All the hard work I had done before was ruined. My weight has been something I've always struggled with, thinking I needed to look a certain way to be happy. All I cared about was losing weight but have focused my attention on weightlifting. This year my training has improved so much and I'm getting stronger all the time, also the weight has been coming off gradually since the start of the year. Now I'm happy being fit, healthy and strong! πŸ’ͺπŸ’ͺπŸ’ͺπŸ’ͺπŸ’ͺπŸ’ͺ I have lost that stone ive put on and this time its not coming back! I do still have some more weight to lose but I now accept that it will come off in time. The key is slow and steady which has taken a while for me to accept. Novice Gains When people start going to the gym, and they’ve finally overcome the struggle of turning training into a habit, life seems pretty easy. You go in, you train the exercises you like and you’re good at, you do some full body stuff, and the pounds seem to drop off and you keep hitting new PB’s weekly. This is a fantastic time for any novice gym goer or lifter, but the bad news is that these gains are limited. Also referred to as β€˜Novice gains’ the body starts to adapt to the stresses placed upon it, both physically and neurologically, and you get stronger, fitter, leaner. This will probably last you up to around about 3 months before you start to notice a decline in your progress, whether it’s that the weight loss has stalled, or your strength gains have slowed down and you are unable to add kgs to the bar in every session. This is when you need to mix things up. How do we mix things up you ask? Well, you can make it as simple or as complex as you like, but long story short, you need to increase the volume OR the intensity of a given training session. Linear progression is when you are able to add reps and/or weight to the bar in pretty much every session. This approach can still work, but there has to be some structure to it. You also need to take into account fatigue management and adequate rest per muscle group. The key to progress is to ensure that the steps you are taking from session to session are marginally more difficult, achievable, and measurable (training diary and progress tracking is a must). Embracing Failure Posting this for accountability. Here are my failed attempts from the Classics yesterday. Now, I have a choice here, I can either be angry at myself for missing those lifts (so close!) or I can take it as a lesson and analyse what happened. I didn’t squat the way I had been practising in training. I did’t think about my hip position or tension. I didn’t drive my knees forward. These are small details that make or break it for me, and now that I know, I can be prepared. The more I compete the more I realise that ANYTHING can happen on the platform. The squat is the lift I am most confident in, yesterday this backfired. But I know it’s not my strength or my capability as a lifter, simply too many variables going on and going wrong at the same time. So squat wise, I fucked up. I have done an easy 112.5kg in comp before and it was purely due to me losing my head in the moment. I got distracted and fucked up, noone to blame but me, set up went out of the window and they turned into pure yolo squats. I’ve learnt that nothing bad really happens after failing a lift you know your good at, noone dies, you just feel disappointed. Naturally. But I know I have it in me so stay tuned because I will PB my squat in the gym this week πŸ˜‰ mark my words. - . .
