Yesterday, I attended a talking circle held by the the coastal Nuu-chah-nulth tribal alliance communities and Indigenous leaders with a goal of removing salmon farms from the waters in these coastal communities. As I’m Métis and learning more about my Cree heritage, attending gatherings like this is helping broaden my understanding of the deep history and interconnectedness between the environment, traditions and cultural significance of Indigenous beliefs and values.
It’s incredible to see these communities supporting each other to make powerful changes to bring wild salmon back into our waters, and sharing stories of past times that shouldn’t be forgotten. The power of community is truly inspiring, and I encourage anyone who visits Tofino to learn more about the issues at hand on the coast and beyond. Here are a few images from the day.
Spaces and places where I’d gladly stay for a while.

Something different to capture memories from our road trip through Spain and France last week— Less perfection, and more shared moments with friends over wine, chasing surf, and getting lost for a while.

A magical night in the Pacific Rim. While I was walking back up the trail, I turned for a last peek at the sunset to see a whale pop into the lineup. That moment is in the second image. While my camera was out of focus, it’s a scene I’ll never forget. And I’m sure these surfers would say the same thing.

Take me to the sea. Spotting beautiful boats while searching for whales and grizzlies with the Homalco First Nation off the coast of Vancouver Island. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

My work often finds me in the air, leaving for the next place as quickly as I arrive. This choice in career leaves a significant mark on my carbon footprint. I want to do better. There are a lot of airlines that are making changes to reduce their CO2 emissions. This #EarthDay I pledge to do better and make a more conscious effort to select airlines that are doing their part to offset their emissions through fuel management initiatives, something I, in full transparency, rarely consider when I book travel.
It’s a lot easier to live a sustainable life when the choices are clearly displayed in front of you. Plastic bag or canvas bag. Takeaway container or bring your own. It’s a lot trickier to spot the effects that you can’t see. The choice is in our hands to make changes to offset our carbon footprint, and protect the Earth we live in. #TravelAlaska at Juneau, Alaska
