Happy Birthday ‘Merica #4thofjuly #unicorn #independenceday
From my large format light painting series. Large format slide film (cross-processed). Large spot lights on unlit buildings. This is the old Michigan Theatre in Detroit. In its heyday it was a gorgeous theatre. Now it’s a parking structure. It served as a location in Eminem’s film 8 Mile. #michigantheater #largeformatphotography #crossprocess #detroit #dominicphotography
Lots of activities here at the #michigancentralstation in Detroit this week with Ford having purchased it. I made this image in the early 2000’s. As an abandoned building then it was unlit and I wanted to make some night exposures using a technique called light painting. Open the shutter on a large format 4x5 camera, use a couple million candle power spotlights to “paint” the building where I want illumination, close the shutter. Viola. Light painting. #detroittrainstation #dominicphotography #detroit #lightpainting #itsabandoned
Making songs on my Daddy’s porch on a cool northern Michigan night. Funny how when you’re young you want to fly the coop as soon as you can and then, you grow up and coming back to the coop is the most relaxing thing in the world. #gretschguitars #resonatorguitar #dominicphotography #happyfathersday #acousticguitar #guitar
The old Michigan Central Station in Detroit. It’s been abandoned since the ‘80s but Ford recently bought it. Somewhere in the early 2000’s I snuck a 4x5 film camera in there and made a bunch of exposures. From an upper floor we later watched the cops haul away some other trespassers. The building was a location for Transformers and a bunch of other movies during the Michigan film boom. I snuck in one other time but will always treasure making photographs in this building with camera technology from the era it was built. #largeformatphotography #filmphotography #detroitcentralstation #detroittrainstation #dominicphotography #itsabandoned #detroit at Detroit, Michigan
It’s been a week and I’ve been having a hard time with this one. No words can express my joy. Not sure I’m ready for the next part. #graduation #victors2022 #prouddad #dominicphotography #canon7d
Even those who outwardly seem to have it all sometimes need more help than you can imagine. You may not understand it and that’s okay. Just pledge to be there for them when they ask for help. Day or night, friend or stranger, I am here. #iamhere
When I first reached the summit of Mt. Hood and caught my breath, I was in awe of how the morning sun cast a perfect cartoon mountain shape on the land below. All the detail of this rock formation to go around, this bergshrung to avoid, this slope to hump, made me focus on the details, each step to get to the top and I lost the whole picture, until I got there, and took a breath. “Plans are deliberately indefinite, more to travel than to arrive anywhere” -Robert M. Hard to believe that this little guy turned 16 today. Kind, caring, smart, goofy... I couldn’t be more proud to call him my son. @grant_theoneandonly
Last one from the “Welcome Home Honey” series. The shoot was even sketchier than it looks but well worth the effort. #fashion #detroit #dominicphotography #ddominicjr #canonphotography #canon5dmarkii #dinner #bbq model: Shannon Priest styling: @ajohnnyy Head of Security and taking a dump in an abandoned building: @suicidemachinesdetroit ‘s own Rich Tschirart.

I stumbled on this location while working on a movie in Detroit. It was part of the old Brewster’s project which has since been razed. I had this concept that had been floating in my mind for awhile and the location along with the clothing brought by Angie and Shannon’s presence pulled it all together better than I had hoped for. Mom. This was taken by me in 1979 at 9 years old. It was my first camera. My mother was big into photography then, still is. I’m sure I begged for the camera and somehow she made it happen. It was a Kodak and shot 126 film cartridges. Somehow she found the money to develop my film too, mostly pictures of my dog, Feather. Mom did a lot for me as most mothers do. When I asked for a motorcycle, she bought me a horse (not what I expected). She played catch with me all the time, softball was her sport. She’s always been there and when I ran off she was always waiting for me to come back. That has never wavered. I’m sure she was worried when I went through my divorce and entered a dark period. But I always felt her there and when I came back, there she was, waiting and willing to help with the band-aids. She’s my mom and I wouldn’t want it any other way. Love you Mom. #mothersday #dominicphotography
Kill your television. Kill your phone for that matter too. My new intern laughed at me for reading a physical newspaper yesterday. Where is the pleasure in reading a headline and one paragraph on a phone? Where is the pleasure in slamming an energy drink instead of getting a good night of sleep and sipping on a morning cup of coffee or tea. Skim everything. Know nothing. That’s where we are in society. Take some time. Relax. Just be. Do it right. The downtime you take, the time you spend diving deep at a relaxed pace, it will all pay off when crunch time comes. #killyourtelevision #dominicphotography #canon5dmarkii #stockings #redpumps #canonphotography #ddominicjr Model: Shannon Priest. #nofilter Made this old school with film and a toy camera. I have this bi-polar draw to both the city and the wild as if you can’t tell from my posts. I grew up in the wild for the most part and went to uni in the city and have lived in the concrete jungle until this past year. This shot came from my first trip to L.A. for Coachella. Shot on film through a toy camera out the window of my rental on the way through an intersection. I’m honestly surprised I even captured this and honestly it’s not super special because I’m sure hundreds of photos have been taken of this sign. But, it’s mine. The color of the Fuji film, the light leaks and lense blur of the Holga plastic camera, the light of day, all add to my feeling of wonder, curiosity, joy, anticipation, of my first time in this oddly mystical town. Cue #bigdandthekidstable because I always start singing L.A.X. when I see this sign. #fujifilm #holga #lax #dominicphotography #ddominicjr #coachella at LAX
People watching is a favorite past time. Wondering who they are, what they do, what they’re thinking. It took me years to start looking people in the eye (that weren’t performing) and ask them for a photo. During those years I sniped photos, capturing unguarded moments. Hot and tired, I found this cowboy (I doubt he really was, why did he chose that hat that day, was it simply for sun protection, or was it part of his vibe...) taking a break at #coachella 2004 along with a bunch of other festival goers, including me. #holga120 #filmphotography #dominicphotography at Coachella, California
Since it’s Coachella week, this is one from Coachella 2004 when it was one weekend long and I knew most of the bands. It was pre-cell phone camera days. I was supposed to get in on a photo pass with the Electric 6 but they were late from a gig in North Cali somewhere. I bought a ticket and in my bag I snuck in three cameras, a 35mm, a Holga, and a Polaroid. Probably can’t do that these days. My main goal was the Pixies reunion. I ended up seeing them 5 times that year across the country. The whole trip was a strange and incredible experience for my first trip to L.A. From Hollywood to watching surfers in Newport, spending the night in Billy Howerdel’s house (whom I’ve still never met), sleeping in my rental car a night, washing in the sink at a Denny’s, enjoying a dinner looking on the ocean, Venice Beach, everything was what I had hoped and more. #35mmfilm #coachella #pixies #dominicphotography #ddominicjr #canonae1 at Coachella, California
Here he is at nine, in the same location as the other photo. Wonder and joy. I love the lad he is now and I miss that little boy. I often wake from dreams hearing his little voice say “Dad”. Now I hear the 16-year-old voice, I love it too, and I can still hear the little boy in there. #growingup #birds #bird #son
