Introducing colour over the last couple of years has been exciting for me. I have always been most interested in shape while colour fell away, always using black or white as a finish in order to show form better. Now I'm embracing the connotations of colour - another reason I avoided it before. Every colour seems to come loaded with cultural or actual meaning that seemed like too much to put into the work. In my world though, I'm still careful with colour, I have only been introducing red and it's variants over the last few years, which feels like a lot as I have a need to thoughtfully consider all creative moves like this. Sometimes to the impatience of some around me, which I find quite amusing. I will take my time, it's just who I am #slowdevelopment #ceramics #porcelain #clay #pottersofinstagram #potter #vase #vessel #pottery #jodavies #design #craft #designdevelopment #wheelthrownpottery #wheelthrowing #studiopottery at London, United Kingdom

We've noticed that Christmas is on its way here at the studio so playing around with ribbons, baubles and Speak Vases is 100% necessary. I hope you're looking forward to the holiday - not long now - I definitely am. Collections of orders from the studio in London are available until the morning of Christmas Eve this year (get in touch to arrange) and the last delivery date in time for Christmas is 19 December. If you miss all of that though we also have gift vouchers on the website now so plenty of opportunity. This week has seen some 'panic-making' of my Speak Vase design - of all varieties - ahead of Christmas and for the London Art Fair in January. Here's a speeded up video of part of the process when I'm closing the top to create the round base. The next day the shaping of the vase is completed with its distinctive flute being attached when the porcelain has dried off a little. Working with clay always has many stages so I thought it was about time I uploaded a little insight into this again. #ceramics #clay #porcelain #studioceramics #vase #vessel #jodavies #pottersofinstagram #pottery #wheelthrownpottery #wheelthrown #wheelthrowing #thrown #wheel #finecraft #craft #handmadevase #handmadegifts #handmade #londonmaker at The Chocolate Factory N16

Just been doing some more gilding today at the studio, which is always something I enjoy. By breaking up the gold leaf as it goes onto the vase I gain a slight texture across its surface changing the way it reflects light and shows off the shape underneath it. Pictured is a Gilded Flare Vase, which is available via my website shop. #porcelain #gold #goldleaf #gilded #24ctgold #ceramics #vase #vessel #gifts #christmas #xmas #studio #studiopotter #studiopottery #pottery #jodavies at The Chocolate Factory N16

A little throwback to my Hanging Vases for you today. I've been working hard @westdeancollege for the last few days with some lovely students and their fledgling wheel-thrown pots but I'm now looking forward to getting back into the studio next week to make some Christmas orders as well as considering my display for London Art Fair in January. #ceramics #clay #clayperson #porcelain #studio #potterytutor #jodavies #pottersofinstagram #pottery #wheelthrownpottery #wheelthrown #ceramic #vase #vessel #finecraft #craft

This is the @chocolate_factory_n16 , it has been home for my studio for close to 10 years now (10 years!). It's a great little community and we love it. This week is @justacard week for independent designers, makers, shops and small enterprises - a campaign that highlights how important every sale is to each independently run business we support - and this weekend is our Open Studio. A time when we collectively tidy up, shape up and sort out so we can proudly open up to public curiosity about what we do behind closed doors for most of the year. I graduated from my degree in ceramics in 2002. At that point my main aim was to have a creative career and for it to remain interesting, to continue exploring my ceramic ideas and never give up on that. My ambitions were pretty broad at the time so I feel that I'm staying true to them. There have been many failures and many rejections from this or that, which I always tell students is part of the particular game we're in but it's so easy to be disheartened by them. However, this year has been a really good one. With the opening of my three person show at the Contemporary Ceramics Centre at the start to my invitation to teach at the Ceramics Institute in Jingdezhen to being invited to undertake a solo show in Shanghai in 2019. I'm feeling pretty proud of powering through all the knock backs right now. Sometimes they made me cry, sometimes I was quietly relieved but sometimes, like now, I can allow myself time to see that it's all worth it #ceramics #justacard #clay #independet #pottersofinstagram #makers #meetthemaker #porcelain #openstudio #artevent #art #pottery #pots #shopindependent #londonartevent at The Chocolate Factory N16

Coming out of the studio to meet people who are interested in my work every now and then is always a pleasure. This weekend's foray out to the Midcentury Modern show at Dulwich College will be no different - I look forward to meeting with old friends and new on Sunday @midcentury_modern on the @futureicons_ stand #ceramics #clay #porcelain #pottersofinstagram #pottery #wheelthrown #design #midcenturyshow #jodavies #vase #vessel #craft

Back home. Back on the wheel. Plus a big thank you to all those who visited the exhibition Ripple Effect @thrown_contemporary in Highgate Village last night and listened patiently while I talked a little about motivations and meanings. @thepotteryworkshopjdz studio tour over the last two days was absolutely amazing. So great to see the different approaches and beautiful spaces of the artists and craftspeople of Jingdezhen - something that would have been hidden to me without the Pottery Workshop tour which took us to various locations around the city. From highly polished interiors to studios inside old industrial buildings it was a rich glimpse into contemporary makers' lives in JDZ. It's all totally Big Pot Factory. This is literally what this place is called. Thick wheel-thrown sections are made from 'big pot porcelain' and then attached together and trimmed before being painted, glazed and put in the massive kiln. Really impressive to see the working practices, so much skill. One of the things that has come up again and again since I've been here is the idea of throwing porcelain thickly. Amongst many of my students in the UK there is a perception that porcelain should always be thin, that throwing thinly is the only way, which is wrong and a doctrine I don't subscribe to in my own practice, believing that weight of material is important dependent on the function of the object - cups should be thin and have a light weight to be lifted comfortably, whilst vases are importantly grounded through more weight, for instance. This belief around thin porcelain also reveals a lack of understanding about clay's need for structure, particularly in the kiln firing - the greater the size of the piece especially - too thin and it will simply collapse with the heatwork of the kiln. The belief that porcelain should always be paper thin is a historical one and a subject I could write quite a lot about...! #ceramics #clay #porcelain #porcelaincity #jingdezhen #pots #pottery #ceramicart #jodavies #china #pottersofinstagram #bigpots #wheelthrownpottery #wheelthrown #turning at Jingdezhen

This morning was all about Chinese power of propaganda during a visit to the Museum of Porcelain in Jingdezhen where I found these incredible Song Dynasty tomb figures. Each one has amazing character achieved with gestural making techniques and observational skills on the part of the artist/s who made them. Made the visit totally worth it despite the macho building... #ceramics #porcelain #porcelaincity #clay #jingdezhen #pottery #pottersofinstagram #ceramicist #clayfigures #pots at Jingdezhen

The Ancient Kiln Folklore Museum in Jingdezhen is a site where pottery has been made since the Song Dynasty but was the most productive in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. The old dragon kilns and workshops are spread across a huge site, which has become a bit of a pottery theme park - who knew such a thing could possibly exist and be as busy as it is? Despite the crowds I gained a lot from this visit, making another incremental addition to my understanding of Jingdezhen porcelain and the working practices around it. I definitely have a sense of learning here and constantly have a sense of 'muddling' my way through, getting things wrong daily - hourly - but on Monday it's time to return to the students at Jingdezhen Ceramics Institute. Hopefully I can teach them something too #ceramics #clay #jingdezhen #pottery #potterworld #potter #designer #porcelain #pottersofinstagram #jodavies at Jingdezhen

This is Jingdezhen Ghost Market. A place where ancient and 'fake ancient' ceramics co-exist on make-shift Matt's and sheets on the ground. It's amazing to me because much of the ceramics here has only recently been dug out of the mound they were thrown on around 1000 years ago. My new friend, Ben, showed me around and talked me through how it worked. There is now a huge interest in the ancient rejects that were seen as defective at the time they were removed from the kiln but are now seen as beautiful historic and creative items. In this noisy, bonkers place you can find sherds, pots that collapsed in their firings or just the ones with a few imperfections and even the one that stuck to the saggar that was supposed to protect it in the kiln. I ended up with my own piece of Song Dynasty (over 1000 years old) - a tiny, beautifully imperfect cup. #ceramics #ceramicart #porcelain #jingdezhen #clay #pottery #potter #pot #songdynasty #jodavies #fineporcelain #cup

Hello Jingdezhen and your innovative use of pottery discard. These look like old, fragmented roof tiles layed on their edge to create a beautiful floor. I'm here helping out at the Ceramics Institute but plenty of time for touring the local studios, museums and galleries for ceramic nerds like me #clay #ceramics #porcelain #pottery #jingdezhen #china
