1989 working lunch at old Tommy Boy office, 1747 First Ave. in Yorkville. Note double-wide Rolodex, the Lexus RX of beeper number storage. That’s ever-patient head of production Paul Adelberg sitting across from me. #tbt #1989 #hiphop #goldenage #rolodex #tommyboy #yorkville #nyc

Bilal, Sunnyside. Noticed him buying oranges and was immediately struck by his strong presence and dapper style. Turns out he’s a tailor of note who was recently profiled in the NYT. Bilal is 75, originally from Turkey, and rides his super cool vintage 1945 bike from Sunnyside to his Genius Tailor shop in Lenox Hill six days a week! #sunnyside #queens #nyc #advancedstyle #dapper #mensfashion #mensstyle #turkish #streetphotography 🇹🇷

Early 90s snapshots from the mighty 26th St. flea market. Once a sprawling scene encompassing 3 full lots, a 2-story garage, and a couple of multi-story buildings of indoor dealers, it’s now a puny patch on a single side street lot. Any given Sunday, you could explore countless fantastic finds and enjoy top shelf people watching. It was a weekly gathering of various oddball tribes. Loved the dealers, some real characters. It was a rare to NOT haul an exotic treasure back to the crib every week. Good times. #anygivensunday #fleamarket #90s #nyc #26thstreet #manhattan #streetphotography

Lebanese beauty Samia rocks Valentine’s Day red just right. Caught up with Samia and her Pakistani husband of 39 years, David, as they enjoyed afternoon espressos at El Buen Sabor in Sunnyside. They invited me to join them but I wanted to take advantage of the good weather and walk off the winter blahs. #sunnyside #queens #nyc #valentinesday #advancedstyle #streetphotography 🇱🇧

My 91-year-old neighbor Joe died in Dec. 2016. His body was found upright in his bed several weeks later with spider webs on it as rent notices piled up on his doorstep. My friend who lives across the hall was forced to call the NYPD after the smell and the bugs around the doorway got too bad. Joe had reportedly lived in the building since it opened in 1937 (he would’ve been 7). He was a nocturnal hoarder, always out on the street at 3am with a shopping cart. He had a respiratory issue that forced him to stop and rest every few steps but nothing deterred him from his nightly rounds. He was always friendly despite the sign on his door that read, “Whatever you’re selling, I already have it. Go away.” Turns out he may have been right. According to my friend, Joe’s apartment was jam-packed with laptops, screens, stereo equipment, radios, medieval weaponry, heavy wood furniture, and a player piano. The walls were dark and sooty, as if they hadn’t been painted since the 30s. The super said the water connection to his bathtub had been shut off many years ago. Stubborn to the end, It took a mighty effort by the strapping young firemen to enter the apartment and extract Joe’s cold dead body. A few of us neighbors milled around in the hallway while they clanged about. We speculated on how he died, when he died, and was it a one bedroom or two (all's fair in NYC real estate). His wife Mitilda died in the same apartment a couple of years earlier. Most of us were shocked because we didn’t even know he had a wife. Clearly she’d been housebound. Have never been able to locate obits for either of them. Today, after months of visits from hazmat workers and far-flung relatives, Joe’s belongings are finally being hauled off by the junkman. Construction workers had arrived last week to start renovating the apartment to find that Joe’s stuff was still piled up in there, floor to ceiling. So far three full truckloads have been loaded up and taken away. And they’re coming back for more. The remains of Joe. "Sunnyside is an island. It's surrounded by commercial, railroad, graveyard, highway." -Joe, Sunnyside resident. (Photo: Dan Toth) #sunnyside #queens #nyc #allthatremains
