For this week’s #PilotiFavourites series, we’ll be highlighting some of the most influential race car drivers throughout history - Part 1! Swipe to check out! 👉🏼 1. James Hunt
Although likely best known for his iconic win of the 1976 F1 World Championship, James Hunt was also known for his sense of humor and killer charm. In 1975, Hunt scored the Hesketh Racing team’s only F1 victory before signing with McLaren in 1976. The 2013 film Rush depicted the story of the 1976 racing season and the rivalry between Hunt and Niki Lauda.
2. Dan Gurney (📸: @thegaragista)
Winning in Formula 1, Le Mans, IndyCar and NASCAR, Dan Gurney was arguably one of motorsports’s best racers of all time. He was a skilled innovator, owning a company called All American Racers which built race cars called Eagles. The great Jim Clark stated that Gurney was the only rival he feared. Gurney also set the trend of spraying champagne on the victory podium after his 1967 24 Hours of Le Mans win.
3. Michele Mouton (📸:@frdf_female_rally_drivers_fans)
Michele began her career in rallying, with one of the best rally cars available at the time and a gift from her father - a Renault Alpine A110. From 1981-1985, Mouton was an official driver for Audi. In 1986, Mouton raced for the Peugeot team, winning six out of eight events at the German Rally Championship. Mouton helped pave the way for women in motorsport, and is currently the President of the Women & Motorsport Commission.
4. Mario Andretti (📸: @pete_chopping)
Beginning his racing career at 18 years old in stock car events, Andretti has succeeded in various types of racing. In 1968, Andretti made his first Formula 1 debut, taking pole position at Watkins Glen in his Lotus 49B. Andretti was victorious in the 1976 Japanese Grand Prix at Fuji and in 1978, Andretti won the Formula One World Championship. Andretti’s desire to succeed continues to inspire fans, and is summed up in his famous quote: “If everything seems under control, you’re just not going fast enough”. For this week’s #PilotiFavorites series, we’ll be exploring some incredible attractions along the Ring Road in Iceland. Swipe to get started 👉🏼 The Ring Road (📸: @mike_from_queens) is on many road trip bucket lists, and for good reason. The Ring Road, also known as Route 1, is Iceland’s main road throughout the country that lets travelers explore some fantastic attractions along the way. Here are a few of our favorites:
1. Vestrahorn, Southeast Iceland (📸: @seffis) One of the most photographed mountains in Iceland, a small entry fee is required to use the road that reaches Vestrahorn. This mountain has been nicknamed the Batman Mountain, with spiky peaks reaching up to 454 meters.
2. Reynisfjara, Southwest Iceland (📸: @zephyrdrones) Requiring a short detour off the Ring Road, this beach is famous for its spectacular black sand and rocky sculptures along the coastline. The waves are incredibly strong, and visitors are cautioned to stay alert while exploring this stunning beach.
3. Seljalandsfoss, South Iceland (📸: @lightsinn) One of the most popular waterfalls in Iceland, the Seljalandsfoss can be seen by those driving along the Ring Road. To explore more closely, visitors can walk roughly 100 meters from the road to explore a path that leads behind the waterfall.
4. Jokulsarlon, Southeast Iceland (📸: @this.is.l.a) Another tourist favourite due to its spectacular beauty, this glacial lagoon is filled with icebergs that have broken off from the glacier. The drive along the South Coast to Jokulsarlon is particularly beautiful, and visitors can explore this attraction year round!
