Can you spot the people? In honor of #fashionrevolutionweek Im sharing these photos I took during my research in India in 2016. "Through the process, I came to understand that fast fashion is my greatest enemy. My research led me to the Panipat district of Haryana, India, which is the Western waste capitol for clothing. I first-handedly saw mountains upon mountains of clothes. Although India has created a market of turning our waste into reusable fibers, it is not as good as it sounds. By making money off of our waste, they are happy with us throwing away more and more." From the @spike_art_magazine article @czblomfield put together about my work ‼️LINK IN BIO‼️ . . . #fashionrevolution #truecost #imadeyourclothes #whomademyclothes #fashionwaste at Panipat

MW: Would you say your path, and even where you are, has been clear-cut? Has anything surprised you along the way? Margaret: After graduating last year, I came here (LA) to work for Jeremy Scott. I made samples and patterns for his FA/W 18 collection, and once the pieces showed in NYC, I quit. I made a gamble decision: I was going to spend time focusing on my own designs. So I got a job as a nanny and found a studio space in the LA Arts District. During that time, I got a message on Facebook from a high school colleague asking if I would want to travel to Charlotte, North Carolina to teach sewing classes to high school boys interested in fashion. They had said that fashion was having such a negative effect on their community — that kids were selling drugs and joining gangs so they could buy the latest Jordans. I dropped what I was doing and spent a month teaching those boys to sew. By the end of it, a stylist that follows me on Instagram bought one of the boy’s shorts for $175…and he was pumped. The first thing he talked about buying with the money? Jordan’s. [Laughs] It was an amazing experience — and now, five months later, they have turned the workshop into an after school program — offering me a job to come back and teach. . . . . #fashionrevolution #truecost #repurposed #upcycledclothing #sustainablefashion #magazine #photography #toomanyclothes at Arts District LA

MW: Was it intimidating to leave two fashion capitals of the world and go to Charlotte? Margaret: Yes, because I had a lot of fear that not being near a lot of connections would stunt my progress…..No, because teaching youth that the fashion industry is tricking them and using them — and then empowering them to fight back is truly putting my words — what I say my work is about — into action. Pick the medium that gets your message across best. If my work suffers because I am teaching, but my message is more than just a collection of words, then I’ll make that sacrifice. . . . . . . #fashionrevolution #fashiondesign #slowfashion #sustainablefashion #truecost #magazine #mouthwash #photography #toomanyclothes #recycle #upcycledclothing #repurposed at Arts District LA
