Meet #PortlandState standout distance runner @KailaGibson48. Besides majoring in health studies with plans to go to nursing school, Kaila is having a senior season to remember. She was recently named Big Sky Athlete of the Week, becoming the first Viking runner to get the honor since 2006! • • Kaila’s academic life has been immersed in athletics from a young age, when she started playing soccer in kindergarten. Around the seventh grade, she discovered cross country and was intrigued how the sport allowed her to test the limits of her body. She immediately fell in love. • • Portland State has helped Kaila narrow her focus on life exponentially by providing a greater passion for her to pursue on top of cross country, she says. • • So how does she balance school with her running? Kaila credits her teammates and coach for pushing her to keep a consistent routine. Her advice for anyone interested in getting started in cross country is not to jump in too fast — she says a lot of people push themselves too hard in the beginning, ultimately burning themselves out. She recommends running with a friend when you’re just starting so you can monitor each other and regulate accordingly. • • Kaila hopes to continue partaking in cross country events at least through this coming summer, and has even been told by her coach that she’s welcome for up to two years after graduation — not an offer extended to most. When asked what keeps her going, Kaila says, “My teammates, really; I enjoy being there for them as they are for me and acting as a role model when needed.” • • Congratulations to Kaila Gibson for her outstanding performance this season, and best of luck on all her future accomplishments! #myPSUstory •• — Story, photos by Finn Rosenfeld • • #portlandstateuniversity #FearlessPSU #letknowledgeserve #goviks #proudviks #mydayinportland #pdx #portlandoregon #oregonexplored #traveloregon #northwestisbest #portlandnw #vscocam #college #downtownpdx #storyportrait #makeportraits #postthepeople #postmoreportraits #liveauthentic #pdxsnap #go2psu

Need a little time away (but not too far away) to clear your head and reconnect with nature? Latourell Falls in the Columbia River Gorge is an easy day hike with a big payoff. 👌 The 2.3-mile loop takes in two beautiful waterfalls in a lush forest setting. • • To get there: Go east on I-84 from Portland for about half an hour and take Exit #28/Bridal Veil. Turn right on the Historic Columbia River Highway and travel west for approximately 3 miles to the parking lot on your left/south. • • Photo by Joe Parks • • #hiking #hikes #columbiarivergorge #pnw #northwestisbest #upperleftusa #mypnw #nofilter at Latourell Falls Trailhead

Huge props to @KailaGibson48, who became the first @psuvikstf cross country runner to be named Big Sky Athlete of the Week since 2006. 🏃‍♀️💪 • • Gibson is having a noteworthy (re: awesome) senior season. She posted the best time ever by a Viking at the Charles Bowles Invitational, finishing 8th overall in the 5k with a time of 17:25.6. She beat the previous best of 17:30.9 that Amanda Boman set in 2015, and beat her own previous best at the meet of 17:43.5. • • She also has set new personal bests in the 4k, 5k and 6k already, as she's beaten her previous best times at every meet so far this season. • • Additionally, Gibson has helped the Viking women's team set its own history this season. The Viking women have been ranked 15th in the @ustfccca West Region poll for the past three weeks, the longest stretch of time they have been ranked in the poll in program history. • • #GoViks #fearlessPSU #allthefeels #portlandstate

Do you want to sound more masculine, feminine or somewhere in between? @PortlandState speech-language pathologists want to help you find your voice — literally. • • PSU is offering a free public lab to work with people who identify as transgender, gender fluid, non-binary or anywhere on the gender spectrum to develop a voice and communication style that best suits them and their gender identity. • • For people who don't identify as the sex they were assigned at birth, their voice can feel like a betrayal, said speech-language pathologist and professor Jeff Conn. "Their voice doesn't match who they are, who they want to be and who they're trying to present as. But if we can shape their voice into something that is more congruent with who they are and who they're presenting to be, it's no longer a betrayal. It becomes more them." • • Conn said there's more involved than simply changing a voice's pitch. Participants will work on everything from breathing to intonation, articulation and learning how to use their voice efficiently. Conn said it's important that they learn how to change their voice without harming their vocal cords. • • Those interested are encouraged to contact Jeff Conn at [email protected] • • #fearlessPSU #portlandstate #onlyatPSU
