A conversation with a student after last nights class got me reflecting.... β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β € I first stumbled upon yoga at the age of about 12, I went along with my mum in a room full of mainly pensioners...I went a few times, but I was more interested in dancing, netball and S Club Juniors at the time πŸ˜‚ Years later I took my first class as an adult visiting a friend in Hong Kong, then shortly after went to Indonesia where I stayed in a yoga hostel (by accident) and ended up doing yoga (in the completely impractical gear!) I liked the stretch but I still didn’t get what all the fuss was about.πŸ₯΄ β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β € A year or so later I got depression very severely and was suffering immensely. Getting dressed and eating was a struggle that most days didn’t happen and getting out of bed was a rarity. β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β € I saw an advert on Facebook for a yoga studio opening near where I live . Something inside my felt like maybe I should give this thing another go, I was desperate... β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β € I went along to @hotyoganic for the first time and took a yoga class. I became hooked...not so much because of the physical benefits (I mean that part was good too...especially because I was spending most of my life in bed at that point) but because of the mental clarity yoga gave me, even for a brief few moments where I wasn’t completely absorbed in my constant mind chatter and I was just focusing on my breath or staying balanced! β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β € Of course yoga wasn’t the only thing that helped me get through my depression...big shout out to my family, friends, group therapy, counselling and of course the antidepressant medicine that saved my life!πŸ™πŸ½ But I tell you what....yoga really has helped me in more ways than I ever imagined. Being present in my body, allowing my emotions to flow through me, harnessing the power of the breath, finding compassion for myself, allowing myself to just BEπŸ’« β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β € Now fast forward 4 years later and I am now helping to pass on some of the knowledge and lessons I have learnt and will continue to learn and I couldn’t be more grateful and thankful everyday in my heart πŸ’žπŸ₯° β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β € I am thankful for my struggle because without it I wouldn’t have stumbled across my strength ☺️
