β€’β€’ I ran onto the red carpet with the biggest grin I could muster. The spectators were going mad! I crossed the finish line absolutely exhausted and elated at the same time. I was a bit wobbly so one of the volunteers took me into the med tent. I was okay though πŸ‘ŒπŸΌ . . My overall time at #IMFL was 11:28:01 which is an IM PR by 1 hour 13 mins πŸ™ŒπŸΌ 13/79 ladies in my age group. Next time top 10 😁 I was hoping for a better run split but there’s not much I can do about things out of my control. I know now that I’ve got more to give on the run so it’s on 😈 sub 4 run I’m coming for you! Overall I’m over the moon with how my race went. It went better than what I ever could’ve imagined. If I never have to drink Gatorade orange again it will be too soon 🀒 . . IM Florida is a terrific race for a first timer but also HARD. It is flat and can be fast, the swim with the current and breakers (on a bad day) is tough. You will spend 95% of your time in the aero position because there is no climbing and that can trash your legs a little on the bike too. You’re always guaranteed a headwind at some point, which technically is uphill Cycling πŸ˜‚ Constant power and nowhere to free wheel a little. There is zero shade on the run which makes it tough in the heat. . If you’re thinking of signing up- wait no longer!! You won’t be disappointed. Anything in fact is possible 🀘🏼 #badass #hardaf

β€’β€’ A hat, sunglasses, race nutrition, race belt, toilet stop and off I was onto the run course. My A goal for the run was to go Sub 4 hours and my B goal was to go as close to 4 hours as possible. I always knew Sub 4 was going to be hard (but I’m capable of it) just because my run training for the last couple of weeks was less than perfect because of a knee injury. I started off a bit fast so I kept on telling myself to slow down. Slowed to a just sub 4 pace and it felt comfortable. One of my club members came past me at km 5, we exchanged some words and high 5s and off we went into opposite directions. He told me my husband was roughly a 2km ahead of me. Now this meant game on... I kept it steady and easy although I was dying on the inside πŸ˜‚ Grabbed some ice, cola and pretzels at every aid station. I could see my husband in the distance and I knew it wouldn’t be long before I caught up to him. I caught up to him at the next aid station, had a nice sweaty hug πŸ€— quick chat to hear how it’s going and then off we went. The turn around point came quick and I was happy to know I’d only have to come back this way 1 more time. It was stinking hot by this time and I was living from aid station to aid station for the all important ice down the tri suit Just to cool down a bit. I hit 14 km and my knee said no more 😒 I was in a lot of pain at it just became about finishing at this point... I worked out that I could shuffle for 4 mins before the pain got too bad so I adjusted my race plan to run 4 min walk 1 min. I reached the halfway mark in 2:02:xx From here on out it became a mental battle... my pace was dropping and I was just tired. I saw my husband again at 27 km - quick pep talk from him (although he was suffering too) and I was off again. That lifted my spirit again. I kept on reminding myself that I had less than 21 km to go and each step forward was a meter less I had to travel. I was in pain but I blocked it out. I reached km 38 and started running with a very kind man...we picked up the pace and every foot stride hit the tarmac with purpose. The red carpet came into view and I told the gentleman to go!

β€’β€’ in and out of transition in roughly 7 mins. It was time to pedal for 112 miles. Coming into this race my goal for the bike was 6 hours. I had to go 6 hours to achieve my Sub 12 hour Finish goal. I very quickly settled into a nice rhythm. I was being passed a lot but equally so I was passing cyclist too - that was a first for me. I had to have 58grams of carbs per hour so I had 2 gels every hour and a bottle of Gatorade. I settled on 2 salt tabs per hour. I was going a lot faster on the bike than what I was aiming for. I was constantly worrying that I’m pushing to hard and that I was going to hit the wall....I always felt comfortable but the numbers was out of my league. It was too good to be true. I was swallowed up by a couple of drafting packs through out the race. It meant that I had to sit back at times as I could not pass them again and did not want to get done for drafting. It was so frustrating at times. Around mile 100 I turned a corner and geeeez - I literally came to a standstill because of the headwind πŸ˜°πŸ’¨ it was so close to the end that I decided to suck it up and carry on moving. I’ve come this far, I wasn’t going to let the wind get the better of me. As I rounded the corner of the final stretch I slipped my feet out of my shoes and dismounted. Handed my bike to the volunteer and into the changing tent I went. ..overall the bike course was really good. A lot of wind, false flats and a bit boring at times. I finished the bike in a time of 5:38:06 - I exceeded my expectations beyond imagination. Me averaging 32.1 km/ph, what???? Still can’t believe I did that! Happy is an understatement and it goes to show all the work I’ve put into the bike this year has paid off. @momentumjewelry thanks for the inspiration throughout πŸ‘ŒπŸΌπŸ€˜πŸΌ

β€’β€’ Here’s a little race recap of IMFL.. πŸŠπŸ»β€β™€οΈπŸš΄πŸΌβ€β™€οΈπŸƒβ€β™€οΈ . . πŸ’• Who knew when I signed up for this race a year ago I would come out a different person at the end of this journey.. It’s been a trying year with many things been thrown at me..it’s not always been easy but these things are there to test us and makes you a better person for it. Race Day- when the alarm went off at 4am I woke up full of excitement and nerves. Race day had finally arrived. It had been a long training journey physically and mentally, I was ready. I struggled to get my breakfast down because it was way too early for my body to eat. Shuffled it down, had a cup of tea and got my bits together so we could make our way to transition. Transition was only a 10 min walk from our apartment so I decided to half put my wetsuit on in the warmth of our apartment. We made our way to transition. Checked the bike was ok, tires pumped up, bike computer checked and nutrition attached to my bike there was not much more to do in transition. I made my way to the swim start where I just made it in time for the national anthem...it sent chills down my spine. SWIM- IMFL is a rolling start. The weather gods had listened to my prayers as the sea was fairly calm which I knew was gonna make for a great days racing. I made my way into my corral. It was still dark as the sun still had 15min to rise...”surely we won’t start the swim in the dark whilst the sea predators are still active πŸ¦ˆπŸ˜±β€ and there the start horn went. It’s go time πŸ’₯ all the nerves went and I focused on what had to be done. Florida is a x2 loop course with an Australian exit half way. It took me a while to get swimming as it’s quite shallow for a while then you swim for a bit before you hit a sand bank again. My first loop went without any real problems apart from the people that I kept on passing that clearly shouldn’t have placed themselves where they did...I exited the water in 35ish minutes after the first loop and was a bit surprised but excited that I’d swim the first loop in that time. It kept the spirits high for the second loop. Second loop was a lot more congested and made for a slightly slower swim on the second loop. *cont πŸ‘‡πŸ»
