Between 1979-1982, Ed Nichols served as the U.S. Agricultural Counselor to Italy. Based in Rome, he engaged in successful deliberations with the Italian Minister of Agriculture. The Italian President decorated him in 1982 as Commendatore, a high Italian honorific title, for his success in advancing U.S.-Italian trade relations. Enjoy some mementos from Nichols’ time in Italy! #TravelTuesday #EdNichols #Rome #Italy #USDepartmentofAgriculture #USDA #ForeignAgriculturalService #Archives #PoageLibrary #BCPM at Baylor Collections of Political Materials

Former diplomat Ed Nichols worked for the USDA, 1977-1978, as Assistant to the Deputy Secretary. In this role, he was able to travel to China to assist in normalization of trade relations. He also had a little fun while in China: his friend, Tom Angott, recorded a 124 page document on the trip, and noted that Nichols was “very charmed with the different varieties of food, particularly…the sea moss” at a luncheon at the Imperial Palace. How perfect for #TravelTuesday! #EdNichols #China #USDepartmentofAgriculture #USDA #Archives #PoageLibrary #BCPM at Baylor Collections of Political Materials

As many of us know, October is playoff time for America's favorite pastime: baseball! We seem to have plenty of #baseball in our collections at Poage (see last Friday’s post on #AlanSteelman and baseball). This jersey belonged to #BobBullock when he played for Hillsboro High School. #PoageLibrary #BCPM #BatterUp #TakeMeOutToTheBallgame at Baylor Collections of Political Materials

We are really into trivia at Poage Library, so a fun part of celebrating our 38th Library birthday in September was, of course, a trivia quiz. It featured questions on all things Rep. W. R. Poage and Poage Library. Can you answer any of these questions? The answers are taken from Rep. Poage’s book, My First 85 Years. Swipe left to see them! #ArchivesHashtagParty #ArchivesGameNight #WRPoage #PoageLibrary #BCPM at W. R. Poage Legislative Library

Take me out to the ball game! At Poage Library, we have the papers of former Representative Alan Steelman, including his baseball cards from the 1974 Congressional Baseball game. Steelman was a Republican from Texas, serving the TX 5th District, 1973-1977. #ArchivesHashtagParty #ArchivesGameNight #AlanSteelman #Baseball #PoageLibrary #BCPM at Baylor Collections of Political Materials

There is an interesting story behind the constituent card chosen for the Congressional Collection collage on the #PoageLibrary homepage. Our archivist @mary_goolsby explained, “Although I married into the family after Mr. Hampel died, my mother-in-law remembers Mr. Poage coming to their house for dinner often. Her father was the manager of the McLennan County Electric Co-Operative and Mr. Poage was instrumental in helping him bring power to rural areas. It is an awesome family connection knowing my grandfather-in-law was great friends with Mr. Poage.” at Baylor Collections of Political Materials

During the month of October, we will spend some time highlighting the diplomatic papers of Ed Nichols and his various travel experiences. Between 1971-1977, Nichols was Assistant Commissioner of Agriculture for Texas and involved with the Japan-Texas Association Conference. As such, he was able to travel to Japan! Be sure to check out more posts on the Ed Nichols papers on Facebook this month @poagelibrary! #TravelTuesday #EdNichols #Japan #TexasDepartmentofAgriculture #Archives #PoageLibrary #BCPM at Baylor Collections of Political Materials
