Three years ago today, this little side “company” went live. I had recently been laid off, had little direction of where to go next, and although I had loved the past decade working in Ex Phys and Nutrition, I didn’t feel like it was the path I wanted to take for my career anymore. ••I had very little idea of what impact such a small action step would have on my life, or the long grueling hours I had in front of me to see those changes come to light, but I couldn’t be more grateful for these things now. •• That being said, more changes are upon us and the current Karuna site will be down until mid-Summer 2018. Upon our return, we’ll be bringing back some of our old favorite programming and merch, adding our podcast episodes, and launching our full non-profit tour. From coast to coast, I am the new kid, the quiet one, and the shy one. I am the silent observer rather than the center of attention. Belonging is a fleeting feeling for me; on an endless journey searching for home. We are shaped by our experiences and its how we come out the other side that matters. Today, I am an engineer, I am a baker, I am the phone call you make when you need help, I am stubborn, I am driven by my commitment to make life, for everyone in mine, a little easier because I know how hard can get. I have persevered...with understanding. We are all lucky, we are all human, we are all trying to figure this out. I will not always agree but I will not fault anyone for the choices that they make, I have to make, or that are made for me. I will learn and grow from them. I have persevered with my compassion. I am not perfect and I expect the same from the people that I encounter. I am grateful.. for MY life, not by the life that was presented to me but the life that I have made. Meet Kat. Sometimes when traveling, I know there’s so much more than luck that goes into the people I come across. Kat is a beaming light and one of those people that feels like a childhood friend with just one conversation. #PortlandFeature •••• We ask each of our #HumansofGratitude to complete the same three phrases. Here's what Kat had to say: I am... the product of a teen mom and young father in love. I am a native Mainer that thought I needed to get out of this place I call home only to realize it’s one of the best places on earth. I am passionate about finding honest and creative ways to help others along this journey with me. I am the girl who is relentless in doing and finding what makes me happy. I am outgoing and thrive on energy but am learning that I am perfectly content sitting in silence to refuel my soul. I am a spirit junkie. I am going to marry my best friend, Karl in August of this year! (YAY!) I am almost 30 years old and am so ready to take on the rest of what life has in store for me.. I have overcome... some pretty real life dark situations starting from a young age. My teen mom was abandoned by her family once I was born and my father struggled with anger management, was physically abusive to my mom and spent most of my childhood in prison. My mom moved my sister and I around for many years until she realized the best place for us would be with our grandparents. Regardless of this past, I have cultivated beautiful relationships with both of my parents today. Through the abuse, abandonment, fear and anger I have learned to see the good in all of the bad. To live, learn, forgive and move on.. to LOVE HARD even when its the last thing you want to do. I have persevered. I am grateful... for LIFE. For being able to wake up everyday and BREATHE. For ALL of my struggles even the most painful ones that I used to be embarrassed of.. because without them, who am I really? I am grateful for the path in which I walk daily to work towards being the most truthful and authentic me possible. Meet Ciaran. It doesn’t take long to know that there is more depth than meets the eye with this one and we couldn’t be more honored to have him as our first feature of 2018. #BostonFeature •••• We ask each of our #HumansofGratitude to complete the same three phrases. Here's what Ciaran had to say: I am… the product of two people who left their families, friends, and entire lives to come to this country with only a handful of cash to find their place in the world. Two people from the same county in Ireland that met each other three thousand miles from home. Two people who showed me day by day what an unstoppable work ethic looks like and what it means to make the most of what you have. That is who I am. I have persevered… some of the darker sides of depression. From self-inflicted wounds to a hospitalization, I have fought violent, psychological battles to the point of attempting suicide. Immature and misguided, I have found my way through some nasty experiences with guidance of family and friends, I have persevered. I am grateful... for the opportunities my family has given me. I am grateful to be the first of us to attend college. I am grateful to have the honor of playing multiple seasons as a professional athlete. We are so excited to reintroduce the #HumansofGratitude series just in time to express our gratitude for sharing another year with our incredible community. We’re kicking it off with something we haven’t done in the past and keeping this guest anonymous, but don’t let that deter you from hearing his story. There are very few people that make you feel peace just by being their presence, but this guest is certainly one of them. #ConnecticutFeature •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• We asked each of our #HumansofGratitude to complete the same three phrases. Here's what our first guest had to say: I am ... an animal, but maybe not what I would have chosen, had I been given an option. I might have been a dog, but dog’s are a little too human. Their emotions are plain to see. They feel cold, and sad; they worry, and fret. What of a tiger? They seem more stoic. Would I see a tiger fret if I knew one as well as I know my dog? What of a duck? I could be a duck. I have never seen a duck fret, or flinch at the cold, or wish the rain would go away. I have persevered or overcome. Sure. I have persevered. I’ve made it through. I’ve shown up, when I could have stayed away. I’ve kept going when I could have stopped. But is that enough? Have I run, when walking would have sufficed? Have I striven, when simple completion was all that was required? At what point is the bare minimum failure? If you persevere, but in such a way as to never face your fear, is that to overcome? Can we please stop counting calories already? It blows me away that people still use counting and often cutting (gasp!) calories as a method to meeting their health goals. Calories are energy your body needs to fuel your metabolism, your activities, your brain, your breath, your health. Slow down. Chew your food. Eat intuitively. Understand that the quality of the foods with which you are fueling your body far outweighs quantity (added bonus: nutrient dense foods are often fiber packed which means you eat less naturally). In short, don't eat less, eat better. Also, #buddhabowlgoals like whoa. 📷: talinegabriel
