Types of Practice – Slow Vinyasa Slow vinyasa is another contemporary style of yoga. These classes move slowly, allowing students time to appreciate each pose, before flowing to the next. Like its sister Power Vinyasa, Slow Vinyasa derives from Hatha. 8 tips to start a regular practice Over the summer our FFS Yoga teachers will be sharing tips on how to develop and sustain a long term practice — Tip #5 — Learn to self-practice. Starting to practice outside of classes is massively liberating. Once you feel like you know the basics you can begin moving at home. Finding 10 or 15 mins to practice a short sequence daily, along with a couple of classes, will have a much quicker effect on your body and mind and a single class each week. You can try a few poses, maybe focus on your breath for 5 mins, or take a restorative pose. Types of Practice – Hatha Hatha yoga is a traditional style of yoga, from which many modern styles are derived from. The Hatha Yoga Pradipika was compiled in the 15th Century, but references to Hatha Yoga date much earlier. A robust Hatha yoga practice extends well beyond being the sophisticated physical exercise system and integrates ideas of ethics, diet, cleansing, pranayama (breathing exercises), meditation and a system for spiritual development of the yogi. In a yoga class you can expect emphasis on learning the important basics of both postures and breath, so that you can safely progress. Some classes will have a theme (e.g. heart opening, back-bending) using a traditional sequence. Building a strong tummy / core Most disciplines of exercise and yoga agree that a strong core/centre/tummy is hugely important. Why? A strong core: - Reduces lower back pain - Improves posture - Improves balance & stability - Reduce risk of injury 3. Dog crunch. This is another popular movement in vinyasa classes. From downdog, lift your right leg high, and as you exhale bring your knee to your right elbow. You can pause here to intensify, then inhale back to 3-legged dog. Keep your hips high and tummy engaged. Repeat 5-10 times on each side. Managing upper body stiffness. Many of us work at desks and computers all day, and complain of stiffness in our upper body. Each week we’ll show you a couple of stretches and poses to help elevate specific discomforts. 1. Chest tightness. Sometimes shoulder tightness is caused by tight chest muscles/pecs. They can be easily overlooked during stretching. This first movement is excellent as specifically targeting the pecs. Stay 2 mins on each side, progressively relaxing into the stretch more and more. The second stretch is called reverse prayer, 3 options, each a little easier are demonstrated above. Try not to arch your back here.
