Occoneechee Mountain State Natural Area in Hillsborough is the highest point between Hillsborough and the Atlantic. TNC acquired much of the 867-foot mountain in the late 1990s. There's a lovely 2.2-mile loop trail that winds along the Eno River and climbs up the piedmont mountain. 📷: @davidshortphotography #naturenc

Once a year, thousands of daffodils create a beautiful yellow sea of blooms in Linville Gorge. It's a strenuous 7.5 miles out and back to see Daffodil Flats, though the reward is powerful. 📷: @hdcarolina #naturenc

Hamby's Bay is full of water thanks to the recent rains. Carolina Bays are elliptical depressions found along the Atlantic seaboard whose origins continue to be debated. They're known for their rich herptile diversity, and this particular bay is thick with cypress trees of mixed age. 📷: @mfields105, @tnc_nc's GIS/Invasives Manager and newly minted drone pilot. We can't wait to share more footage of our project areas with you! #naturenc

A curious fox squirrel checking out @neiljernigan’s camera trap. The fox squirrel is the largest tree squirrel in NC, nearly 2x the size of the gray squirrel. It lives primarily in mature longleaf pine and open pine-oak forests in the Sandhills and southern Coastal Plain. There’s also a more recently established population in northwestern NC. 📷: @neiljernigan #naturenc

"There is healing in the trees for tired minds and for our overburdened spirits, there is strength in the hills, if only we lift up our eyes. Remember that nature is your great restorer." - Calvin Coolidge 📷: @xwesx #naturenc

Thanks for your part in conserving North Carolina and beyond. Happy Valentine's Day! #naturenc

Last night, the Senate voted to renew the Land and Water Conservation Fund! Permanently. Forever…just like the places it will help protect. // LWCF has provided funding to help protect some of North Carolina’s most special places and ensure recreational access for hunting, fishing, and other outdoor activities. North Carolina has received approximately $253.6 million in LWCF funding over the past 5 decades, protecting places such as the Cape Lookout National Seashore, Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, and Pisgah and Nantahala National Forests. 📷: @leslie_restivo #naturenc

The Deep Gap Trail is a tough out-and-back trail that summits the two tallest peaks in the eastern United States Mt. Mitchell and Mt. Craig. The views are worth your effort! 📷: @losethetrail #naturenc
