slightly above average...slightly. Price-wise, it can be compared to the likes of Asia Grand but of course don’t expect the environment and service to be that of the latter. Give a try or a miss? Part 2/2 Dinner at Hai Tien Lo. Just sharing some of the pics from the current promotion of 2 claypot dishes for $38. Food wise everything was decent, nothing really stood out; in fact I would term the food as quite all right. However, I was rather disappointed with the extremely slow service. I wrote on my IG stories that it took 30 mins for the food to come. My apologies, I meant it took a whopping 45 mins!!! And to make things worse, when we ordered extra dishes, we waited for 30 mins only to find out that the Chef didn’t see the order despite us asking the staff to check our order at least twice during our wait. Part 6/6 Inaniwa udon 稲庭うどん ✌️ In many cases, a bowl of miso soup is served at the end of a sushi meal but greedy me always wants something a little heavier but not too heavy. Part 5/6 Assorted sushi part 2 - Yellow tail belly, grey cockle, special item 1, medium fatty tuna, raw octopus, special item 2, octopus suckers, ark shell clam, Kodai snapper. カンパチトロ、とり貝、秘密1、中トロ、生タコ、秘密2、タコ吸盤、赤貝、小鯛。 ✌️ As mentioned in my previous post, I tend to prefer picking the sushi neta that I want rather than Omakase. I seldom eat Fattest Tuna and Sea Urchin in Singapore because I think it’s not just expensive but quality-wise, well not the best yes, which is why it doesn’t appear in my pictures especially when I go to Kondo Sushi. I have to really give credit to the raw octopus though, it’s one of my favourite sushi neta and it’s not overly chewy here. ✌️ For those who have been following my profile for a while now, you’d probably know that my go to place for sushi would be Sushi Kondo at Sentosa Golf Club (which for whatever reason I can’t seem to tag it as a location on IG...). Part 4/6 Assorted sushi - Snapper, striped horse mackerel, horse mackerel, alfonsino, lean tuna, sardine, squid tentacles, Japanese whiting, A5 Joshu beef. 鯛、しまあじ、鯵、金目鯛、赤身漬け、いわし、下足、キス、A5和牛。 ✌️ At Sushi Kondo, you can order the Omakase or you can be like me, pick the fish that I want to eat. Don’t worry there’s a second part to the sushi, but based on just this post alone, some of my more preferred pieces would be the marinated lean tuna, seared alfonsino and I do like the joshu beef quite a lot. The snapper topped with yuzu kousho is also a great piece to start off the meal because it gives your palate a little citrus kick! Part 3/6 Hamaguri clam soup ハマグリ出汁スープ ✌️ If there’s a dish in Kondo Sushi that really stole the show, it’s got to be this! Pretty unfortunate that pictures don’t do justice for the flavour that this soup produced. Part 2/6 Grilled belt fish with its roe fried 焼き太刀魚 ✌️ If you’re a fan of grilled fish, you may wanna consider ordering the grilled belt fish served with its roe fried. This fish is known to be rather fatty with lots of sweet juice/oil oozing out when you sink your teeth into it. Again, don’t compare this with what you can get in Japan but for Singapore standard this is already pretty enjoyable. Part 1/6 Chicken karaage & Shrimp Tempura 鳥唐揚げと海老天ぷら ✌️ I don’t often eat karaage in Singapore with the exception of Rang Mang Shokudo and Kondo Sushi for the simple reason that other places aren’t very good. Kondo’s chicken karaage is crispy on the outside and very juicy on the inside but of course the marinade isn’t as good as a specialist like Rang Mang. Oops I actually forgot all about the second part of my dinner at Arakawa...anyway, after my Friend and I finished our katsuo don, which was the 2nd last item of the $80 dinner course, we realised we were not even close to being full. So we decided to order from the oden menu since apart from the dinner course, Arakawa is known to serve good oden in Singapore. This decision did kinda salvage our meal a little because the oden was pretty decent, pricey but tasty at least. Dinner at Arakawa over at Orchard Plaza the other evening! Apparently this Japanese restaurant specialising in Osaka Kappo is known to be quite a hidden gem given how Low profile it is. With a perfect 5/5 rating on Facebook, I was really delighted when my Friend called me out to try this place. Whatever you see on this post is all in the $80 dinner course. 1. Sardine and sesame tofu with crab meat and miso 2. 3 kinds of sashimi (salmon belly, tuna, yellow tail) 3. Simmered duck with yam 4. Grilled barracuda with gluten 5. Pike and sweet corn tempura 6. Katsuo don with sesame 7. Miso soup 8. Dessert My verdict: Unfortunately, I wasn’t impressed. The food tasted all right; the duck and tempura stood out but the rest were decent at best. For $80, I didn’t think the portions and the ingredients used justified the price either so yes I’m a little disappointed. My Friend and I were not full either so we ended up ordering Oden which I’ll cover in a separate post. Anyway, I’m not sure how this place garnered so many 5/5 ratings on Facebook but taste is a subjective thing yes? Part 5/5 Out of the 3 noodle dishes you see here, I think the simmered mai fan with meat was the better dish, followed by the beef horfun. Part 4/5 One thing Hong Kong chefs are extremely good in is their simmered dishes. As such, their claypot dishes definitely stand out in this restaurant. Part 3/5 I’m gonna cut the posts down to 5 instead of 7... The classic beef slices fried with choy sum which we ordered two plates because it was really delicious. Tomato egg, another classic dish which turned out to be quite a show stealer. And the soup which frankly wasn’t outstanding but ok... Part 1/5 Cha Siew, squid fried with salt and pepper, and cold pork shank. Just sharing some dishes which I ate from Asia Grand Restaurant during two of my dinners there. Seems like most of the chefs there are from Hong Kong and true enough their stewed/braised dishes turned out pretty delicious. There were of course some hits and misses but in general, it’s a good place to dine in. Would love to try their dim sum during lunch one day! Part 3/3 Fried wok hei prawn bee hoon! I thought this was the best dish on the menu even though I expected there to be more wok hei, but as someone who cooks I know how difficult it can be to achieve this so I think they did a great job already! Part 2/3 Prawn mee soup version, salted egg chicken and some fish paste fritter (thing I forgot the name lol). As I mentioned in my previous post, I preferred the dry version to the soup version because I thought the taste was better overall. By no means am I saying the soup version is bad though, it’s still pretty tasty, in fact better than quite a lot of places in Singapore but I felt it lacked that “kick” which the better ones have like the prawn mee in Hong Lim Complex for example. Part 1/3 Prawn mee dry version with lots of chili! Hmm I really should’ve taken a photo of it with the noodles mixed up but...I was too hungry! Apart from the fried wok hei beehoon (to be posted soon) this to me was 2nd best! Part 6/6 If for whatever reason you don’t feel like eating despite coming to a ramen bar 🙄, their chirashi don is pretty good too! I only took a bite out of this because I was in the process of downing both the short rib ramen and sumo ramen but that one bite was enough to leave an impression! Part 5/6 The popular sumo ramen. As mentioned in Part 1, although I enjoyed the short rib ramen, I thought the sumo ramen was far better. Apart from having “the works” because you essentially get all the toppings like the tendon, oxtail etc, I thought the soup tasted better because of this combination and let’s face it, this is a lot easier to eat than a 600g bone in short rib. Be sure to request your noodles to be cooked Al Dente style if you want to make your experience an even better one. Part 1/6 600g bone-in beef short rib with tonkotsu ramen! Impressive no doubt and although very Instagram worthy, the rib had an extremely strong and overpowering red wine taste which I felt packed too strong a punch. Really delicious tonkotsu soup and noodles though (request for al dente style). Anyway, although I definitely preferred the sumo ramen to this one, I’m not saying this is by any means bad. Sometimes the best food is the food you grew up with. Char kway teow really looks like shit on picture but the taste though is something uniquely Singaporean/Malaysian. This is my first visit here and I was pleasantly surprised how enjoyable and wonderful this meal turned out to be. It may not be authentic Japanese sushi but it’s somewhat tweaked to surprise your taste buds and add a little bit more flavour and creativity to the sushi. For instance, you’d notice that different toppings were used for certain sushi neta and even some “plain” pieces were brushed with not just shoyu but with a tinge of truffle infused into the sauce. Part 7/7 Carbo dish number 2 and finale - big prawn hor fun topped with lard. Again this is tweaked to our liking with the noodles more seared and a little bit more burnt so that the wok hei really comes out. By this time all 9 of us were pretty darn full but that didn’t stop us from finishing this big plate of pure goodness! Considering all the dishes were large size and many of the items were tweaked to our liking, this was a bloody good meal and one well worth it. P.S. Part 5/7 Chinese style scrambled eggs with crab meat and stir fried venison with ginger and spring onions. Usually the egg dish is fried with sharksfin but since we already had a big pot of it at the beginning, we opted to have the egg fried with crab meat instead. Part 4/7 Carbo dish 1 - Fried sang mee! More commonly known as crispy egg noodles with seafood but this one was tweaked to my family’s liking. Unlike the common method of simply deep frying the noodles into hard crispy cakes, the noodles in this tweaked version was pan seared such that the edges are burnt but the middle is still somewhat soft. Apparently that’s how it was fried in the past before people started complaining that the burnt edges are cancerous and whatever; I don’t care because it does taste better like this. Anyway, combined with the stock that the restaurant uses and topped with lard, this is one hell of a treat to your taste buds! Part 3/7 Initially I ordered a fried pork liver spring onion dish but the Chef said the liver wasn’t too good that day so he substituted it with a fish. Quite a pleasant surprise that it turned out better than expected. You can see that the fish was sliced up and placed back to form its body with mushrooms and carrots, kinda like how japanese chefs serve their whole fish sashimi. Part 2/7 Usually when I eat chicken, I really hate eating the breast meat because it’s always so freakin dry and tough. So for those who haven’t been to Teppei Omakase before, it’s an $80 dinner course consisting of a variety of items; both big and small. All in all there are about 17 or 18 items.There will always be hits and misses which is why I won’t consider this place to be fantastic but it’s not sh*t either. I’d give it around 3-3.5/5 which means it’s decent or “good enough” that I wouldn’t mind going back. In my most recent visit to Teppei, other standout dishes include: 1. Big negitoro with tempura flakes handroll 2. Grilled Wagyu beef 3. Starting assorted platter I always enjoy eating the big negitoro handroll. It’s their signature dish for the Omakase meal and it’s always delicious. Wagyu beef is always a treat to the taste buds especially if it’s A4 and above; I have a feeling this one is A3 though. Just sharing 3 out of the 5 main courses offered at Teppei. 1. Sashimi with Rice 2. Fried rice with sea urchin 3. Unagi chazuke Out of all the main courses that I’ve tried, I think the sashimi with rice is the best one. Before I get flak for this, I have no idea why they call it that when it should be better known as a Kaisen don or chirashi don, but that’s what they call it. Anyway, if you look closely, the rice is actually slightly yellowish; that’s because it’s mixed with sea urchin. My favourite fried hokkien prawn mee! Lots of wok hei, sticky but not gooey and he gave me extra lard lol. Me and my parents downed two $20 dollar plates because it was just too shiok! Part 7/7 In the previous post, the body and claws of the lobsters were used for the fried noodles, but nothing goes to waste as the head and legs are used to make this wonderful porridge. A great end to an already enjoyable meal! Dinner at Teochew Paradise a few weeks ago! This was a special occasion so a few items were pre-ordered. To me, this is one of the better Teochew restaurants in Singapore; better than places like Chui Huay Lim Teochew restaurant. Price-wise, not the cheapest (duh), but it’s Singapore so expect to pay for good Chinese food. Part 6/7 Fried noodles with lobster in superior stock. First pic shows just the stock alone with mainly the lobster claws and bodies. Second pic is of course the noodles mixed in. Overall pretty good, the restaurant superior stock is always a popular choice given it’s so tasty but for the noodles we requested for it to be slightly burnt but I think the Chef didn’t know the style we wanted and just deep fried it instead of pan searing it, ah well at least the dish still tasted good! Part 5/7 Oyster omelette and Yok Lan Gai (steamed chicken with thick sauce). Not the most picturesque but the chicken was quite all right (I prefer the one at Moi Lum). The oyster omelette turned out to be a surprise hit. I guess size matters because on a previous occasion I ordered a small size and it was pretty meh; this time though it was packed full of oysters and tasty starch.
