What happens when you look at at beautiful mountain? Your pulse dops or does it hit the roof? Do you feel that your thoughts that perhaps flies around in your head like the speed of the particles in the CERN particle physics laboratory finally settles down, like covering your head with a cool blanket that smoothes your mind? Or do you just stand there in awe watching the clouds gently swipe across the mountaintop? And, which is this mountain in this photograph (too easy)? #mypassionsigma #bethard #winnersdaremore #lasportiva #marmot #smartwool #petzl

Can you spot us? Place: Bossons Glacier on the Grands Mulet route in 2015. Mountains teaches me minimalism. Minimalism not only brings me happiness, it's crucial for fighting climate change. Here are two inspiration for you. First the documentary Minimalism: A Documentary About the Important Things. Secondly selected lyrics from Eddie Vedder song Society: "When you want more than you have You think you need And when you think more than you want Your thoughts begin to bleed I think I need to find a bigger place 'Cause when you have more than you think You need more space Society, you're a crazy breed I hope you're not lonely without me Society, crazy and deep I hope you're not lonely without me" #minimalism #lessismore #wwf #greenpeace #mountainwisdom #eddivedder at Mont Blanc, Chamonix, France

Today is my birthday. Last year when I turned 40 I turned off my phone, no computer, stayed at my parent’s cottage and trained all day and tried to forget about all the birthday propaganda. Why? I’m not a birthday-loving-guy. Let me draw out my main thesis for you. In Tibet, few used to know when their birthday was. Instead it was more common to celebrate individual’s steps towards enlightenment, like when people grow spiritually and gain wisdom if you so like. I started to compare birthdays with lottery; disciplined hard work is not a prerequisite for winning lottery, luck determines if you win or lose hence I have not deserved to be celebrated just because of aging one year. I want to be celebrated for my hard work for growing in wisdom. I also understand now that celebrating birthdays dosen't necessary have to be so political. It’s just a thing where we can celebrate for no particular reason at all, which my beloved sister Ronja has taught me the last months. She always sent me beautiful postcards with beautiful cats on them (she loved cats) and wishing me a “happy birthday my beloved brother”. I will no longer receive birthday cards from my beloved sister Ronja. She left us 17th Oct last year. The pain has been unimaginable. The loss of my sister I still do not fully understand. I wish I could have shown her this side to of birthdays: celebrating for no particular reason at all and thanking her for remembering me, for maybe that is what it is about, remembering the people around us that we love. Thank you Ronja for the birthday wishes today! I will therefore become member of Greenpeace as a birthday gift from you. With love

Ernestas Marksaitis and I made an attempt in 2012 on Broad Peak. Too bad weather with me once going from BC to C-3 alone in up to waste deep snow was enough for me. I had it. I went back in 2017, and we had okay weather. But this time we could take turns in ploughing the way to what we thought was the summit. The weather had really poor visibility up there. Is this really the summit I though? The GPS said 8047 m but then again, GPS watches can be wrong. When I got back home Eberhard Jurgalski contacted me and we started comparing the pictures/video we had and we realised, damit, we were on a fore summit and not the main summit! The evidence was convincing. We were about 17 vertical meters off. I pulled back my claim of reaching the summit. No other climber abandoned their summit claim despite the obvious truth. You can lie to an entire world, but I recon you cannot lie to yourself. I believe in honesty and the truth. I don’t want to train 20 h/week devoting my life to climbing living in an illusion. If I suck I want to know it so I can improve myself. If I’m great than I want to know what makes me great so I can judge wither the compliment is justified or just cheesy words. If I climb to 8047 m altitude then I want to have the evidence that I have reached 8047 m end of line. Therefore, I’m going back to Broad Peak this summer. My third attempt. And this time I’ll try to stay off the poor visibility days (which are notorious in Karakorum). Can’t wait to get back! Annapurna North Face December 2015 at sunset. Throwback to the beauty and tranquility that this magnificent 8000m peak display yet how intimidating this hostile environment can feel. In all my comfort here in Sweden I try to put on my expedition glasses whenever I analye our busy society. Our future: Sudan, the world's last male northern white rhino is dead (CNN: But the effort to save the subspecies from extinction lives on). When humans first ventured out of Africa some 60,000 years ago we have succeeded perfectly at one skill. Slaughtering everything that comes in our way. "There’s new evidence that some of the large creatures that once roamed Australia – what scienitsts call Australia’s ancient megafauna – didn’t disappear due to climate change as had been proposed earlier. Instead, the evidence suggests that humans were the primary cause of these unique creatures’ sudden extinction some 45,000 years ago. Prior to that time, were 1,000-pound kangaroos in Australia, 2-ton wombats, 25-foot-long lizards, 400-pound flightless birds, 300-pound marsupial lions and Volkswagen-sized tortoises. After that time, those huge creatures had disappeared." by Deborah Byrd in EARTH | HUMAN WORLD. So here is my question: which FB feed do people like after they receive such horrific news? Does a sad emoji and "how can humans be so terrible" comments make it undone? Hence the last question: what do people do today, at this very moment to not improve themselves but our planet earth so that we can indirectly improve ourselves? I recycled today. Eat vegetarian food. Counting the miles driven by car so that I can climate compensate with myclimate.org. And I hope that this futile text can inspire others to. Than you mountains for teaching me. Amazing day at Ågelsjön/Norrköping when the headwall finally froze and we were able to lead this WI5ish ice safely. Thanks Fredrik Schlyter for the awesome pictures! Fredrik Schlyter is a legend in Norrköping who started his carrer just like many of the good boys did back in the days by manufacturing their own equipment testing what worked and did not to climbing Trango Tower in Pakistan and soloing the iconic Trollveggen big wall in Norway among other things. Now he takes great photos so if you need a photographer don't hesitate to contact him! Thanks also to my climbing partner Oscar Krumlinde for a fun day! https://www.instagram.com/schlyter_photographer/— at Fredrik Schlyter Photography #lasportiva #petzl #climbing #iceclimbing #sigmatechnology #bethard #wdm #nomic #ågelsjön #c2safety #granitbiten #accesstheinaccessible #outsideonline #utemagasinet #bergsport @schlyter_photographer at Ågelsjön

Lapses in my backyard. Life is great! And here is a paradox beyond comprehension for you: I call it the invalid-Stockholm-syndrome. Basically the term applies to a person (from Stockholm, who lives in Stockholm) who has absolutely no complaints during nov-feb (when our metrological institute reports sometimes an average of 4 sunlight hours/month, constant overcast and rain) and then suddenly like a lightning form clear sky, when 1 foot of champagne fresh powder comes form our heaven and paint our capital bright and beautifully, a bright sun in the sky giving us our most necessary vitamin D and anti-depression elixir and turns muddy/slushy streets into dry white carpets, then, THEN these beings start complaining. THEN the newspapers start reporting "hold on, soon spring is coming". Ever cited "what's wrong with this world?". Well, if people prefer 4 h sunlight/month, overcast and rain before what you are witnessing on these pictures, then, then please just bring on the zombie apocalypse because then I think our race is truly doomed... Life is not defined by the hours you spend washing your clothes, paying your bills, reading gossips and worrying about what to eat at night. It's defined by those magical moments when you should put the sofa on fire, throw out the fu-king TV out of the window and get your ass out there and start enjoying those small miracles that sometimes happens and contemplating about for instance "are there no snowflakes in the world that are exactly the same?" and listning to the silence and your breath. Full stop.
Enjoy your day :) #skiing #skimo #lasportiva #smartwool #enjoylife #lovewinter #lovesnow #training #fitness #interval #bethard #wdm at Stöten i Sälen

Most of the times I have noone to document my climbs so I need to be adaptable and creative. I remember some climbs 20 years ago when I was carrying around a 3 kg SLR camera, a fat lense + a 2 kg DV videocam that recorded on DV tapes. Today things are so much easier and not even fair in comparison. To get decent shots you only need patience, some artistic feeling and battery power :) To see some really cool self-made photography check out@robertjasperextremeclimber The route on this photos: unnamed M6/Rjukan #lasportiva #petzl #sigmatechnology #bethard #wdm #c2safety #smartwool #iceclimbing #climbing #mixedclimbing #selfie #wdm at Rjukan, Norway

I remember everything. The fresh smell from champagne crystal powder to the rotten moisture in sun soaked snow. The smell from metallic rocks on a frozen wall during the inferno that the sun creates at dawn to the muddy smell from lifting rocks when constructing a platform for my tent in basecamp. I remember everything. The speechless beauty from a moonlit K2 with the support from tiny little stars hanging like a curtain over his majesty to the last rays of light crossing the skyline of Broad Peak and splits it in 7 perfect laser beams before dusk. I remember everything. The tranquil silence on the steep slopes to camp 3 on the Abruzzi where your heartbeat sounds like a tornado and where you can drop a feather perfectly to the ground in a straight line to the hurricane winds that will test your true grit when the only thing that separates you and the beating outside in camp 3 on Broad Peak is a microscopic thin layer of ripstop nylon. I remember everything.
I want to remember everything.
I want to experience it all. Broad Peak photographed from K2 BC summer 2017.

I remember one of my first climbing lessons some 22 years back and I was told to move like I'm dancing up the wall. I have thought quite a bit about the metaphor over the years and there are few (if any) things in life that beats the feeling when you move effortlessly and smoothly as a cat on a granite wall, a frozen icefall or a giant 8000m peak. The state of "flow" does not adequately give this very much sought after state it's fair picture. When I am in this joyous state of ease and relaxation, even hard things feels light but most of all, fun! It's like there is a speaker inside of me that is echoing the same sentence over and over, "this is truly happening, I'm here and it's a bliss!". I have tried to create a foundation of tools to trigger this feeling over the years and one of those tools is, smile! Smile, sink down and mentally picture yourself like a out-of-body experience, where you can see you're self from above looking at the technique. Keep dancing up those walls folks :) Juvsöyla WI6 Rjukan Norway in perfect but too easy condition. #lasportiva #petzl #sigmatechnology #bethard #c2safety #granitbiten #smartwool #iceclimbing #dancing #peptalk #tips #lesson #flow #accesstheinaccessible #wdm at Rjukan, Norway
