Set amidst the well maintained gardens, Rajarani Temple is locally known as a "love temple" because of the erotic carvings of women and couples in the temple. .
This 11th century old temple will amaze you with its mesmerizing architecture. The entire temple was carved using red and yellow sandstone, which is locally known as Rajarani, hence the name of the temple. The temple no longer has an image of the deity in the sanctuary but its strong Saiva associations are testified from the figures of Shiva and his consort Parvati on the platform. .
Thanks to its beautiful garden, this place is popular for relaxed walk and picnic for local people. at Raja Rani Mandir
Goddess Khudurukuni or Goddess Durga?
Near the Lingaraj Temple I saw these beautiful Goddess Idols beeing sold. As Devi were sitting on the Lions I thought it is Goddess Durga, but my friend corrected me and told this is Goddess Khudurukuni, which is worshipped during Khudurukuni Puja in Odisha. .
This is what I learned:
Khudurukuni Puja is celebrated by unmarried girls as a prayer to Goddess for the well being, safety and prosperity of their brothers. It is mainly observed in the coastal districts of Odisha during the month of Bhadraba (Aug-Sept) on Sundays after the Gahma Purnima (Full moon day).
This shows the sanctity and beauty of the relationship between Brother and Sister. .
The rituals and festivity owe its relevance to folklore of a young girl Taapoi, a sister to seven brothers, of a family of traders. She underwent extreme sufferings in the hands of her sister-in-laws when her brothers were on a voyage. It is believed that Taapoi survived on Khuda (a special preparation made of the broken rice) after her brothers left for some journey. She offered Khuda to the Goddess as she had nothing else to offer and so Khuda considered as one of the favourite of the Goddess. Khudurukuni literally means one who is very eager for khuda. .
Modern day celebrations of Khudurukuni Puja include young girls waking up early in the morning and collecting various flowers. Thereafter they stitch garland for the Goddess. Then idol of the Goddess is installed and the worship and rituals begin in the evening. The puja is followed by narratives - the first episode narrates the story of Goddess Durga defeating Demon Mahishasura which is followed by Taapoi's life story. According to the old book, “Goddess Khudurukuni can fulfill all your wishes”. .
As I understand goddess Khudurukuni is a form of Goddess Durga, worshipped on the day of Khudurukuni Puja. .

The splendid Lingraj Temple built in 11 century AD represents the culmination of temple architecture in Odisha. Its spire is around 180 feet tall. There are more than 64 smaller shrines in the sprawling temple complex as well. They're magnificently decorated with sculptures of gods and goddesses, kings and queens, dancing girls, hunters, and musicians.
Only Hindus are allowed to enter the temple complex (and only those Hindus who look Hindu enough). Non-Hindus can, however, get to see inside the temple complex from a viewing platform to the right of the main entrance. at Lingaraja Temple
Offering of bangles to the Goddess - The act of giving makes you receptive to blessings.
The primary focus of Hindu temples is the worship ritual called puja. Puja is a ceremony in which the ringing of bells, lighting the sacred fire, presenting of offerings, chanting etc. invoke the God blessings. at Berhampur, Orissa
