Reason 4: Yoga improves sleep Yoga improves sleep. Yoga isn’t just beneficial for improving core strength, flexibility, and stress levels; it can also help you sleep better—especially if you suffer from insomnia. When people who have insomnia perform yoga on a daily basis, they sleep for longer, fall asleep faster, and return to sleep more quickly if they wake up in the middle of the night. If you want to work yoga into your bedtime routine, it’s important to do the right kind. Some types of yoga can be energizing (e.g. vinyasa flow). Here are three poses that are ideal for preparing your body for sleep. • Legs Up the Wall: Lie on the ground on your back and put the back of your legs up a wall (keep your legs straight), so your body is in an L-shaped pose. • Reclined Butterfly: Lie on the ground on your back. Press the bottoms of your feet against each other and let your knees fall out to the sides. You can put a pillow under your knees if this feels too strenuous. • Corpse Pose: Lie on the ground on your back with legs straight, arms by sides, and palms facing up. Fabiana’s teacher bio Fabiana has formal training in Hatha, Ashtanga, Restorative, Trauma Sensitive Yoga, Yoga Nidra, & Children/Teen Yoga, and informal training with her mentor, Orla Punch in Iyengar Yoga and Senior/Remedial Yoga. Fabiana spent much of her teens disillusioned, lost and deeply curious about her spirituality. On her Mum’s recommendation she first tried Yoga nearly five years ago, then began playing with some poses at home and joining the odd class here in Dublin. It was after her first teacher training in India that Yoga became a daily discipline and integral part of her life. In those 2.5 years since, she has trained extensively while working on her teaching, but most importantly, her self-practice. Fabby is passionate about mental wellness, self-acceptance and body-positivity. She focuses on making yoga accessible, while challenging and always, deeply relaxing. She teaches Hatha, Vinyasa, Yoga for Sport & Restorative yoga with us. Some stress is good, but long-term unchecked stress can lead to a host of physical and mental illnesses. Yoga’s combination of breathing, mindful movement, meditation and relaxation mean that Yoga is excellent at reducing stress. Unlike other forms of exercise, Yoga has an underlying philosophy of self-compassion and awareness. An important concept in Yoga is non-judgment, to both ourselves and others. This is a powerful tool for stress relief as often stress grows from being tough on ourselves or irritated with others. Eva Du is a #FFSYoga teacher. She started practicing at 15 and has since trained in Hatha, Iyenger, Acro and Ashtanga. At the moment Eva is working on softening her own yoga practice through the study and application of Somatic inspired ‘Fluid Movement Technique’ with Dublin based teachers. After her first class at 15, she remembers being amazed at the feeling in her body after shavasana (relaxation). For the first time in her life she felt connected, and at ease. She felt that she’d rediscovered something so familiar, yet new to her in this life-time. There is a strong relationship between the position and control of the scapula (shoulder blade) and the shoulder joint itself. People who present with shoulder impingement issues will have changes in shoulder blade kinematics that differ from healthy patients. — We can develop the scapulohumeral rhythm (how the shoulder blade works in association with the arm) by actively mobilising the shoulder blade through Shoulder Abductions and Scapula Push Ups. — Aim for 3 sets x 12 repetitions for each exercise.
