Our latest inspiration for #transformationtuesday is Austrian artist VALIE EXPORT - VALIE EXPORT created her photographs ‘Identity Transfer I, II and III’, 1968 (pictured), soon after adopting the artistic alter-ego ‘VALIE EXPORT’, a name borrowed from an Austrian cigarette brand. In her ‘Identity Transfer’ images the artist’s gender is deliberately ambiguous; neither straightforwardly male nor female. - See this work and more at ‘DRAG: Self-portraits and Body Politics’, until 14 October. Entry is FREE . . . #haywardgallery #southbankcentre #tranformationtuesday #VALIEEXPORT #DRAGhayward #androgynous #drag #alterego #tranformation #freeexhibition #freeshow #londonexhibition #photography #sixtiesphotography

‘His Majesty the Queen’, 1973, by Luciano Castelli . Initially trained as a sculptor, Luciano Castelli extended his practice to include photography, performance, painting and video. When he began to pose for the camera in the early 1970s, he adopted a variety of roles influenced by glam rock, transforming himself into an androgynous model with long hair, makeup, glitter and high heels. With these provocative self-portraits Castelli criticised what he saw as a conservative, puritanical society, and celebrated the sexual freedom of the pre-AIDS generation . Find this work at ‘DRAG: Self-portraits and Body Politics’, ending Oct 14. Entry is FREE . #haywardgallery #southbankcentre #DRAGhayward #lucianocastelli #drag #dragqueen #transformation #freeshow #freeexhibition

Ming Wong’s ‘After Chinatown’, 2012, addresses the problematic representation of both gender and race in Roman Polanski’s seminal ‘Chinatown’. Wong plays both characters in the film - the detective and the femme fatale. By reinterpreting iconic moments from popular culture, Wong aims to ‘reveal how one’s identity is constructed, reproduced and circulated’. Creating a theatrical frame for the works in the HENI gallery is @paulkindersley's ‘NatureDrag’. The mural playfully touches on ecosexuality, and the idea of 'drag' existing beyond the gender spectrum all together. You’ll find more of Kindersley’s work at ‘DRAG: Self-portraits and Body Politics’, ending 14 October. #haywardgallery #southbankcentre #paulkindersley #naturedrag #ecosexuality #DRAG #freeexhibition #freeshow #dragqueen #transformation #mural #wallpainting #sitespecificart at Hayward Gallery at Southbank Centre

What about the Drag Kings and Bio Queens?... ‘Drag Queens’ have exploded onto the mainstream, but something is missing from the narrative. ‘Drag Kings’ (mostly female performers dressed in male attire) and ‘Bio Queens’ (often females who dress in the typical style of Drag Queens) are two more neglected strands of drag which feature as part of the ongoing exhibition at Hayward Gallery. Victoria Sin (who goes by the pronoun 'they') has stated that “a lot of drag is misogynistic, but for me gender is the butt of the joke, not women”. Their exaggerated embodiment of femininity, which merges the image of various icons, from Marilyn Monroe to Jessica Rabbit, is paving the way for a more representative kind of 'dragging up'. Discover their work at 'DRAG: Self-portraits and Body Politics', until 14 October Image Credit: Victoria Sin, The Reprise of Cthulhu, 2016 Quote: Evening Standard #haywardgallery #southbankcentre #victoriasin #drag #dragqueen #bioqueen #transformation

Before the days of Ru Paul, 'Drag' gained enormous popularity in the early 20th century, particularly in Bohemian circles, such as the Surrealists in Paris. It was a time when Marcel Duchamp famously stood before Man Ray’s lens dressed as his altar ego, ‘Rrose Selavy’, both with the intent to shock the bourgeoisie, and as an extension of traditional gender bending in portraiture. Sturtevant, whose work appears in 'DRAG: Self-portraits and Body Politics' at @hayward.gallery, was notorious for ‘copying’ other artists in order to interrogate ideas of authenticity. In 'Duchamp Man Ray', Sturtevant’s restages a photograph of Duchamp by Man Ray in a similar consideration of the shifting nature of identity.
