Padoli Govindan Anthithiriyan, a metal artist from Payyanur, lets us in on his secret to sculpting and casting the perfect bell metal idols.
As one of the earliest known methods of metal casting, it dates back to the times of Harappa and Mohenjo Daro period.
The process begins by shaping the of the desired design in wax models, which requires a lot of precision and focus. Once the wax figure is ready, it is layered with 4-5 layers of clay and left to dry over several days. This clay is then fired to create a terracotta mould, and the heat melts the wax out leaving behind a cavity. Molten metal is then poured in. Once cool, the terracotta is broken to reveal the cast metal.

“A craftsperson in any field must master his craft because our skill is our strength and identity,” believes Abdul Kalam, a Kilim carpet weaver from Mirzapur.
A word of Turkish origin, ‘Kilim’ is a flat weave where any shape, be it a rectangle or a curve, is created by weaving wool at a 90 degree angle. The wool is dyed by adding it to steaming water along with the finalised colour. Abdul believes that a rug’s design and quality and the weaver’s workmanship determines how long it will take to complete it.
Abdul also dreams of building a weaving centre to train the coming generations to become skilled weavers, and go on to create timeless Kilim masterpieces.
