In close collaboration with @cornelluniversity and @morphosisarchitects, we transcended the boundaries of active design and built the 160,000ft2 Bloomberg Center. It is the first academic building on Cornell Tech’s campus on Roosevelt Island New York, offering students, faculty and visitors an inspiring space for cutting-edge research and integrated learning. The architecture incorporates sustainability and smart building goals: low carbon and energy-efficient. Design elements include a 40,000ft2 extensive photovoltaic array elevated on a rooftop canopy and ground source heat pumps that harness the constant temperature of the earth to both warm and cool the building. The aim for the Stanford Graduate School of Business new building project was simple: to achieve the highest-possible sustainability rating.
The business school wanted to replace its existing facilities with eight new buildings to form a new campus called The Knight Management Center.
Our role was to guide fifteen of North America’s leading sustainability experts to plan how to attain the US Green Building Council’s LEED certification for the campuses.
One of the tasks included strategic use of solar panels to help save on energy costs. The 33kW solar PV arrays added will now generate 12.5% of the campus’ electricity, which together with other sustainability innovations earned the campus LEED Platinum-quality certification rating – the highest all-round environmental rating in North America.

A state-of-the-art sewage sludge treatment facility, power station and spa resort under one flowing 400m roof.
The environmentally-conscious design of Hong Kong's T-PARK means that nothing is wasted. Excess heat created during treatment is used to generate electricity, while wastewater is re-used on site, including for irrigation, rather than discharged from the facility.

We teamed up with Imagineer Productions and four of Coventry’s Secondary schools: Sidney Stringer, Finham Park, The Westwood Academy and President Kennedy, to co-create a structure marking the centenary of the Cathedral and Diocese of Coventry in 2018.
This model of the design joins together 4 waves to make one, 12m long 3m high wave built from 4,000 lollipop sticks. It was designed using Grasshopper and GSA and includes 1,200 3D printed joints that took over 420 hours to print.
This project kick-starts the week of events in Coventry called the “Festival of Imagineers” aimed at getting young people interested in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects through art and design.

Cut into the side of a Lebanese cliff, this striking residential design is highly efficient. Its transparent rooftop swimming pool keeps the living quarters below cool with minimal energy usage, whilst the surrounding rock provides year-round thermal insulation.
Working closely with OPA, we are taking the lead in engineering, and providing design solutions that preserve the 'brutality' of the space by hiding the complex engineering that makes it possible.

Inspired by the complex geometry of DNA, the landmark bridge at Singapore’s #MarinaBay is encircled by the world’s first curved double helix design. Using our 3D software to explore a virtual environment, we identified a method to link the two helices together to increase its strength, resulting in greater load-bearing than its delicate appearance suggests.

Arup Fellow Jo da Silva has been awarded the Institution of Structural Engineers 2017 Gold Medal. It recognises her distinguished career and leadership in structural and humanitarian engineering over the past decades.
At Arup, she founded and leads a specialist not-for-profit business, Arup International Development Group, which works exclusively with organisations committed to improving human development outcomes. It helps them make the best use of resources in combating poverty and vulnerability, and increasing wellbeing and resilience.
Among her many achievements, one of Jo’s proudest comes from her work following the Indian Ocean tsunami that occurred at the end of 2004.
These photos were taken in 2006, when Muslim Aid invited Arup to undertake a technical review of their post-tsunami housing reconstruction programme. Jo and a small team undertook a field trip in Indonesia, covering more than 1000km of the Aceh coastline to review the existing housing programme there. Arup shared the outcome of its work with UN agencies and NGOs so that it could benefit all parties and the wider tsunami reconstruction effort.
Recently, Jo has been leading a cross-sector drive on urban resilience, helping engineers to deliver positive social impact by making critical infrastructure better able to stand up to shocks and stresses. She joins a distinguished group of previous winners, including Arup founder Ove Arup, and is the first woman to receive the award.

The Queensferry Crossing is the longest triple tower cable-stayed bridge in the world, and the biggest infrastructure project in Scotland for a generation.
We were part of the Jacobs-Arup Joint Venture, supporting Transport Scotland in delivering a modern, sophisticated structure that allows new route for motorway traffic across the Firth of Forth, north of #Edinburgh.
The new bridge features a state-of-the-art Structural Health Monitoring System, which consists of carefully positioned sensors providing real-time structural data.
This technology will inform maintenance teams to inspect and intervene to pre-empt potential issues in real time.

Flexibility, openness and ease of access underpinned the design of British broadcaster Sky's flagship new building, #SkyCentral. We worked with architects and designers @amandalevetearchitects, @PLPArchitecture and @macegroup to deliver a super-adaptable building that meets the needs of more than 3,500 employees.
Working practices are changing and employees expect to exercise greater control over how and where they work. The building helps meet the growing trend towards offering private spaces for individual work and open spaces for collaboration.

Perhaps the most striking structure of the 2008 Beijing Games, the National Stadium – dubbed the Bird’s Nest – is inspired by traditional Chinese style of ‘crazed pottery’. Although the pattern looks random, in fact, it abides complex geometric rules. The circular shape of the stadium represents heaven and complements the adjacent square form of the National Aquatics Centre which reflects the Chinese symbol for earth.
Putting the spectator experience at the heart of this project by ensuring clear sight lines at any time from any angle, the seating bowl was established first, with the outer façade wrapping around it.

The grass-covered, double-curved roof of the new @the_macallan Distillery will be one of the largest of its kind in the world when complete. We worked with @rogersstirkharbour to design the silhouette that is in balance with the beautiful landscape of the Scottish Highlands, and complements the natural appearance of the historic estate.

Designing from the inside out, we collaborated with @NationalSawdust’s creative lead Kevin Dolan and architects @BureauV to create an engaging recording and performance space at the heart of #Brooklyn, New York. We used Arup’s #SoundLab technology to auralise the performance hall acoustics, enabling both the design team and the client to visit our office and listen to the room acoustics as the design developed. The result is an engaging, enveloping, and intimate sound and theatrical experience for both performers and audiences. Part of a larger redevelopment of the @BullRing Centre in Birmingham, UK, the visionary Selfridges store building opened in 2003 to critical acclaim.
The distinct, organic form of the façade – a design by Future System architecture – is brought to life by 15,000 anodised aluminium discs that reflect light, giving the building its iconic look. We provided multi-disciplinary services for the project from structural engineering to energy-saving solutions and 3D modelling.

The Centro Botín is an art gallery of two parts, linked by walkways that act as a communications core between the two.
The work of architect #RenzoPiano along with @luisvidalarchitects , it has established this Spanish port city as a global art destination.
Arup carried out the design and construction management of building services, and developed the lighting design using natural light in harmony with the architecture. We also carried out façade, fire safety and structural consulting.

After being closed for six years for an extensive renovation project, the historic @HarvardArtMuseum – the Fogg, the Busch-Reisinger, and the Sackler – were joined together into a new building in 2014.
We worked with world-renowned architect #RenzoPiano and local architect #PayetteArchitects to reinvent what was once the Fogg Museum of Art.
The extensive redesign preserves its 16th century-inspired façade and courtyard, and provides new and improved museum quality gallery spaces. We worked with the #design team to craft a high-performance building that will emit 30% fewer greenhouse gas emissions per square foot than the existing buildings, which will help #Harvard stay on track to meet its ambitious greenhouse gas commitments.

The Singapore Sports Hub in Kallang put our tenacity to the test as we oversaw creation of a world-class 55,000 seat stadium with a genuinely innovative design that adds to the success of the area’s long-term planning.
The elegant dome design of the Sports Hub spans 310 meters (that’s close to four A380 airplanes parked wing to wing) and is the world’s largest freestanding dome.
To ensure maximum comfort for spectators in Singapore’s tropical climate, the ultra-thin movable roof can cover or reveal the vast pitch by providing shade and fresh air flow to every seat in the stadium.

The New Champlain Bridge Corridor project highlights how we used our global expertise to bring an innovative approach to the procurement of a multi-billion-dollar infrastructure project in #Canada.
Our team gave expert technical advice to the Government of Canada to develop the replacement of the 3.4km bridge over the #StLawrenceRiver and seaway, and 4km of one of the busiest highway corridors in Canada, due for completion in 2019.
Leading a team of local and international architects we wanted to ensure the #design was unique, as well as sensitive to the needs of #Montreal. The result is a curved alignment and sculptural piers creating an instantly recognisable shore-to-shore design. The elegant main tower and its harp of cables add a unique accent to the bridge.
