Spring in Glacier National Park. Unfortunately the trail to this creek has been closed to the public. Hopefully I’ll be able to photograph it again with better conditions at some point in the future. . . An hour before this photo was taken there was not a cloud in the sky. The Rocky Mountains do some crazy shit. . . You can learn how I edited this image, and all of my images, at the link in my bio. 👍🏼👍🏼 at Montana

Some stormy light over a frozen lake in the Lofoten Islands of Norway. This one time, almost ten years ago, I broke through the ice on a frozen lake while hiking around in the Sierras by myself scouting compositions. I remember two distinct things from that event. First, it wasn’t just cold... it was painfully frigid. Like being stabbed by a thousand knives while simultaneously suffocating. Good times. Second, I very literally pissed my pants while trying to climb out. I remember thinking “oh, that’s really cool to do on top of everything else I’m going through” but I couldn’t control it, so I just let it happen. 🤷🏻‍♂️ . . We all know this place pretty well, but here is hopefully a different enough vantage point to be a bit less than typical. . . You can learn how I edited this image, and all of my images, at the link in my bio. 👍🏼👍🏼 at Inyo County, California

A shot from earlier in this decade taken at a place I’m sure you’ve seen a million times already. I just hadn’t posted it on IG before, so fuck it... here’s a mediocre rendition of a place I’m sure you’re sick of seeing by now. . . The mix of warm and silvery light on this evening was really fascinating to me as we stood there under a one hell of a thunderstorm. I’m not a huge fan of this location because it’s been shot by every photographer and their mothers at this point... and I’m not nearly clever enough to shoot it in a unique way. But similar to my moral obligation to never turn down free food (I’m looking at you @tacobell ) I’ll also never turn down photographing a good storm. . . I shot this image in 2009. In the last decade I’ve returned to this exact location in @glaciernps and soaked my balls while sitting in this frigid water hoping to top this version no less than 40 times. I’ve yet to witness better conditions and have only managed to make myself sterile, I presume. What any other attempt (from myself or the people who have tried to shoot this after me) has lacked is the combination of the many variables that make this one nearly impossible to time correctly. First, catching this little creek while it’s still flowing requires you shoot it relatively early in the season. Early in the season means you’re normally left with residual dirty snow in the midground areas, which kills the scene IMO. Having the blooms/stalks of Beargrass on the right side hill (hard to see on IG) also adds another factor of timing. On top of that, it’s fairly rare to have a sunset that allows this much light on these peaks while also lighting up a dramatic stormy sky. I think I’ve given up trying. I’ve always considered this a personal favorite image of mine (which says a lot as I tend to hate just about every photo I take) and maybe part of that feeling comes from the fact that me and my ballsack haven’t been able to top it in a decade of attempts. . . Before you think I’ve gone and started doing those crazy night sky/milky way mixed with a sunset/sunrise or mid day shot... I’d like to say this is a single frame and not a blend from different times. This is just how some interesting timing and conditions look in an African desert. Yes, it’s generously processed in Photoshop, but this just an awesome mix of twilight and the sun slowly rising towards the horizon with a little hint of moonlight for good measure. I’ll post the unphotoshopped version in my story. . . If you’d like to see some killer night skies, consider joining me in Namibia next year where we spend some quality time with these quiver trees.
