"Why does my mind circle around you? Why do planets wonder what it would be like to be you? "The halcyon settled on the Aire of our days. Kingfisher-blue it broke my heart in two. Shall I forget you? Shall I forget you?" * (The Kingdom of My Heart by Barry Tebb, from Bridge over the Aire, 2000) Another piece in the Leake Street Tunnel. Going by the #SkyHigh hashtag it seems to be the work of @5kyh1gh but this one isn't on their page. #TheKingdomOfMyHeart, #BarryTebb, #BridgeOverTheAire #kingfisher, #halcyondays, #heartbreak, #forgetyou, #love, #breakup, #sg, #poemquote #graffiti, #illegal, #permitted, #tolerance, #colour, #art #LeakeStreet, #BanksyTunnel #Lambeth, #London, #UnitedKingdom

"Twenty-first. Night. Monday. Silhouette of the capitol in darkness. Some good-for-nothing -- who knows why -- made up the tale that love exists on earth." * (Twenty-First. Night. Monday by Anna Akhmatova, possibly from 1985) I had hoped to get a shot of the sun going down through the London Eye and maybe get the silhouette bathed in golden light, but arrived too late and could only get this pseudo-silhouette. The wheel isn't going anywhere so there will be other opportunities. The London Eye isn't the city's first record-breaking big wheel. London used to be home to The Great Wheel in Earl's Court, what was the world's tallest Ferris Wheel from 1895 until 1900. It stood about 40m (140ft) shorter than The London Eye and was demolished in 1907. #TwentyFirstNightMonday, #AnnaAkhmatova #Russianpoet, #silhouette, #love, #existence, #lie, #sg, #poemquote #TheLondonEye, #Lambeth, #London, #UnitedKingdom, #TheThames, #SouthBank #landmark, #londoneye, #ferriswheel, #attraction, #bigwheel at The Official London Eye

"Obsidian. Sturgeon. Infatuated angels. Which only we can translate into flesh. The language to which we alone are native. Our own bait. We are spirits housed in meat..." * (Angelus, from Monolithos, Poems 1962 and 1982 by Jack Gilbert) These lamps along the banks of the Thames depict a pair of sturgeons, but are called 'dolphin lamps' because their creator, George John Vulliamy, was inspired by the dolphin statues at the Fontana del Nettuno in Rome. The originals were only found along the northern side, the Victoria Embankment, but replicas were created to line the Albert Embankment on the south side for Queen Elizabeth II's Silver Jubilee. #Angelus, #Monolithos, #JackGilbert #lamp, #dolphinlamp, #sturgeon, #statue, #replica, #river, #fish, #BigBen, #sg, #poemquote #Lambeth, #UK, #London, #SouthBank at South Bank London

"'I long for my children, but I have to wait To act too soon could seal their fate!' They made a vow, their mother will be found. Sonic Underground!" * (Sonic Underground, 1999) Sonic Underground was a short-lived series where Sonic and his two siblings led a resistance and were also in a rock band. This piece by @nziegram is in the Leake Street Tunnel, so it's Sonic... underground. “The Ferris wheel carried its passengers high and brought them low and raised them high and brought them low again, as if it were not merely a carnival ride but also a metaphor for the basic pattern of human experience.” * (Saint Odd by Dean Koontz, 2015) Standing 135 metres tall, The London Eye was the tallest Ferris wheel in the world when it opened in 2000. It is now the fourth (though still the tallest in Europe). It offered the highest public viewing point in London until the opening of The Shard's observation deck in 2013. #OddThomas, #SaintOdd, #DeanKoontz #humannature, #humanexperience, #lifecycle, #life, #metaphor, #sg, #bookquote #TheLondonEye, #Lambeth, #London, #UnitedKingdom, #TheThames, #SouthBank #landmark, #ferriswheel, #attraction, #bigwheel at The Official London Eye

"I rebel — therefore we exist." * (The Rebel by Albert Camus, 1951) At the Leake Street Tunnel there's a big sign letting people know that it's an authorised graffiti area. "Hope is a Ferris wheel – It takes you Low and High; And when you reach the Top, It’s like you can touch The Sky! And when it takes you Down – Hope becomes A Thing That, When you’re getting Off, You take With you to Bring." - Star Mackie * (Hope Is a Ferris Wheel by Robin Herrera, 2014) The Southbank Centre started life as the 'Festival of Britain' in 1951, intended by the governing Labour Party to demonstrate a hopeful future for Britain as it recovered from World War 2. The festival barely lasted a year under Winston Churchill's re-elected Conservative government. #StarMackie, #HopeIsAFerrisWheel, #RobinHerrera #hope, #recovery, #ferriswheel, #sky, #history #poemquote, #bookquote #London, #SouthbankCentre, #Lambeth, #LondonEye, #landmark, #UK at Southbank Centre

"Imagine a city where graffiti wasn't illegal, a city where everybody could draw whatever they liked. Where every street was awash with a million colours and little phrases. Where standing at a bus stop was never boring. A city that felt like a party where everyone was invited, not just the estate agents and barons of big business. Imagine a city like that and stop leaning against the wall - it's wet." - Banksy * (Wall and Piece) The Leake Street tunnel is a small glimpse of Banky's vision (and is sometimes called 'The Banksy Tunnel'), where graffiti is tolerated. "I toasted the carnivals we never went to and the things you never won for me the ferris wheels we never kissed on and all the dreams between us that sat there like balloons on a carney's board waiting to explode with passion but slowly deflated." * (I Knew It Was Over by Daphne Gottlieb, from the collection Final Girl, 2003) It is said that the eye is the window to the soul. "On the highest throne in the world, we still sit only on our own bottom." - Michel de Montaigne * (From The Complete Essays by Michel de Montaigne, 1572) I've upgraded my personal throne with an Icon from @noblechairs, seeing as I spend 99% of my waking time on it. "A miniature Adam and Eve find themselves reborn as an eighteen foot überkinder; they remain only a suggestion of their former selves, almost sweetly deformed and just to the point of abstraction. These darling figures teeter between portraits of childlike purity and a Garden of Eden gone terribly wrong.” * (From the press release when the installation originally went on display, 2010) Paul McCarthy's 'Apple Tree Boy Apple Tree Girl' sculptures have been around the world. "Of the ten tallest buildings in the world in 1890, I think there was only one that was not a church. And that was the Great Pyramid at Giza ... But twenty years later? There was not one church left in the world's tallest buildings." - Kathleen Sandwell * (Rising Stories by Don LePan, 2015) When you walk around London your eye can't help but be drawn to the buildings that tower around you, especially the more distinctive ones like The Gherkin or The Shard. Then you'll see that there's a little church sitting in its shadow. The church at the bottom of the photo is St Andrew Undershaft. It's... a little shorter than The Gherkin (which, yes, is officially named 30 St Mary Axe). #Kathleen Sandwell, #RisingStories, #DonLePan #church, #skyscraper, #tallestbuildings, #bookquote #StMaryAxe, #StAndrewUndershaft, #TheGherkin, #SwissReBuilding, #London, #UnitedKingdom at St Andrew Undershaft

"I wonder if the snow loves the trees and fields, that it kisses them so gently? And then it covers them up snug, you know, with a white quilt; and perhaps it says, 'Go to sleep, darlings, till the summer comes again.'" - Alice * (Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There by Lewis Carroll, 1871) The UK was only subject to a short kiss from the snow this week, but sometimes a short kiss is enough. #LewisCarroll #CharlesLutwidgeDodgson, #ThroughTheLookingGlass, #Alice#snow, #love, #kiss, #cover, #snug, #sleep, #rest, #wait, #bookquote #Ware, #England, #Britain, #UnitedKingdom, #UK, #Hertfordshire at Ware, Hertfordshire
