For the fourth year in a row we will once again be challenging the Georgia Strait on our Stand Up Paddle Boards on July 8th 2017 Paddling across the Salish Sea, our brave paddlers will take as long as 10 to 14 hours to cover as many as 60 to 70 kilometres while crossing the Strait. In so doing, they’ll face open seas, encounter marine life such as the pods of orcas and dolphins Coastal BC’s been blessed to see lately, dodge BC Ferries, and endure (hopefully) the summer sun. This will be our 4th year challenging the Salish Sea. Last year with unpredictable weather and high winds our team had to abandon our quest to reach the other side due to unfavourable sea conditions. We have crossed successfully as a group 2 out of 3 times. What will happen this year? It shows how challenging and arduous crossing the Salish Sea on paddle boards can be. Having crossed from Nanaimo to Vancouver successfully in 2014 and 2015 it was a very tough call to make last year to turn around. It was heartbreaking. Even with all the advanced weather data, back door access to environment Canada's forecast information, it demonstrates the unpredictability of the Georgia Strait and what mother nature may throw at us. It is not uncommon to separate yourself from the pack by 2 or 3 km's in open and windy seas. It was indeed a very tough call to make. We didn't want the situation to go from bad, to very bad, to worse. The endurance, mental and physical strength and high spirits displayed by our athletes (Norman, Adam, Carmen, Evan, Geordie, Steve, Roxanne, Paul, Jason, and Kelvin) was truly amazing. The whole event was still a huge success. Paddling 40kms, and being on the water for 8+hours on the Salish Sea this was definitely no small feat and a huge achievement nonetheless. Here’s to hoping for a successfully crossing for 2017 . . . #salishsea #straitofgeorgia #bcferries #standuppaddle #paddleboarding #opensea #supcrossing #endurance #nanaimo #vancouver #challenge #salishseasupx #sssx 📷 @1piskie at Vancouver, British Columbia
