UPDATE: SA Police - "SA Police, assisted by forensic experts and an anthropologist, will today begin the meticulous process of excavating an area at a Yorke Peninsula property where the remains of a woman are believed to lie. Young mother-of-two Colleen Adams vanished in November 1973 and was reported missing by her mother about a month later. Her husband told police that the 24-year-old told him she was leaving and did not want to see him or their two young children again. Now aged 70, he was yesterday charged with her murder and is expected to appear in court today via videolink. In 1974 police from Major Crime attended the area investigating the missing person report, and following ongoing inquiries, in which no sign of Mrs Adams was found, her disappearance was officially declared a Major Crime in 1979. Detective Superintendent Bray said initially this was a missing persons inquiry with no crime scene or forensic evidence then, when it was declared a murder, investigators did everything they could to solve it. Over the decades police have followed various lines of inquiry in relation to their hunt for Mrs Adams, including searching a private rubbish tip at Port Clinton and properties at Wallaroo and Maitland. More recently the investigation was the subject of a full case review under the auspices of Operation Persist – a SA Police campaign by the Major Crime Investigation Branch focused on the resolution of cold case murders and suspicious missing persons. That review, in conjunction with some fresh information, identified new lines of inquiry and police returned to the couple’s former home in Bagnall Ave on Monday with ground penetrating radar and high-tech camera equipment. The accused yesterday visited the property and identified a location in the yard which will be excavated today. “This case has involved old fashioned detective work, assisted in recent days by the high profile of the case through the media,” Detective Superintendent Bray said. “We will have an examination to do in the house today and then we will begin some excavation work in the yard, but this will be a slow, careful process,” he said.
