Have you ever been to Yosemite, what do you think about it? Yosemite is one of my favorite places on the planet. It's a gorgeous national park and it's a place that I've spent a lot of time in over the course of my life - especially when I was younger and growing up. Oddly enough, I haven't photographed it a lot because I've avoided going to the park as I've gotten older because it tends to get really crowded. Right now Yosemite is getting dumped on by a big storm, the park should get several feet of snow over the next couple days. Tomorrow I'm going to head up and spend a few days in the park enjoying the fresh snow and the beauty of Yosemite in the winter time. If you haven't had a chance to visit Yosemite when it's covered with snow, you really should treat yourself and make it happen! Originally I was planning on going up around this time of the year to try to catch a glimpse of the modern day fire fall (horsetail falls lighting up during a small window of the year making it look like the waterfall is made of fire). I've tried to capture if a few times, but each time I've tried the conditions haven't worked out and cloud cover has kept the falls from lighting up. I planned this little road trip last minute, and I hope to get lucky and experience a range of conditions. Fingers crossed I get to shoot while it's dumping with snow, and I also hope an evening or two will bring a break in the clouds and I can get a chance to create a fire fall image. It seemed like a lot of you really enjoyed the Kolmanskop shot from a couple days ago - so here's another one! This one, and the shot from a couple days ago are both new ones from me. I had a few others from Kolmanskop that I posted up a long time ago, but then I forgot to go back and dig in to my files and work on more. When I visited, I had the place to myself twice. Late in the evening, and then again early in the morning before small groups of tourists started to arrive for the day. Both times were great, this shot was from the morning session. The light bounces around from one room to the next and if you find the right angle, you can see really cool scenes like this where the warm light from outside starts filtering in through various openings and bounces around from one room to the next, flooding into a cold, dimly lit space. Take a look at a doorway / door that's nearby right now. Can you imagine sand piled half way up the walls, doorway, and door? It's a pretty unique scene to take in! Who would like to visit this place and learn about the crazy history associated with it and take some cool photos? I knew as soon as I started going back and looking at wildlife shots and posting them up a little over a week ago that I was going to end up diving back into a lot of my Africa shots and I did! Let's keep the Namibia theme going here with a new shot of mine from Kolmanskop. I really enjoyed exploring this small, desolate, history-rich town in the southern part of Namibia. I would have loved to see this town in action during the height of its existence. There was a lot of ingenuity, struggle, enjoyment & shenanigans that came along with living in relative isolation during a time of economic prosperity from a diamond mining boom. Now all we have left to see is a ghost town being swallowed up by the desert. Does anyone else enjoy running down the sides of sand dunes as much as I do? Hiking up the dunes - especially some of the world's tallest in Namibia can definitely make your legs burn a bit. It's the running, jumping, cascading down the soft sides that makes it all worth it in the end! Well that, and getting to take in the views from the top and take photos of light like this that makes the dunes look spectacular. It's amazing what you can create with a little bit of sand (ok a lot of sand!) and a little bit of light! I love it when I'm around sand dunes and catch the dramatic light early or late in the day, especially on the ridges or rims of the dunes. ***This is a pano, swipe through to see the whole image - crank your brightness up!*** Trial and error - it’s how you learn, it’s how you grow, it’s how you get better at things. This applies to photography and just about everything else in life. I haven’t shot a ton of astrophotography, but I do enjoy it on the rare occasions that I do. Last May, I was in Namibia and I felt motivated to try capturing a few night shots of the quiver trees under the stars. I had played around with shooting some astro a little bit before, but only 2 or 3 times total maybe. Basically, I knew roughly what I needed to do to capture images at night, but I hadn’t really practiced it and I definitely hadn’t learned all of the little tricks along the way. This was the first time I ever tried to shoot a pano at night under the stars. I made a lot of mistakes, but they are mistakes I can easily fix next time. When I processed the image I was picking apart the different spots where I made mistakes; notice those blurry stars at the top of the image near the center? That’s because at the focal length I was shooting at - 16mm, I shouldn’t have used 30 second exposures. I really shouldn’t have gone beyond 20 seconds to make sure those stars were sharp, and not blurry. But these are little things you pick up as you practice, as you try, and as you make mistakes. I get a lot of DM’s from other photographers asking questions about photography. Please feel free to keep asking away, I’d love to help out with everything I get a chance to answer. If you’re working on improving your photography, keep asking questions. Better yet, keep practicing. Find images that you like, then go shoot and see if you can get a little closer to getting your images to look like the ones that inspire you to go shoot in the first place. Scour the web for free info, go purchase tutorials and register for workshops/tours from photographers that have already made those mistakes, learned from them and perfected their craft. What mistakes have you made and learned from? Capture Info: Sony a7RIII + Sony 16-35 GM Pano created from 9 stitched images shot at: f/2.8, 30 seconds, 16mm, ISO 1600 at Namibia

When I create a black and white image, it's usually intentional from the time I take the shot. Certain scenes lend themselves well to B&W, and I'll generally think about how I'm going to process the shot in B&W as I'm taking it, and I'll make some adjustments and shoot slightly differently than I would if I was planning on leaving the shot in color. What do you think, does the B&W work well on this shot for you? I could sit and watch Elephants all day long. When I visit Africa and we come across eles, no matter how many I've seen in my life, on that trip, or on that specific game drive, I always want to see more. I love seeing the way they move, interact with each other and explore. Have you seen a wild Elephant in person? Drop a comment below and let me know how you enjoyed it! It seems like everyone has been enjoying the wildlife shots the last couple of days so let's keep that train rolling! I think one of the most interesting parts of going on safari in Africa is learning about the habits of these truly wild animals. Searching out, finding, and observing something like this - a Leopard in the wilderness of a UNESCO World Heritage Site like the Okavango Delta is a really unbelievable experience. No matter how many times you do it, it never gets old, tired or boring. That's because each time is much different from the previous. For example, two posts ago I put up another Leopard shot. That was from a different area, and the sighting and experience were very different. That first Leopard was relaxing and sunning itself, this second was much more alert. This Leopard pictured here is a 10 month old cub. He was hanging out in a pretty thick bush area with his mother nearby. After sitting with him for nearly an hour, we discovered he and his mother had recently eaten and were on high alert protecting their remaining food. We first noticed an Impala leg hanging from the higher branches of a nearby tree and then later found the rest of the carcass below that tree as we circled around. It may sound gross, or morbid, but when you're experiencing nature like this it takes on a different feeling. Have you ever witnessed something very genuine, very natural, very raw in nature somewhere? Tell me about it below! If you could go somewhere tomorrow, anywhere (forget responsibilities or financial constraints) where would you go? Drop a comment and let me know! For me, it would definitely be Africa and a mix of Botswana, South Africa and Namibia. This lioness you see here was in Botswana. Botswana is one of my favorite destinations that I've ever been to. The quality of the game viewing, the amazing beautiful scenery and absolutely wonderful people make it a can't miss destination that needs to be on your bucket list. I experienced this sighting in the Okavango Delta on the Khwai Private Reserve. The sightings there were just unbelievable, as was the hospitality and experience of staying on the reserve. For me, the itch to go to Africa never goes away, but every time I post up a photo from Africa or look through photos the itch gets even stronger, I'm ready to go right now! Leopards are one of my favorite animals to seek out and watch in the wild. I was lucky to have the chance to go look for them in one of the best places to have these types of encounters - at the Sabi Sands game reserve just outside of Kruger. We spotted this beauty on an early morning game drive. This leopard was relaxing on top of a giant ant hill taking in the morning sun and keeping an eye on us as we came by for a visit. Would an African Safari be high on your travel bucket list? Let me know in the comments! Here's another shot of that really great looking scene that I posted up yesterday. This was all from Thursday night. Yesterday's shot was from the end of the shoot - the twilight scene. Today's is from just slightly before. Seeing snow covered peaks light up like this is something I usually only expect to see out in nature, in the middle of nowhere, in national parks, basically anywhere that's not a big city like this. The light was absolutely fantastic because of the storm that rolled through earlier in the day and the day before. I shot a bunch from a variety of different angles so I'd have some options to choose from. So what do you think so far, do you like today's post or yesterday's post better? One more coming up tomorrow - it'll be a pano that was taken slightly earlier than this one with great light on the downtown cluster and peaks! There aren't many days of the year that you get to see LA like this. In fact, if you didn't know your skylines and just took a quick glance at the photo, you might not even think LA at first, you might think of another city that you associate more with snow capped mountains instead! I've seen shots of the LA skyline with fresh snow on the San Gabriel mountains before and every time I see it I remind my self that I need to remember to go take the shot after a storm. After a storm blows through, the air gets cleared up and the visibility is great, and this one happened to dump a bunch of fresh snow on the mountains as a bonus. Up until yesterday I hadn't remembered to go shoot the scene after a storm and I was honestly on my way to the beach then changed my mind and decided to take a chance hoping this would work out. I have a bunch of different shots to process from the shoot. The light was great as the sun went down, this was one of the last shots I took after the sun was gone and twilight was kicking in. Today's post was shot just before yesterday's post, that's why you might be thinking it looks similar! As I mentioned yesterday, the sky was set to blow up and I crossed my fingers and hoped for the best as I sent the drone up. This shot is from a slightly different spot than the one I posted up yesterday even though you'll see some of the same scene. I took multiple shots here and created a vertorama because I wanted to show more of the sky since it was just absolutely incredible. Which shot do you like better, today's or yesterday's? Last night was one of those "will it or won't it" situations again with the sunset. The clouds were there, the thickness seemed pretty good, the setup seemed pretty good, we just needed that little sliver on the horizon. I wanted to capture it from the air, so I got the drone ready and headed out. As you can see...it went off! I love flying drones and taking photos with them. Flying is fun in itself, and getting these views from up in the sky is just a hell of a lot of fun, and really interesting! Drones have gotten so advanced and so much better over the last few years. The quality of the sensors in most still leave a little to be desired compared to using my other gear, but when you consider that you can put this camera pretty much anywhere you want, it's really amazing to realize the kind of quality that we can get from drones these days. Do you enjoy aerial shots? Drop a comment and let me know! Capture Info: DJI Mavic Pro 2 2 shots blended for dynamic range @polarpro 5 stop GND used Both shots were at f/8, ISO 100.
