We can't always control what's going to happen to us: late train, delayed tube, late cancellations... Likewise we won't always be in total control of what we eat. What if the store doesn't have what you want? You've gone to a friend's and they haven't cooked you that macro-friendly meal you wanted?! Many factors can influence our daily life but ultimately, you can control how you react to these situations. Sure it's frustrating, but what help is getting angry and shouting if the train is late going to do to help you or the situation? You can't get that particular brand of rice you wanted for dinner? Find an alternative. Your favourite spot in the gym is taken? Do a different exercise then come back or try out something new. Tube is delayed? Walk to the next station and try there. Someone takes the time to cook for you? Enjoy the meal! And thank them for taking the time to prepare and cook it. This actually shouldn't be a no-brainer but you'll be surprised! Taking control and the initiative is especially important if your in a role of responsibility. If your seen to panic during a moment of crisis, how is that going to look to those your leading and make them feel? That panic will soon spread and the situation will become ten times worse. How you conduct yourself and respond to situations outside of your control will tell you more about your character then any Internet questionnaire will. So, take a deep breath, look at the situation and then see what you can control and put yourself back in charge. And if you are in a position of responsibility? Then lead by example. Stop making excuses as to why you can't be fit and healthy. We all have challenges we need to deal with. For me, anxiety , depression, binge eating... All valid and serious reasons why I sometimes struggle with my weight, like many do, and all area's that still don't get the care and widespread help and attention they need. But also, I sometimes just have to hold my hands up, be honest and ask: how much do I really want it? Its easy to look for excuses like I have here but sometimes you need to look deeper into yourself to see what else may be holding you back. Is it a confidence issue, a lack of motivation? All are valid reasons but with some people they simply don't care and just look for excuses. Which is fine but be honest - lie to yourself and you'll find it easy to lie to others. I was going to say this post has nothing to do with health and fitness, but... The films 300 and Casino Royal were two films that really got me interested in taking more care of myself, in both how I perform and how I feel/look. Sounds corny I know, but we all need something somewhere to help inspire us to push ourselves beyond our own self-perceived limits. And if that happens to be a film? Then so be it. Carbs aren't the devil - some do great without them, some do better with them. Experiment and find out what works best for you. Just because your favourite Instagram guru tells you not to eat carbs, doesn't mean you have to listen. Everybody is different and different things work for different people. For many, starchy carbohydrates are an excellent form of fuel and a simple carb like a banana can help post workout. Some people will save their carbs for the end of the day, as they will help to release serotonin which can help you to relax and even fall asleep quicker. Again, experiment and see what works for you. If your going to be doing a workout routine of some kind, either at home or at the gym, I personally would have carbs but again it's down to preference. If someone tells you that you have to eat this and that you can't eat that, then walk away. You probably want and need some flexibility, to make it sustainable but also enjoyable and not a chore. It's very easy to feel sorry for ourselves when things aren't going how we want them to be, but it's how we come back and keep on fighting that defines us and builds our character. We all have bad moments, either through no fault of our own or self inflicted and it's very easy to then feel sorry for ourselves. If we let every setback get to us then we would never progress or evolve and we would just stay at the same level, complaining about how unfair life is. I know, as I've done this many times. Whenever my mental health is particularly bad, I end up binge eating. Yeah, I can't do much about my anxiety/depression, their always going to be there. But I can chose how I respond/deal with it. Don't play the victim. Be strong, take control and lead by example. When you catch yourself in the mirror and think "that's not a bad outfit..." 😂 Nutrition and exercise aren't the only things I try to keep simple. Like most things in life, if you overcomplicate or overthink something then it's not going to do you much good and will just confuse the issue. I know that some of my anxiety is down to these very issues so for me, I try to keep things as simple as possible. Does it always work? No. But hopefully the more I do it then the easier it will become. Have a simple base/structure to start with: that could be a loved one, friends, family, even your nutrition and then build yourself upwards. If something becomes too complicated and starts to take up too much of your time, take a step back and reevaluate. When losing weight, some nutritionists, trainers and health coaches will put you on a severely restricted diet, which will make you resent the process even more. Can you never eat a doughnut again? Course you can! But just be sensible. Stick to the 90/10 rule: 90% of the time eat wholesome, Earth grown, natural whole foods full of vitamins, minerals and nutrients that are the building blocks of life and what your body is craving for. This is probably the simplest workout routine you'll see today. Will it be easy? No. But this takes away all the worrying about multiple exercises and different routines. Rather then overcomplicating things, keep it simple: focusing on lifting heavy, sprinting in short bursts and walking long distances will do you plenty of good, both physically and emotionally. For the lefts, use the basics like deadlifts, squats, dips, chin/pull-up's, rows.. You get the idea. Don't get me wrong, I love the more in depth workouts and routines (check out @lauraliving_fit account for some great metcon/strength training routines that she's recently been posting) but for most, the above is a great place to start or even reset your fitness journey. I'll do a follow up post to make even this part of the routine as simple as possible. Use this as a foundation to build a good, strong solid level of fitness. Rather than eating better to lose weight, we buy diet pills. Rather then lifting weights, we buy body toners. When you buy your way to something, what are you learning? When you work towards a goal, you earn that end result and you feel a sense of achievement. And along the way, you learn about yourself: how hard you need to push, what's possible for you to achieve, what worked and didn't work. By bypassing all this, you learn nothing apart from the fleeting sense of success before you then have to find the next 'hit', the next thing to make you feel successful. When someone asks you how you achieved your goal, are you going to lie and recite something you heard somebody else said? Or are you going to tell them how you had to work hard and maybe make some sacrifices to get where you are and how you achieved your end goal? There's a lot of fitness accounts that will have you believe that they never eat anything that is classed as 'bad for you' and that everyday they eat 'perfect' food. And for those they do manage it, then fair play. But for many of us, that isn't sustainable. And the more we deprive ourselves, then the more we want that which we're denying ourselves. A friends girlfriend made this for us at work. Someone said to me can you have that? I said course I can, why not? They mentioned how it wasn't very healthy but to me, healthy is eating well 80% of the time and then allowing yourself an extra 20% so that you can enjoy foods that wouldn't normally be considered healthy. If it makes you feel good then have a piece of cake and enjoy it, just don't make a habit of it. One slice isn't going to derail all your hard work and you shouldn't be made to feel guilty about it either. Too often I see people trying to fit into a particular nutritional lifestyle, only for them to drop it a few weeks later. One of the reasons for this is that we try to fit our day round a dietary habit, rather than the other way around. So rather then it helping us, it ends up hindering us. Find a Paleo or Vegan diet too restrictive? Than don't do it. Does Intermittent Fasting leave you thinking constantly about food? Then move on. You should be able to go about your day normally: we already have enough things to worry about, without having to add a new set of food rules that the latest expert has told us to follow. If you wake up and don't feel naturally hungry? Then Intermittent Fasting would work for you and your lifestyle. Paleo works for you as you find grains can leave you bloated? Then that's great, you've found a way to eat that suits you and your daily routine. Don't try to follow a dietary pattern that is going to cause you food anxiety or some kind of stress. If something works for you then that's great and by all means share that with other people as you may end up helping them too. I'm a bit late to the recent popularity of Kombucha - I've tried it before but it's either been too sour or full of sugar. But this one actually doesn't taste that bad and doesn't have any added sugar. And this isn't a post to demonise sugar, but I know that plenty of people now look for sugar free drinks and there's more than enough sugar going around without adding to it. Would experts class it as 'proper' Kombucha? Probably not, but it's still got mostly natural ingredients and still has live cultures which are good for your stomach/gut. In case your unsure what it is: "Kombucha is a fermented drink made from sweetened tea and a specific culture known as a scoby. Scoby stands for ‘symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeasts’. The bacteria and yeasts convert the sugar into ethanol and acetic acid. The acetic acid is what gives kombucha its distinctive sour taste.
