Two internships at CH2M and Blount International helped Yury Kutsurenko land a position at Intel before he graduated. Kutsurenko, who went to Liberty High in Hillsboro, added a fifth year to his degree path to participate in the Multiple Engineering Co-op Program (MECOP). The program places 130 PSU students per year in two six-month, full-time, paid internships with nearly 200 industry partners. He says the real-world work experience was invaluable when he applied to Intel. “My chances went up drastically because of MECOP,” he says. “I would not be working where I am right now if I didn’t participate in those internships.” #2018PDXGrad
Samrawit “Sam” Biyazin may be the first blind student to graduate from PSU’s accounting program, but she hopes she won’t be the last. That’s why she worked so hard with her professors and the Disability Resource Center to make all her coursework accessible using screen-readers, braille and other tools. Growing up in Ethiopia, she was told she could not study math because of her blindness. She is grateful to her PSU professors, who encouraged her to major in accounting and supported her along the way. She will share her experience as a commencement speaker in June and then work as a business tax associate at PricewaterhouseCoopers, her dream job and employer. #2018PDXGrad

Portland native Spalding enrolled in PSU’s music program at 16 years old before beginning her career as a jazz vocalist, bassist and composer. Meet 21-year-old and #PortlandState senior Izabella Sy who is studying @pdxbschool Supply Chain Logistics and Communication. Born in Cebu, Philippines, Iza followed the footsteps of her brother to move and attend PSU in 2014. Immediately, she fell in love with PSU’s metropolitan location and felt it was just the right place to step outside her comfort zone, learn about herself and grow while living thousands of miles away from her family.
Iza credits an orientation for PSU international students as the impetus to her smooth transition to the campus community and involvement as a student leader. She joined @PSUKaibigan, PSU’s Filipino American Student Association, and just after two years, rose to her current role as President. This weekend, she will lead the organization on its 13th annual Pilipino Cultural Night, a celebration of Philippine heritage through cuisine, theater, music and traditional performances. While juggling her academic and extracurricular responsibilities, Iza also works as a student staff of PSU’s Resource Center for Students with Children. Through critical services such as a childcare center and the Jim Sells Childcare Assistance Program, Iza and her staff help serve the 20 percent of student parents that make up PSU’s student body.
During her free time, Iza enjoys the outdoors, watching movies, socializing with friends and singing. Her talent and passion for music have opened doors to perform at various campus events such as International Night and receptions for newly admitted students. When asked for advice for future Vikings, Iza says: “Don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. Be open to learning. Study abroad. Feel uncomfortable. That’s the only way you’ll grow.” When Iza graduates this spring, she plans to return to the Philippines and use her PSU degree and newly gained skills and experiences to help run her family business. #myPSUstory #2018pdxgrad

Meet 20-year old Anastasia Hale. Anastasia uses she/her pronouns and is originally from Milwaukie, Oregon. She is studying Health Studies: Community Health Education with a minor in Women, Gender, and Sexuality at #PortlandState. She has interned for @plannedparenthood and is a former PSU Student Ambassador. Anastasia is a Peer Educator for @illuminatepsu, PSU’s sexual and relationship violence prevention program. As a Peer Educator, she facilitates workshops to educate about consent, bystander intervention, and more.
Anastasia has been working with Illuminate to host PSU's 2nd Annual Denim Day. This is a day where folks wear denim in solidarity with survivors of sexual assault to promote awareness and education for Sexual Assault Awareness Month. On April 25th there will be Denim Day booth in the PSU Park Blocks from 9am - 3pm. There will be raffles and a cardboard cutout of Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears wearing their infamous Denim Date outfits. There will also be a clothesline activity. Supporters and survivors can write messages of encouragement on blank jeans. After the jeans are written on, they are hung on the clothesline. Later in the day, there will be a workshop hosted by the band @lascafeteras and a free concert in Parkway North.
In her freetime, Anastasia enjoys knitting, listening to podcasts, exploring @portland and going on hikes with her girlfriend. After graduation, she hopes to use her passion for reproductive justice and sexual health education by working in sexual health promotion. Anastasia will graduate in Spring of 2019. #myPSUstory at Portland State University
