Step Out (a new space in SIB where architecture transcends onto other fields) * Juan Raúl Hoyos The interest I have always had in painting and architecture originates in the same source that my wish to draw near to photography springs from. In fact, the artists who have the strongest influence on my work are photographers or artists who work with photographic images. They are really images of the city, urban landscapes of the place where I find myself. They act as a frame, as ongoing reflections on a life between the domestic and the urban, as a sort of approach to the things which surround me. Like a zoom lens or a movie camera, my vision generally moves between the general and the particular and vice-versa, with neither a logical nor a consecutive chronology. At times, this technique unleashes a fairly meticulous approach to the objects and the portrait. On other occasions, the lens opens and I pause to observe the architecture of things. In short, my work is a constant exploration of the actual city which surrounds us. Text taken from abstractioninaction.com/artists/juan-raul-hoyos/ @juanraulhoyos #showitbetter

Step Out (a new space in SIB where architecture transcends onto other fields) * Olaf Holzapfel artist. Olaf Holzapfel’s paintings, mixed-media sculptures, and photographs are meditations on the subjective experience of light as seen through fragments of urban and rural architecture and embodied in maquettes, diagrams, and grids. Holzapfel is interested in how humans order their natural surroundings and vice versa. For “My personal interweaved habitats” (2010), Holzapfel created sculptures made from locally sourced, traditional materials from around the world—an installation of timber-frame houses made from cactus fiber references traditional architectural materials of a native tribe in Argentina, while creations of braided straw evoke Polish craftmaking customs. Step Out (a new space in SIB where architecture transcends onto other fields) * Claes Oldenburgs artist One of Claes Oldenburg’s best-known artistic techniques is that of alienating everyday objects by enlarging their dimensions and modifying their material composition. When the artist discovered a pickaxe at a construction site during preparations for documenta 7, he was inspired to produce an oversized replica of the object—an almost archaic tool that has closer ties to the years of reconstruction in Kassel than to today’s high-tech world. Originally conceived for purposes of provocation, Pop Art assumes a narrative character through this ironic gesture of pathos. The sculpture takes its place as an anecdote in the history and the topography of the city. The idyllic, seemingly random location near the river marks the point at which the extended axis of Wilhelmshöher Allee meets the bank of the Fulda. Thus the artist created the myth that Hercules, the ancient Greek demigod with superhuman strength, threw the monumental tool instead of his club from the heights of the Wilhelmhöhe Bergpark over the city, where it landed and remained stuck in the ground, pointing back to him.
