Good day everyone!! This photo is from the outdoor yoga shala I used to teach in Vang Vieng. I really miss it. What a gorgeous place to practice yoga. Surrounded by rice fields, amazing views to the mountains, complete silence... ⁠ ⁠ Sometimes I would go there very early in the morning, just to be on my own and do a bit of practice. ⁠ ⁠ My early morning practice is something I really try to protect in my crazy, nomadic life. I rarely post pictures of food... or drinks... you can scroll down if you don't believe me (well, you might find one or two), but really loved that coffee cup (it's a glass inside a glass!) and definitely enjoyed the cakes! I only recorded this video in Spanish.... sorry, no English vid, but here it goes. Basically I’m saying that im in the middle of Laos 🇱🇦. In a very rural area not very visited... by anyone! I’m with a family that has a guesthouse where I’ve been the only guest for the last two days... I’m surrounded by rice fields and lovely and genuine people! In this village the cows, chickens, ducks, dogs, etc... roam freely in the streets and live peacefully with the each other. Reach for your goals!⁠ ⁠ Side Angle Pose - Utthita Parsvakonasana. ⁠ Utthita means 'extended', so we are stretching and extending the whole of our side body. We also⁠ strengthen the legs, knees, and ankles, stretch the hamstrings, and tone the abdominals. Basically, all parts of the body are involved, from feet to fingers, to the front of the torso and to the back and sides. ⁠ ⁠ Perhaps more importantly, by performing a posture that requires so much detailed focus on our bodies, we are also training our mind to be focused. That focus can enhance our ability to concentrate and reach our goals... like we are reaching with our extended arm (ok, yeah, I know that the pose is meant to resemble a warrior throwing a spear, but who can really relate to that?)⁠ ⁠ Next time you practice, try picturing yourself literally 'reaching' for your goal with the stretched hand and observe is that changes anything in your body or mind.⁠ ⁠ What do you think? Your heart is not only in front of your chest, you can also reach your heart from your back! ⁠ ⁠ When I am training actors I usually like to remind them that the audience can also see their backs! It seems an obvious idea, but most of the time we present ourselves to the world by only being conscious or paying attention of our 'front body'.⁠ .⁠ Which got me thinking about this pose, Reverse Prayer Pose - Pashchima Namaskarasana or Viparita Namaskarasana. Here we offer respect, but we do it with our hands behind our back... which is another way to touch our hearts... from a different perspective.⁠ .⁠ .⁠ .⁠ And of course it also offers many physical benefits:⁠ Releases tension from your shoulders and collarbone area. Aids in wrist and forearm flexibility. Helps open up the chest. ⁠ Helps strengthen your wrist tendons which is especially good for people who suffer from carpal tunnel syndrome and wrist pain. Natarajasana, or Lord of the Dance Pose. I am really starting to love this pose. I've been building some classes around it and both me and my students love it. It's always fun for beginners to play with it, and for more seasoned practitioners to work on all the aspects of the pose.⁠ .⁠ It's a pretty pose to look at, and fun to do, and despite all the current photos around Instagram of actual dancers or very strong and flexible yogis, you don't need to take your leg up to your head, or even use both arms to reap the many benefits and play with it.⁠ .⁠ Strengthens the feet, ankles, legs, core, back and arms.⁠ Opens the front of the body, the chest, abdomen, hip flexors and the shoulders.⁠ Improves balance and concentration.⁠ .⁠ That last one if a biggie for many people, including me... balance and concentration also tend to be intimately related. My balance has better days, and worse days, and usually depends on where my mind is. But we also loose balance with age, so we need to train it even more. ⁠ .⁠ How is your balance? Just playing around with some new video app. And yes, doing yoga everywhere! . I really love this small town and all it has to offer, just walking around and discovering new quiet corners. . Vang Vieng has a reputation for late night, drinking, party town. And there’s quite a lot of that, but also a beautiful country side to explore. And many people looking for the exact opposite to late party. I’m currently teaching yoga at @yogainvangvieng and most of the guests actually enjoy the quieter practices, the more yin and restorative the better. And I’m also discovering how much I’m enjoy teaching them! . . Mantras are a powerful tool.⁠ Not only I do practice japa meditation (the repetition of a mantra), but I also have the habit of setting up a personal 'mantra for the month'.⁠ ⁠ Every month I write in my #BulletJournal a little review of my previous month, a self-reflection of the things I did and felt, if I'm on track regarding my goals, tasks, etc. Then, I set up the next month, and I include a monthly 'mantra' or a sentence that will help me during that particular month. It could be a short sentence or quote, like the one I've chosen this month: "Action conquers fear" or something that will keep me productive if I've been procrastinating too much, like: "is this activity useful right now?"⁠ .⁠ .⁠ .⁠ .⁠ .⁠ Do you have any favourite quote, sentence or mantra you live by?⁠ ⁠ Why don't you just make up one now? What could it be? Remember that it's not for every, maybe just for this moment, day, week or month. Don't run away from yoga!⁠ ⁠Ok... so you decide to sign up to a yoga class, but which one? hatha, ashtanga, jivamukti, kundalini, vinyasa, power, sivananda, forest, anusara, yin yoga, yoga nidra... and the list goes on and on and on.⁠ Confused? You are not alone.⁠ .⁠⁠ Some yoga styles simply carry the name of their 'creator', and most aren't fundamentally different from another; because they are all based on the same basic 'asanas' and principles that Hatha yogis developed quite a few hundred years ago. ⁠Hold on... hundreds of years you say?⁠ .⁠ Actually, many of the considered traditional asanas and flows are pretty modern, and have been around only since the start of the 20th century. I'll tell you about Krishnamacharya, the father of modern yoga, some other time... ⁠ .⁠ So, if some of those postures, and some of those sequences are 'new'... why not carry on inventing new ones, new styles? That is what seems to be happening... yoga is exploding in all directions! A new 'yoga this' or 'yoga that' seem to be appearing every other week.⁠ .⁠ I agree that the practice is and will be and should be in state of evolution. Maybe out of a true, genuine desire to improve the practice, to make it more accessible to all people... or maybe because after many years of solitary and/or intense practice you've discovered a new and faster way to reach samadhi (isn't that the goal?)... or maybe because putting a small TM next to a fancy name is good for marketing and business... 🤔 Err... so maybe not all change is actually needed.⁠ .⁠ What do you think? Is it ok to carry on marketing and bringing into the world 'new' styles of yoga. Reverse Warrior by the pool... this is my life now. Glamorous, right?⁠ .⁠ ⁠ ⁠The truth of the photo is that I'm standing super close to the edge of the pool. Which is, of course, full of running water, being an infinity pool...
