This week I kicked off a year of exciting events to celebrate 100 years of womenโ€™s suffrage by going to the Make her Mark exhibition put together by Hackney Museum in collaboration with the East End Womenโ€™s Museum. A great celebration of the contribution women in Hackney have made to their communities over the last 100 years by fighting for social, political and economic change. Looking forward to lots of talks, exhibitions and more this year. More to come, watch this space! #makehermark #exhibition #women #hackneywomen #campaigning #history #photography #education #learning #feminism #womensrights #womensstories #herstory #genderequality #empowerment #excited #2018 #100yearsofwomenssuffrage #centenary #hackneymuseum #eastendwomensmuseum #hackney #eastlondon #london at Hackney Museum

Two of my favourite posters and it feels right to share them on such a monumental day. Today marks 100 years of womenโ€™s suffrage. Of course this was only for propertied women over the age of 30, with the vote being extended to women over the age of 21 in 1928. It feels monumental to remember such an important development which was somewhat the start of women gaining other political freedoms. People have all sorts of personal reasons for voting or not voting but for me it comes down to something simple - women died for me to be able to vote. They were beaten, tortured, went on hunger strikes, were force fed and threw themselves in front of horses for this right. Yes whether you choose to exercise the right to vote is a bit more nuanced than that, it gets complicated by how much power we really have and what we are actually voting for. However, I am grateful to my suffragette sisters for setting the pathway for women exercising all sorts of political freedoms. Yes we still have a long way to go in the fight to achieve political, economic and social equality with men. But today is about celebrating women. So whatever youโ€™re doing ladies - I hope you are out there using your voice ๐ŸŽค๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿฝ #vote100 #100years #womenssuffrage #votingrights #representationofpeopleact #centenary #celebration #womensrights #feminism #campaigning #genderequality #longwaytogo #keeponfighting #useyourvoice #wecandoit
