It's a great feeling when you get a workout and think, "this is in my wheelhouse", and it can be an easy trend to only do workouts that make us feel this way. The problem with this is that we stay inside our abilities and we eventually stop seeing as much progress as we would perhaps like.⁠ ⁠ We need moments where we have to work at something outside of our abilities. It's not a bad thing. It's better than that. It's in fact great. ⁠ ⁠ It's often the workouts that feel the crappiest that make the most impact. In training, we will always hit obstacles, walls, and various problems along the way. How we react to it is crucial, and yet we often look at everything else before we get even consider this. ⁠ ⁠ There are some things we can influence, like how much effort we put in, how consistent we are or our discipline outside the gym. There are then things we can't always control, like if a foot strap suddenly rips halfway through a row, or if starts raining during a run.⁠ ⁠ What we ALWAYS have control over, is how we react to any given issue. The issues we enjoy, we see as challenges and opportunities, the issue we don't like we call problems. ⁠ ⁠ Before you do anything when you hit an obstacle, see how you can affect it with only your attitude. This thought comes up every time I hear a member look at someone performing some advanced movements, or lifting a heavy barbell and say out loud, "they made that look so easy!".⁠ ⁠ For the athletes who can do things like muscle-ups, toes to bar, heavy snatches, pistols and all the stuff that wows the crowd, I can guarantee that it didn't start that way. When we see these things in action, we are seeing the end results of rigorous practice. Have you ever walked away from something and thought to yourself, "I probably could have worked a bit harder", or shied away from a challenge because of its difficulty? ⁠ ⁠ The Stoics would say, "We suffer more in imagination than reality", and this often puts us off pushing ourselves that little bit harder.
