Melissa Le Nevé (@melissaleneve) sharing her disbelief and joy. On November 23rd she took part in the Masters of Stone (@masters_of_stone) bouldering competition in Nürnberg, Germany that reached the ambitious goal of raising 10,000 euros for CAC - Climbers Against Cancer (@climbersagainstcancerofficial) the not-for-profit charity founded by John Ellison committed to the battle against cancer. The French athlete competed along with Alma Bestvater (@almabestvater), Afra Hönig (@afrahoenig), Jessica Pilz (@jessy_pilz) and Ievgeniia Kazbekova (@jenya_kazbekova), while the male lineup included Alex Megos (@alexandermegos), Phillip Martin, Jorg Verhoeven (@jorgverhoeven), Gabriele Moroni (@gabrimoroni), Tsukuru Hori (@tsukuru_fsp) and Alex Khazanov (@alexkhazanov) Significantly, the athletes donated all the prize money provided by the sponsors Scarpa and E9 to CAC. "It was a meaningful gesture" explained official photographer Eddie Fowke (@thecircuitclimbing) who nailed this shot and witnessed the unscripted scene "When the whole podium gave up their prize money and donated it to Climbers against Cancer it was really a touching moment." Masters of Stone indeed, and also masters in life. #mastersofstone #rockclimbing #sportsclimbing #climbersagainstcancer #fuckcancer at Nuremberg

In late November Austria’s Barbara Zangerl (@babsizangerl) and South Tyrol’s Jacopo Larcher (@jacopolarcher) completed their six-day free ascent of The Nose up El Capitan in Yosemite, USA. After a first attempt in 2018, this autumn both managed to lead all the hardest pitches and follow in the footsteps of Lynn Hill (@_linacolina_) who, in 1993, was the first to free what is likely to be the most famous rock climb in the world. After El Niño in 2015, Zodiac in 2016, Magic Mushroom in 2017 and Pre-Muir wall in 2019, check out our in-depth interview to see how they did it. ➡️ Link in bio #thenose #elcapitan #yosemite #yosemiteclimbing #rockclimbing #bigwallclimbing #bigwall at Yosemite National Park

Prime early season conditions in the Dolomites. Local mountain guide Alberto De Giuli (@albertodegiuli) captures Norbert Frenademez (@norbertfrenademez) on his way up towards Forcella delle Torri. The backdrop couldn't be more regal: Sassolungo's sun-basked Torre Innerkofler on the left and the famous tooth-shaped Dente / Zahnkofel on the right. #dolomites #dolomiti #dolomiten #skimountaineering #skibergsteigen #scialpinismo #sassolungo #langkofel #plattkofel #sassopiatto #alpinist #alpinism #wintermountaineering #mountaineering #zahnkofel #torreinnerkofler at Dolomiti, Trentino-Alto Adige, Italian Alps

British mountaineer Leo Houlding (@leo_houlding) has successfully led an small international team to establish a new big wall climb Mount Roraima. This fabulous and fabled mountain straddles the borders of Brazil, Venezuela and Guyana and after air dropping much of their gear and battling through 50km of uncharted jungle Houlding, Wilson Cutbirth (@wilstone8), Waldo Etherington (@waldo_etherington), Dan Howard, Matt Pycroft (@mattpycroft) and Anna Taylor (@anna_taylor_98) forged a new route up the striking sandstone prow. The line shares the same start as the first climb up the Guyanan side of the peak, put up in 1973 by British legends Mo Antoine, Joe Brown, Hamish MacInnes and Don Whillans. Importantly, Houlding’s team also included two Amer-Indians, Edward and Troy, and this is the first time locals have summited their mountain. ➡️ Link in bio 📷 Matt Pycroft @coldhousemedia #mountroraima #roraima #firstascent #bigwall #bigwallclimbing #rockclimbing #guyana #climbinglegends #leohoulding at Monte Roraima

Ten years after Reinhold Messner (@reinholdmessner_official)and Peter Habeler set the gold standard for Himalayan mountaineering and became the first to climb Everest without supplementary oxygen, New Zealand’s Lydia Bradey (@lydiabradey) walked in their footsteps and on 14 October 1988 she became the first woman to summit the highest mountain in the world in the purest of styles. Bradey had just turned 27 and her lone, oxygen-free ascent was so remarkable that, unfortunately, it was greeted with absolute disbelief by some and consequently shrouded in controversy and bitter dispute. An end to the dispute was finally made when even the New Zealand Alpine Club Association accepted her groundbreaking ascent. Bradey’s achievement on Everest came about after years of climbing in New Zealand's Southern Alps paved the way for a successful, oxygenless climb of Gasherbrum II in 1987. Since then the qualified international guide has reached the summit of Everest on five further occasions with clients, and her climbing spans the globe. In this photo dating back to 1987 she is pictured with Bhagirathi in the background. ➡️ Link in bio to watch her fascinating story is told in an excellent short doc by @frankfilmnz #everest #nosupplementaryoxygen #firstwoman #mountaineering #alpinism #alpinist #noO2 #everestnoO2 #reinholdmessner #newzealand #climbinghistory #mountaineeringhistory #highaltitudemountaineering #everestgal #himalayas #girlswhoclimb #climbinggirls #climbinggirl at Bhagirathi

What happens when you take the reigning Boulder World Champion and winner of the 2019 Bouldering World Cup out of the training gym for a day and put him on the rock? Mayhem. Something almost never seen before. Enter Tomoa Narasaki (@tomoa_narasaki), who in Mizugaki in Japan made the first-go flash ascent of Decided, the 8B+ boulder freed by Ryuichi Murai (@ryu____1) in 2018 that hit the limelight a few days ago when Murai freed the low start create his 8C+ United. Five further moves that Narasaki will surely home in on hopefully sooner rather than later. In the past the 23-year-old has repeated up to 8B+ but never before had he flashed this level of difficulty and it goes without saying that he joins only handful of climbers who have climbed this hard in this impeccable style. ➡️ Link in bio 📷 @shintaozawa #bouldering #rockclimbing #mizugaki #japan #worldchampion #v14flash at Japan

Swiss mountaineer Simon Chatelan (@simonchatelan) has completed his new mixed climb in the Gastlosen massif. He established his 200m From Kirov with Love solo last year and freed it with difficulties up to M9 recently with Nicolas Jaquet. The Gastlosen massif in the Friborg Prealps in Switzerland is best known for climbing in summer and its steep north faces, much less for modern mixed routes. However, according to Chatelan there is enormous potential for this form of winter mountaineering. #mixedclimbing #winterclimbing #gastlosen #wintermountaineering #firstascent at Gastlosen

Devastating news comes from Mexico where American rock climber Brad Gobright died yesterday, Wednesday 27 November, in an accident while climbing El Sendero Luminoso up El Toro at El Potrero Chico. Gobright had received international acclaim for his daring free solo climbs and for having set a new speed record on The Nose up El Capitan in 2017 with Jim Reynolds. He was recognised not only for his talent and dedication to climbing but above all, as Alex Honnold stated, for being a "true light". Once again the close-knit climbing community grieves the loss of another of its members.

“There are climbs that have a soul and there are climbs that only have a number.” Heinz Mariacher (@heinzmariacher) one of the main players during the early days of modern sport climbing, establishing his classic slab testpiece Super Swing at the Swing Area crag in Arco, Italy, back in 1983. ➡️ Link in bio to find out more about these climbs and how @magmidt fared on them 36 years later #climbinglegend #slabclimbing #arcoclimbing #sportclimbing #1980s #heinzmariacher #swingarea #climbinghistory at Arco, Italy

Hazel Findlay (@hazel_findlay) has repeated Magic Line, the splendid thin crack climb located at the base of the Vernal Falls in Yosemite, first climbed in 1996 by true valley legend Ron Kauk. At the time the Stonemaster climbed the crack with pre-placed gear. In 2016 his son Lonnie Kauk made the route’s second ascent and then in November 2018 he took things to their logical conclusion and climbed the route placing all the gear on lead. Graded 5.14c, Magic Line is reputed to be one of the most difficult crack climbs of all, not only in Yosemite Valley. Placing all gear on lead, Findlay climbed the route on her last attempt and on her last day in the USA. 📷 @jacopolarcher #yosemite #yosemitenationalpark #tradclimbing #crackclimbing #tradisrad #tradisradgirl #magicline #vernalfalls #rockclimbing #climbinggirls #girlpower at Vernall Falls at Yosemite National Park

After a concerted effort 23-year-old Buster Martin (@bustermartin) has managed to repeat First Ley, the 9a+ at Margalef in Spain which shares the same start as Chris Sharma’s 2011 9b First Round, First Minute before breaking off left to avoid the bouldery crux finish. Martin first attempted the route in January this year and made a couple of trips to Margalef battling against the route’s difficulties, the heat and humidity before making his powerful ascent two days ago after about 20 days on the route. "I fell off the last move about 10 times" Martin told planetmountain.com "but in the end I was rewarded for the patience, had some perfect conditions, and the magic happened." 📷 @henrykinman #margalef #margalefclimbing #firstley #catalunya #sportclimbing at Margalef, Cataluna, Spain

The Scottish winter climbing season has officially started with a number of teams bagging some new lines across the country. One of the first to make the most of the cold snowy weather was the formidable Greg Boswell (@greg_boswell) - Guy Robertson partnership that added Local Hero VIII 9 to An Teallach in NNW Scotland where the end of 2018 they had established the extremely testing The Forge. #winterclimbing #wintermountaineering #scotland #scotlandhighlands #firstascent #alpinism #mountaineering #scottishwinterclimbing #scottishwinter at An Teallach
