My adventures from around the world and wildlife encounters. Creating awareness to save endangered species

Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge is one of those natural hidden jewels of NYC. A train ride away from Manhattan, it is an oasis of tranquility, full of green and blue hues. Spent sometime there today watching a number of the bird species that the bay hosts. I felt like I traveled a world away from the hustle and bustle of the Big Apple. #jamaicabay #wildlife #wildliferefuge #nyc #forsterstern #egret
Today, helping Audubon track the shorebirds migration at one of the hidden natural corners of Manhattan: an expected oasis for nature. These birds have a long way to go to get to Central and South America for the winter so these spots where they can rest and feed along the journey are critical. Although the shorebirds were absent at the time I inspected the marsh, the beauty of the area and its inhabitants was enchanting #audubon #monarchbutterflies #monarch #butterflies #bees #marsh #wetlands #nyc #nature #conservation at New York, New York
Despite what many believe, there is plenty of wildlife to be found in NYC with 350 species of birds living or passing through the city every year. Until 2012, NYC did not have a wildlife rehabilitation center. However, since that year due to the work of Rita McMahon, when one of those birds gets hurt (90% of the time due to human activities), they can come to the Wild Bird Fund and find a home to rehabilitate before going back to the wild. I had a chance to spend time at the Wild Bird Fund center today in upper Manhattan and meet Rita. It takes intention and passion to make positive change in the world happen and I could feel in Rita’s every word and action, her love and dedication to give all these feathery visitors a second chance. In the pictures, you can see some of the inhabitants of the center. If you want to support it, go to https://www.wildbirdfund.org

Let’s clean up this beach!
I am always fascinated by oasis of nature in the midsts of a major metropolis. I got a chance to spend time at one: Plumb Beach in Brooklyn, New York, which is part of Gateway National Recreation Area. This beach along with the other locations of the recreation area is a critical stop for birds migrating north.
Unfortunately, garbage and debris winds up on its shores. “It’s unsightly, polluting, and prevents urban wildlife like migratory birds, diamondback terrapins, and horseshoe crabs from using the beaches for feeding and nesting.” Together with ~20 other volunteers, got down and dirty to rid the beach of all the unwanted materias. We found the expected (bottles of water, plastic bags, plastic straws, Heineken beer, styrofoam cups) and were shocked by the unexpected things we found including syringes, a tire, a jug of Mazola oil, a capsized buried boat, a condom, a diaper, a side table and an infinite number of cigarette butts! The number of bags of trash we collected by the end of the cleanup was appalling.
I am glad to say that the beach looked like new by the time we left. Now, the wildlife and beach visitors can enjoy a beautiful corner of nature in the sprawling NYC metropolis.

It’s hard to see an animal’s subspecies disappear in front of our eyes but that is what we are faced with more and more often in today’s world. I did not have a chance to meet Sudan, the last male northern while rhino, but met DJ (on the video) a few weeks ago and it is sad to see such a majestic subspecies of the rhino family on the brink of completely disappearing with only two female northern white rhinos left. As stewards of Earth’s wildlife, we can and have to do better #rhinos #wildlife #morewildlife
Taking a break from corporate life to dedicate the next few months to explore creating a startup around wildlife conservation.
If you have been following my adventures, you might have not realized that I actually had a corporate job :). However, you would know that wildlife and their conservation is one of my passions and there are so many species that are vulnerable or endangered and at risk of extinction that the time has come for me to try to do more. After incubating some ideas in this space for the last couple of years, I am excited and eager to move them forward, apply new technologies and put my innovation skills to use for wildlife.
I leave many talented colleagues and good friends behind, but thankful for a great professional experience which also built a foundation for what I need to do. The time had come to take this leap for something near and dear to my heart: the amazing wildlife of our planet ❤️. I hope to share this new journey with you.

It is probably no coincidence than at this special juncture of my life when I am about to start a new path, I find myself in the 50th country I have visited: Fiji. It is easy for travel to become a checklist, "what is next?". But at one point for me, it became: "this is an incredible planet", and then: "I need to do more to preserve it". As I look towards the future, with hopes and dreams ahead of me, I feel at peace and ready for what’s next #goodbyefiji #hellonewyork at Castaway Island Fiji
Hiking to the top of Castaway island in Fiji. I was in much need of a hike and a talk with nature to clear my thoughts and cleanse my emotions. Glad a few interesting wildlife characters came by to meet me on the the way up. I felt renewed after it. #castawayisland #fiji at Castaway Island Fiji
