Do you know what’s inside this giant “beach ball”?... A passageway that connects the two hotels!▪️Looking to expand, the owners of the Betsy Hotel, a stately, sedate Colonial-style anomaly on the funhouse strip of Ocean Drive, reached across the alley at the back and bought the Carlton, a ’30s Collins Avenue hotel by an Art Deco master that had gone to seed.
Then, after a gut renovation of the Carlton and a congruously up-to-date extension, they joined the two hotels’ dissimilar styles with an architectural pièce de résistance that they call “The Orb”. ▪️ Wedged between the two buildings like a giant white beach ball, four stories up in the air, The Orb conceals a passageway that seamlessly connects the Betsy with the revitalized Carlton. at Miami Beach, Florida
Two of my favorites here: The Ol’ Blue Eyes painted by the inimitable Eduardo Kobra @kobrastreetart ▪️ Eduardo Kobra, the world-famous Brazilian artist was born in 1975 in Jardim Martinica.
What began as an act of vandalism during his adolescence, his passion for art led Eduardo to become KOBRA: one of the most respected artists of his time.
Over the past 30 years, Kobra has worked tirelessly to master his craft and created over 500 monumental murals around the globe. These murals can be readily seen in over 40 countries, on 5 continents and in countless cities including Spain, Italy, Norway, England, Malawi, India, Japan, United Arab Emirates, New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Miami.▪️This portrait of Frank Sinatra is part of “Larger Than Life” exhibit at GGA Gallery in Miami (it’s already been sold - alas, not to me, but the exhibit is on view until July 1).▪️See a great self-portrait that Eduardo Kobra painted in Columbus, Ohio in @occasionally.in.ohio ‘s gallery at Wynwood Walls & Art District, Miami

Wynwood Garage: facade designed by FAULDERS STUDIO. With a non-repeating pattern across the entire façade, FAULDERS STUDIO uses geometric shape-shifting to perceptually alter the visual scale of the building. Delineated outlines are more expansive higher up, and address visual registration from a distance. At closer proximities the façade’s pattern blends with the urban texture of the neighborhood; and nearer to street level, focused areas of articulation guide the eye downward to pedestrian street activities. The result is a loose-fit relationship that intentionally contrasts with interior floor levels, and reinforces the ubiquitous misalignment between painted shell and contained functionality found throughout Wynwood’s architecture. #addicted_to_facades ▪️Photo 2: across the street from the Garage and impending storm. #streetviews at Wynwood Walls & Art District, Miami
